News / Polish President vetoes PO's dingbat gender law [173]

Great job president. The claims by certain individuals here that this will cause PiS not winning the elections are chucklesome.

The problem is that the polls are all showing the same thing - PiS will not win a majority, and instead will face a united opposition that have every interest in keeping PiS well away from power.

Acts like this will not gain PiS any support, but will show Duda as someone who is willing to go against the will of the Sejm and Senat for his own political gain. Voters do not like that.

News / Polish President vetoes PO's dingbat gender law [173]

Enjoyed support only in the PO-dominated Sejm.

And Senate.

The thing is that the voters absolutely do not like the President imposing his own values on the decisions of the Parliament. For instance - Wałęsa lost the 1995 election for that reason, and Kwaśniewski won the 2000 election in a landslide for the fact that he showed he could work with AWS.

I'm honestly surprised that Duda chose to do this - it seems that the old PiS problem of not having competent political advisors came through again. He should have simply signed it and said that he respects the will of the Sejm and Senat - which would gain PiS a few votes from the centrists that they badly need.

News / Polish President vetoes PO's dingbat gender law [173]

I KNOW ,ITS HARD FOR SOME TO COMPREHEND,for PO supporter,THAT Politician WOULD MAKE his DECISION AGAINST RATING BUT WITH AN ACCORD to his morals

I don't think you understand how the Polish people perceive the Presidency. They don't want to see vetoes made because of morals or political reasons - they want to see the veto used sparingly and only for issues that are clearly against the Constitution. Duda made the fatal mistake of using it for his own private reasons as opposed to constitutional reasons - which will hurt PiS as PO and others will now portray him as being petty like Kaczyński.

its PIS people time.time for people with vision, morality, who base their decision on truth, reality and facts.no more political prostitution, end with people who would eat c.rap on live TV for jump in popularity rating or EU career .bye bye PO.

Except the opinion polls are showing that PiS are not anywhere near the numbers needed to win the election.

I think that PIS will simply never understand that they can't keep preaching to the choir, they have to attract the middle-ground, the floating voters.

Exactly. Vetoing a law that enjoyed broad support will simply annoy the centrists.

Amusing you say that at a time when the most senior PIS official in the country is hiding behind immunity in order to avoid answering for the way he corruptly enriched himself at the expense of the Polish tax-payer.

Yes, as I outlined in the other thread, it seems that PiS stand very much for corruption and dishonesty.

Funny that Duda is so moral about this law but completely immoral when it comes to lining his own pockets.

This decision is about coming back to normality, not about ratings.hes from PIS not PO

It's everything about ratings. To veto a law that was passed by a large majority in the Sejm will be portrayed in the worst possible light by the government and the smaller parties - and PiS will suffer from it.

PO effectively have baited Duda with this law - and he fell for it.

News / Polish President vetoes PO's dingbat gender law [173]

President Andrzej Duda has vetoed his first law

Amazing. I thought he would've waited until after the election, but to use his veto already because he doesn't agree with PO legislation can only hurt PiS. I'm surprised he took the bait - the vote was won by over 100 votes, so to contradict the Sejm on such an issue is a terrible move.

Duda's opinion ratings were already only around 35% before this.

yep..rarely seen any woman able to punch technically so sound.she throw punches like pro boxer.

What got me in the Penne fight was that you could see that she was throwing punches at all angles - like you say, like a pro boxer. She seems to have a huge amount of distance with her kicks as well, so if she could just sort out some decent wrestling training...

I don't think she really has to do it properly to be honest - the sheer power is enough. I almost get the impression that she was only using strikes to keep people interested. What she did in the Correia fight was just for show really - she could've just armbarred her and ended it easily.

good luck to english trying spell her name.

What's so difficult about Jędrzejczyk? :D

Anyway, she's a hell of a striker, but she doesn't have much in the way of grappling skills. Might be her downfall if there's anyone at 115 that can wrestle, but her striking is so good that no-one might want to get close enough. That cut that she gave Jessica Penne was just brutal. I'm actually hoping that she encourages other women into MMA in Poland.

Rousey on the other hand is just ridiculous. She's able to outwrestle anyone in her division, she's got a pretty heavy punch and she just doesn't back down. She's genuinely scary!

History / Time for Slavic Commonwealth around Poland as center [223]

The problem is that all these countries are guided mainly if not exclusively by their own national self-interest and do not think in terms of Slavic solidarity,

You might find some common ground between Poles, Slovaks, Croatians and Macedonians, but I can't see anyone else taking part. Lithuania is too scared of Poland, the Czechs are far more Germanic culturally, the Russians and Serbs have their own friendship, Bulgarians are far too distant, Slovenians are too culturally Austrian, etc etc.

I could see Poland and Slovakia merging one day though...the language isn't a million miles apart, there's a common religion and way of life, there's no real historical animosity (most Poles aren't aware that Slovakia invaded Poland in 1939) and so on.

Work / English teachers in Poland - why are they so unhappy? [89]

Indeed, and it's a dreadful state of affairs. A check should be absolutely mandatory - I would be pretty angry if my child was being taught by someone that didn't even have a criminal records check. I wish I could say more...

Wasn't there a case a few years back (Harry will remember better than me, probably) with some British horse riding instructor in Kraków?

Work / English teachers in Poland - why are they so unhappy? [89]

Are they checked in any way ?

Any credible school (i.e. the vast majority of schools that aren't MEN-approved) don't do checks. It's a matter of time before something bad happens - and for what it's worth, I don't think anyone should be working with children without detailed background checks.

Good (non-MEN approved) employers will demand criminal checks, but they are few and far between.

No, they are not! Some of them works with little kids.

It gets worse, IS. I've heard of cases of people being given jobs with nothing more than a quick interview, and then being allowed to teach kids.

I could tell you about some very strange CV's that I've received in the past - including people with gaps in their life (one guy seemingly had just vanished for 3 years) story with no real explanation.

I don't want UK-levels of paranoia here, but it would be nice if a criminal check was required for every job that involves contact with kids alone.

Language / Information on Polish textbook Hurra Po Polsku [33]

Definitely. BTW how would you translate świetlica

It's a very difficult one to translate, because you also get (for example) świetlica socjoterapeutyczna which also doesn't translate too well. I suppose "recreation room" could work, but that doesn't really explain what it is. "Common room" is another possibility - but not really.

Wychowawca klasy is something like a home-room teacher in the US - is there a British equivalent?

Form teacher in England, but class tutor in Scotland (and the two are not the same thing - ours just check attendance in the morning, with pastoral duties being handled by specialist teachers). I think wychowawca and form teacher are more or less identical, though.

Are you familiar with "Difficult words in Polish-Enlgish translation" (PWN 1998)

No, I'm not, but thank you for the heads up - I'll try and find a copy here in the university library.

That means essentially cutting oneself off from one's native tongue and fraternising largely or exclusively with natives.

I found that working in a mostly Polish-only environment did the trick nicely.

Polonius, do you find yourself using Polish words when there are no easy English equals? For instance, I use świetlica.

News / Should Poland exit the EU immediately? [377]

I really think it's only a matter of time for EU to break up.

Why?

Poland and Spain have no issues with each other, for instance. Neither does Poland and Estonia, or Poland and Slovenia. The Union still works fine.

News / Should Poland exit the EU immediately? [377]

But Merkel's Folly has woken up a lot of people who don't like having such an erratic and irrational person in charge of Germany (and thinking that other countries should just blindly follow her emotional decisions). She was basically telling Hungary and Austria how to manage their borders (though the media seemed to .... not want to make that especially clear).

The thing is that it seems to be a pattern for wildly successful CDU chancellors to make such stupid mistakes. Adenauer, Kohl and now Merkel all made that single, career-defining mistake that they became known for. But it seems that she didn't consult almost anyone before announcing that Germany was open - the CSU are furious with her, the Lander are furious and plenty of other EU countries are also furious. I don't think it's a coincidence that she's gone very, very quiet recently.

This time an unaccountable decision by a German leader probably won't affect Poland very much..... but more thinking people are now thinking 'what about next time?'

They are, but I think it's also worth remembering that Poland is growing in confidence to reject such things. It doesn't seem likely that Poland will take any Muslims at all, and I don't see any evidence that the EU is able to convince Poland to do so.

My gut feeling is that Germany (to try and save face) will end up paying Poland and the others to take the refugees.

News / Should Poland exit the EU immediately? [377]

If enough Poles start to see EU membership as having what should be domestic policy decisions (like border controls) made in Germany by irrational leaders then the economic benefits might not be enough.

Border controls are an EU matter these days - the only thing that Poland has discretion over is the entry criteria for non-EU citizens, and even then, they have to respect visas issued by other EU countries. Schengen was originally outside of the EU, but it's part of the acquis these days.

The economic benefits do outweigh everything else. It would be a different story if Poland was a rich country and the target of such migrants, but because they don't care about Poland, neither does Poland care about them.

Surprise surprise. First they force you to take "refugees" and now it's migrants. Shut up Nazis, we won't do what you say.

You can and will do what they say, because it's a matter for qualified majority voting. If the vote passes, you have two choices - accept or leave the EU. And you'll accept.

But these antiPolish trolls think Poles couldnt do that.

Given that Poland wasn't doing it before 2004, it's hard to imagine how else it could be.

Hopefully the Eu gets obliterated.

Fortunately, it won't.

Im a Pole and i genuinely hate EU.

I suppose you genuinely hate the new roads, new infrastructure and everything else, too?

Hate their political correctness and hate when some money hungry non-Poles try to dictate how i should live my life and what im supposed to think.

Then give everything back. It's fair enough - Poland can stay like Belarus in return.

F**k EU dotations. So called "dotations".

Sure, you can go back to the laughable road network of 2003, and the laughable train network that consisted of nothing but train stations filled with tramps urinating all over the walls.

Although i live in the UK i would had no issues going back even tomorrow.

So why don't you go back? :/

The reason EU is so willingly donating is very easy to figure out. It all goes to create infrastructure and less effort-demanding ways to keep exploiting our country.

I really wonder what value the EU gets from spending a vast amount of money on Poznan's water supply.

News / Poland's PiS party members and crime [346]

Awful isn't it, they just use public finds like their own.

Indeed, and I notice that the usual suspects are absolutely silent on this. Just shows that they support Poland being robbed, just not by "the other guys".

Ironside? Polonius? Wulkan? Grzegorz? Come on, surely one of you PiS lovers has something to say about yet another person connected to the twins being caught.

News / Poland's PiS party members and crime [346]

Another day, another scandal involving PiS and fraudulent expenses.

Son's mobile paid for by the Sejm, flights for the family paid for by the Sejm, an exceptionally high amount of kilometres claimed (for transport by car) - PiS candidate in Warsaw and current member of the provincial parliament, Małgorzata Gosiewska must explain in the prosecutor's office.

polska.newsweek.pl/malgorzata-gosiewska-afera-kilometrowka-komorka-przeloty-,artykuly,370773,1.html

Corrupt to the bone.

Interestingly, this is yet another person that was very well connected to the Kaczyński twins. She worked in Lech Kaczyński's Presidential office. So now - we have Duda, Gosiewska and Hofman - all three were very close to the twins, and all three have been involved in fraudulent expense claims. The stench of corruption around PiS grows ever stronger.
