Michal,

My mother was born in Czestochowa and I have some close friends there. I love the town centre and it's unique atmosphere. I visit at least once a year.

There are many other more interesting places than Poland to visit. Even Prague in the Czech Republic 'knocks the socks off' anything in Poland.

Hmmmm maybe I cut you a bit too much slack Michal ;)

Firstly don't be so stunned that someone expresses a desire to visit Poland. This is a Polish forum so it's inevitable that people who have an interest in the country will gravitate to forums such as these.

Secondly, your statement that Prague "knocks the socks off" anything in Poland is a very simplistic thing to say.

Teng,

To see Poland at it's best then go in the summer. Yes it can be unbelievably hot but you won't be going there to work but to have a vacation. In other words you can take it easy and enjoy the weather (and all the beautiful girls in their summer outfits ;) )

Poland has something for everyone. Mountains, lakes, forests, history, culture breaks, unspoilt seaside resorts.

Whereas Prague has wonderful architecture, cheap beer and lager louts......no contest !

Danmar's "show house" in Szymek, Kaszuby

Wieza in Kaszuby area. Not for people with vertigo !!

Ex-Communist hotel resort in Kaszuby

Not the most spectacular photograph in the world but this is one of my favourites. It typifies one of the things I really love about Poland......it's unspoilt forests.

Life / nasza-klasa.pl - If you looking for your classmates or friends in Poland [95]

You can add me to the list as well. I abandoned the idea pretty early as several Polish friends of mine said it wouldn't work in Poland as most Poles tend to keep in touch with school friends. The ones they don't want to keep in touch with they don't bother with.

Needless to say I don't ask for their advice anymore :)

Nasza Klasa and Friends Reunited has a limited shelflife as once the majority of class mates sign up then there is no further incentive to renew subscriptions year after year. The creators will still make stacks of money though !!

I'm not so sure Nasza Klasa will be wiped out. Any company first onto the market always has an enormous advantage over it's rivals and in this particular case, once the rivals have rolled out their own version then Nasza Klasa will have swept up most of the market.

There are loads of business models in the UK & the US that could be transplanted in Poland. I 've dozens of ideas............just not enough money :(

Life / GPS Satellite Navigation systems for driving in Poland [22]

Agree with Harry on this one.

TomTom is a SatNav device with built in mapping software.

Automapa is mapping software that can be installed on PDA's but as Harry said 2nd hand PDA's can be bought very cheaply (likewise GPS receivers).

Travel / Rollerblading / Inline skating in Wroclaw [4]

I've been told that I'm going to be given a "crash course" in roller blading on my next trip to Gdansk.

Apparently, as an activity it's a lot more common than here in the UK.

UK, Ireland / Cheap calls to Poland from the UK [134]

Be careful BT haven't excluded that particular tel no as a "banned tel no". Use it once and then check your phone bill to see if you have been charged.

There are several telephone companies offering calls at 1 per minute to Poland. There was one offering calls at 0.05p a minute but I think that has been blocked now.

Another option is Skype. For around £ 4.00 a month you can call any landline in Poland free of charge using your broadband connection.

Genealogy / Displaced Persons Camp / Work camp and concentration camp difference [86]

My mother was at several DP camps after the war including Fallingbostel. She was also at Braunschweig, Barum (where my brother was born), Marienborn and about ten others.

Her memories are fond ones. She recalls how they use to hang a curtain across the room to separate their living quarters from the rest of the barracks and how there would be dances every week with accordionists etc.

She also said the reason they were moved so many times is that the authorities didn't want the refugees to get too comfortable in one place and in a way wanted people to repatriate themselves.

I'd be delighted to hear from anyone with similar experiences.

Travel / What can Poland do to attract more tourists? Llamas farm? [71]

Ah see ! I stumble across this thread and my teeth are already grinding !!

This is one of my pet hates as I am continually frustrated by the non efforts of the Polish Tourism board to promote the country to the rest of the world.

Hmmm don't YOU think it odd that you post in the "Relationship/Marriage" board but are looking to set up a charity ?

Anyway, I don't know any Polish muslims anywhere ! But if you happen to come across any Saudi Arabian Catholics then please let me know as I would like to meet them.

Genealogy / Displaced Persons Camp / Work camp and concentration camp difference [86]

I find this chapter of history fascinating.

My mother spent over ten years in DP camps around Germany.

Many of the place names that people mention on this thread I recognise from my conversations with her.

She said the conditions were not always that comfortable i.e. having to share a barracks with dozens of other strangers. To create an air of privacy some families would drape blankets on a string across their area.

Food was strictly rationed and some people felt they were given less food then during the wartime.

But she also said the social aspect was great. People from all walks of life living in the same camp many people with fascinating stories to tell.

She told me that the Poles were one of the last nationalities to be offered the chance to return back to their homeland-Russians were one of the first.

Due to this delay, a lot of Poles in DP camps started to receive letters from relatives back home in Poland telling them that life under the Communists was no better than Nazi rule and as a result many Poles (my family included) decided not to go back to Poland.

Difference in work camp and concentration camp.

My mother told my daughter that when was taken to a work camp to sew. She survived the war, but she also said she was operated on to remove a burst apendex. I am trying to locate a camp that was near Nurnberg. And also a listing of names of folks at such a camp and leads.

I imputed in a search on the net and am having problems finding what I am looking for.

The Red Cross maintained files of DPs (displaced persons of all nationalities) from the war years.

Merged: Bronze statues all over Poland

I am trying to add content to a website of mine showcasing attractions around Poland and along my travels I have come across a number of bronze (or are they bronze ?) statues which seem to be very popular in the country.

Does anyone have any other examples of them and ideally what they may be called in Polish ?

The image below was taken in Czestochowa.

Life / Bribery and corruption 'fact of life' in Poland? [152]

Merged: Corruption in every day life in Poland

We have many good friends in Poland. Today, one lady was telling us that it is customary that when the postman delivers her pension then he gets a tip, in fact, it's expected. She said something along the lines of if she gets 105PLN then he gets the scraps i.e. 5 PLN (as an example). So I'm not sure if that means she tips him or he just takes it himself (which I'd find hard to believe).

She also said that she recently bought a brand new cooker but within a few days some of the burners stopped working. She reported the fault and an engineer was called out but he insisted on charging her 100PLN when he arrived claiming that he doesn't work for the store so therefore she had to pay him for his time. Are consumer laws weak in Poland or is there still a strong tendency to give back handers out ?

Life / Bribery and corruption 'fact of life' in Poland? [152]

The postman thing is a custom, a kind of tip that many people do..

I can never understand why some people think it is "customary" to tip. If someone delivers a service over and above what is expected then yes but a postman ? Would you tip a bus driver ?

I am so f...ing bored!!!!

I'm not entirely clear if you are in Poland on vacation or you're living there but nevertheless.......

Boredom is a state of mind. I know people who also complain about boredom but it's because they don't do anything !

Cut down on the beers...........seriously.

UK, Ireland / The "Paracetamol Myth" - Polish people hesitate to visit UK doctors. [51]

I've heard from quite a few of my Polish buddies here in the UK that a visit to a UK doctor is a waste of time as British doctors only give you paracetamol. It's something I have heard from friends all round the UK.

Has anyone else had experience of this ?

Language / How to correctly pronounce "złoty" in Polish? "ł" letter [17]

I have always pronounced it "zwoty" but seen some people pronounce it "zLoty" ??

Even more confusing is that some of my Polish friends even pronounce it as "zLoty" although perhaps they are doing it for my benefit ??

Language / The shame! I can't pronounce my Polish wife's name (Ola) [69]

Some of you might be surprised how hard it is for foreigners to get their mouths around certain vowels.

Americans i.e. the OP rarely use the "o" sound you find when saying "Ola". The example of "hot" was misleading by a previous poster as Americans pronounce that word almost sounding like "hat".

I have a Polish friend who speaks fluent English but still cannot master elongating vowels e.g Sheep sounds like ship or Two sounds like tu

right so I'm wrong to dismiss banks as a possible option ?

I always thought a kantor was the best place to go....generally.

If someone can't speak Polish is transferring money in a Polish bank a difficult process ?

UK, Ireland / What can I say/do about my Polish neighbours in the UK? [65]

First of all, I am assuming you are 100% certain that they are Polish (otherwise you wouldn't be posting on a Polish forum) ?

Secondly, do not treat them any differently to any other nuisance neighbour. Speak to them politely in the first instance. If it carries on then contact the Council. They will probably tell you to keep a record of the instances.

Our dear Polish neighbor kid was drunk driving 135 mph on a residential street, he hit a van full of children and killed 4 people and himself

Thank you. It really should be a rule of the forum that claims are always backed up by a relevant source.

In my opinion, anyone driving over the speed limit, especially at such a speed is a d*ck. 135 mph is insane !

However, unless someone can show that a disproportionate number of Poles in the US are speed demons then I'm not sure what point Joker was making.
