News / Lech Walesa urged to "reduce Russia" to 50 million people [366]

russia can't even take over Ukraine, let alone the world

but... russia in its cackfisted attempts to feel important by invading other countries will kill a lot of innocent civilians... are you proud of that?

russian 'culture' is lies, theft and violence - all the russian state is capable of at present and the weak and passive russian citizens just let the mafia bleed them dry and whine about not being able to change anything

before february I didn't think much about russia, but every single thing I've found out about what makes russia tick is loathesome...

nasty thug culture and the worst government in the world.... I can't wait to be able to simply ignore it again

survive upcoming crisis and become stronger

no... the russian serfs are weak and passive, they hunger for the feel of the lash on their back

why are russians like that? don't they have any self-respect? they just let the tsar kill them by the truckload and steal from the rest and keep them in poverty and ignorance... and somehow they don't mind?

worthless culture...

British Empire ...was dismantled, etc

British and French were overseas empires (the colonies are 'over there') the US has never been a true empire (the only classic style colony was the Philippines temporarily).

At the beginning of the 20th century there were three dynastic contiguous empires (with no firm geographic boundary between the core territory and the colonies).

They were the Hapsburgs, the Ottomans and the Romanovs WWI was precisely about dismantling them since none of them served any good purpose. The Hapsburgs and Ottomans were dismantled but the Romanovs mutated into an incredibly ugly (and arguabluy worse) new empire aka the Soviet Union, which mutated into the kleptocratic and thugocratic neo-Tsardom of today....

The only positive contribution russia was making to the modern world was commodity exports and putin has ruined that.... the world will have to learn to live without russia as it is now and the people(s) of russia will have to discover new forms of government before they can rejoin the brotherhood of nations....

Ripping apart a country is not the right solution

Russia is not a "country" it's an aggressive military empire.

The Austrian Empire was dismantled and the world was overall better for it.

The Ottoman Empire was dismantled and the world was overall better for it.

Russia's turn.

You might not perceive it since all you know is life within the empire but those of us in countries wish you a better existence than you can have with Russia in its present form..

I am betting Lucky Luka will be assassinated or overthrown

latest wind of change fsb letter is about that (also touched upon by generalsvr and in line with what was written there a couple of weeks ago)

short story: When russia sent troups to belarus the idea was for them to not leave..... ever, putin has lost patience with lukashenka and seeks to eliminate belarus as an independent entity.... (perhaps keeping luka as a show window hostage/president).

putin is hot under the collar to form a 'triune' state with some part of Ukraine, russia and Belarus... one problem he has is lack of follow through so a lot of his projects get stalled

Russian language wasn't banned in Ukraine.

russians suffer from collective narcisisstic wound exacerbated by putin for 20 years, their whole world view is built upon how superior they are to everyone else who's jealous of them and when the world refuses to play along they lose their sh\t....

Ukrain has done anything but enact normal national language promotion measures (as has happened in very many european countries at some time or other) since this means less status for russian in ukraine the collective narcissistic wound perceives it as a russian language "ban"...

anything but non-stop idolization drives them collectively into deranged hatred....

and gregy has obviously fallen victim to the gru psyop/hybrid warfare

this site has a lot of info behind russia's invasion (which was planned for.... many years)

News / How is the Ukraine War effecting Poland and the rest of the E.U. [35]

According to Ukrainian intelligence some russian units are sabotaging their own equipment to stay away from the fighting....

twitter.com/uawarinfo/status/1546115881939378177

Ukrainians are fighting for their country?

russians really want to fight and die for the glory of the Tsar?

Please stick to the topic of the thread

News / "POLISH death camps" term used by "Parade Magazine" Anti-Polish Bigots [249]

The problem is that English (and Polish) have never developed the proper terminology to distinguish

a- followers of the Judaic faith (let's call them judaists)

b- the genetically distinct ethnic group (let's use Ashkenazi here in this thread for convenience since it's about Central and Eastern Europe)

Not all Judaists are Ashkenazi (even in Europe) and not all Ashkenazi are Judaists...

In Russo-Soviet terms with their very weird nationality laws... the two groups are distinguished and even monolingual Russian speakers who follow no religion were legally not Russian but Ashkenazi (IIRC the Russian word is something like evraj)

Poland is more mixed and some people think in ethnic terms like Russians (so that an Ashkenazi could never be Polish) while others think primarily in religious terms in which a convert to catholicism was no longer considered judaist.

One result is that the lines between Poles and especially non-Judaic Jews can be very blurry and the categories Jew and Pole overlap some (and a _lot_ of Polish people have some degree of Ashkenazi heritage).

News / How is the Ukraine War effecting Poland and the rest of the E.U. [35]

Russia refuses to increase the flow.

Once it gets the turbine it will invent other reasons for slowing the flow....

Germany keeps trying to prevent sanctions from working between the turbine and its efforst to end the blockade of the fake and ghey soviet monstrosity known as Kaliningrad it's very confusing about which side it is on....

to fight in Ukraine's military

Presumably not in front line combat... but the US has a very weird and dangerous misconception about war being something that happens elsewhere so the idea of mixing women and combat seems like an optional unnecessary idea, while Central and Eastern Europe regard it as something that could easily happen right here in which case women are caught up in the war effort as well, mostly behind the lines work though some closer to the fighting as well...

First of all, what has London got to do with it?

UK, Ireland / Boris Johnson - is the new British PM a popular figure in Poland? [150]

Don't talk about Irish politics unless you understand them Maf.

What's to understand?

The irish government was a massive pain in the neck and being as obstructionist as possible. Possible domestic reasons (which I don't really care about) don't change that.

No solution is possible for those who don't want a solution....

I've always been far more into vocal music (because the human voice is the most interesting instrument of all) and he's amazingly ahead of his time....

Berlioz? Not overwhelmed.

Surely you jest! Possibly the finest (and certainly most misunderstood) French composer of the 19th century!

UK, Ireland / Boris Johnson - is the new British PM a popular figure in Poland? [150]

I think it must be Russian money and interference

I would not be surprised... the UK threw open its legs for rich russian gangsters years ago and they can't expect them to leave before they get what they paid for.....

It seems a bit short sighted to dump a politician with one of the leading world brands at present...

-he got brexit done (not perfectly but that was impossible since the eurocrats and the irish were being such t|ts about it)

-he snapped out of covid lockdown lethargy long before most other western leaders

-he has made Macron and Scholz all look like insignificant weenies (which they are) on Ukraine

But it's not my country so the birts are welcome to throw out a (very flawed but real) statesman probably to be replaced by a non-entity and/or euro-svck-up... they love to complain about him but I bet they'll miss him when he's gone....

History / What makes you feel Polish? [167]

I consider nationalists close to fascists

'nationalist' is a very broad term, if you think Poland should exist as a separate country then you're a nationalist, a mild one but... a nationalism

'nationalism' made the nation state model possible (which achieved the highest standards of living in human history which are starting to fall now that the nation state is being rolled back

I don't like Massenet either

Massenet can be pretty good (though he is very uneven). Of his better known works Werther is probably the best... he was better when tied to a recognizable European world than exotic or fantasy settings....

I'm also partial to Therese (a short work, not long enough for a full evening's program).

An interesting example of a famous Polish work that is very unknown in modern Poland might be 'modlitwa dziewicy' (Maiden's Prayer) by Tekla BÄ…darzewska-Baranowska

It remains very popular with Asian pianists and also has an important place in the history of western swing (and north Mexican music).

western swing:

there used to be a mexican version on youtube but I can't find it now...

History / POLISH AND RUSSIAN FRIENDSHIP WILL LAST FOREVER [513]

Russian videos are just too miserable to watch!

I went through a stage of watching some russian pop videos about 10 years ago and the music was often pretty good but I lost the taste...

That's a side effect of the war - all russian culture is poisoned for me now.... even something pretty innocuous like Small Town Mysteries (a cosy murder mystery series set in the 19th century) I enjoyed don't plan on watching any further episodes.

Apparently you don't recognize the importance of eros in culture

Sweet summer child.... it's about ridiculing those who stood up to state oppression (and suffered for it) from one who would never dream of standing up to state oppression.
