Law / Poland - Temporary Residence card - Karta pobytu - required documents [142]

OK so I have a UK bank account which I can't currently get statements from, and to get the Meldunek I need to ...? Take my landlord WITH me for the interview? Can only assume he will be willing as he wants the rent paid by bank standing order.

Life / Popular and Practical Cars in Poland [49]

I've seen loads of old little Fiats out there on the streets, personally I would like one of those when I have enough money :)

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

See you in a couple of weeks when you are asking the forum for advice on what flowers to buy for Magda the Polish girl you have just met and fallen in love with...

I think I saw her on Chelmnia yesterday! What a delight she was, she tried to give ME flowers in fact. I didn't really want one and she blessed me with a loving "kurwa" as I regretfully walked away.

NewBrit - this is called Culture Shock. You'll get over it, and start noticing the bins on fire, and the JCBs racing at 60 mph along the main arterial roads instead.

Oh yes ... WHY are you spending time on that conversation instead of saying "Dziękuje" and walking past, these people are beggars not the average Polish citizen and might not even BE Polish. Open your eyes.

As to people complaining about the "scum" going to Britain - well, there is fully the chance for English wasters to come here and be vile. Funny that the people who choose to come here generally speaking aren't hung up on what Polish people are doing back home. Such blinkered and selective views clearly don't see the polite people who are funding themselves through some mind expanding travel to perfect their English. How IS your Polish coming along?

Seamus, come on. Be serious here.

Your favourite kind of vodka is a very pertinent question. One of the most important, in fact.

i have been to warsawa airport and i was treated like a bul **** by immigration at airport

I felt much the same as this when I was going to/leaving O'Hare, like I was offending by my very existance ... at Warsaw airport I mainly felt like a passenger, of no interest at all but equally not anything negative. Shrugs.

And at Heathrow, Birmingham etc I felt like a customer. Guess it's down to what you are used to.

@Seamus - lol. I didn't take it as bad - I just think your favourite kind of vodka is culturally important here :D

Life / Are foreigners welcome in Poland? [267]

I just came back from the UK, complete with a very snazzy haircut. Too tired to notice any reactions on the 175 bus from Warsaw airport as were everyone else on the bus.

Next day, having received many admiring glances at my tresses in the Midlands I went to the shop to buy bread and milk ... and got positively SCOWLED at by several women as I walked up the street. Is my hairstyle too young for their tastes? I thought. Then I thought "Is that really all you have to worry about, that someone has a different hairstyle than you'd choose?".

Meh. I get stared at when people think I *am* Polish but just not like them.

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

I'm still sad that I can't have abstract conversations about a variety of subjects rather than just the very day to day Polish I've learned so far but every day brings a new word (or a new varient of a word I know for the various reasons), I will crack the nut with this, I bloody well will if it takes me the rest of my life I will!!!

Patience, practice and much banging your head on the wall!

Travel / Places open in Poland on national holidays [23]

I have someone coming to see me on May 1st, birthday is on the 3rd, would like to take him somewhere nice but I have no idea where might be open. I know the labour laws mean that no one can be forced to work on these holidays so does anyone have any restaurant suggestions please?

If not looks like I'll be doing a bad impression of Levi Roots :)

Language / Polish people: did you struggle learning English - differences between both languages [75]

I'm here to Promote English as Polish is a dying language, plus you make a lot of grammar mistakes. I know my native language better than you so don't tell me otherwise

Is it, perchance, "April Fool's Day 2 - Rewind"?

I'm amazed to see such a thought expressed so eloquently and with such perfect execution. Kudos! However, unless you live on the Falklands could you explain how English is your native language if you are Argentinian?

@Sean naw the real challenge when teaching is getting the kind of people who never think about anything to have something to TALK about. Thankfully there's not that many of them who actually want to learn another language.

Work / Poland Work Permit / Study Visa Processing Times [191]

If you go to the UK for this purpose, have supporting evidence for your trip's purpose (i.e. letter inviting you somewhere or a hotel reservation) cos if you tell them the truth they won't let you in. A colleague was turned back from the UK (being told he was the politest person they had had to deport, and apparently contacting the authorities here to tell them to be gentle with him - he had no problem as he had time to try Lvov instead!).
