Food / What's more popular in Poland beer or vodka? [59]

alcohol is haram

Not necessarily. It depends on your own interpretation and which "fiqh" you follow.

And of course there are many things that are haram for Polish Catholics however millions of them still do those things.

Law / Gun control in Poland: should Polish people be allowed to own guns? [1070]

Another massacre in American school

Another? Then again, they're so common that they're no longer a big news item outside the country they happen in.

There seems to be a section of American society who can't quite believe that people in other countries pity them and are glad that we don't have their guns or their lack of a health service.

Life / A Muslim Arab in Poland who loves Polish KABANOS & VODKA [20]

@Alien
Kabanos (provided that it's the real thing and not that horrible 'drobiowy' or the 'plant based' one) is delicious but karkówka is never good.

It would suit Arab tastes though, basically meat for the sake of it.

Travel / About cars, electric and combustion in Poland. [162]

VW on the brink of bankruptcy again.

At least they can't get away with closing factories they have abroad in order not to close them at home.

As various commentators have been pointing out recently, Germany is an analogue country in a digital world.

the far right in Britain comrade.

There are very few of them and most are semi-literate with an IQ of 90, type 2 diabetes and a BMI of 40+ so we don't need to.

Existing laws suffice and there's several political parties to choose from with a thriving opposition and regular changes of ruling party at elections so people of all political persuasions have something to choose from.

far worse than anything that was done by Ukraine to RuSSian speakers before 2014:

I'd say that nothing bad was done to r*SSian speaking Ukrainians, most of whom are in fact either Surzhyk speakers or speakers of Odesa dialect anyway.

copyright issues

They can't make fakes as easily. That's a problem for them since fake products are extremely common in China.

Another problem with buying stuff from China is that you have zero comeback if there's a problem with the quality of the product. Sometimes they even send different products.

And of course it's doing workers in Poland or elsewhere in Europe out of their jobs.

Travel / What can Poland do to attract more tourists? Llamas farm? [71]

Swedes and Anglos using Poland as some cheap replacement for Amsterdam - t

More likely to be people from further east. And wait until the Chinese discover it.

Just ask Nepal, or Iceland.

And the UK too. I was in London recently and found the over-tourism depressing. York, near my home, suffers from over-tourism and there are awful stories about Edinburgh and Canterury.

Krakow already has a serious problem with over-tourism. The last couple of times I was there for meetings, it wasn't pleasant to see.

A little surprising that Germans are not in top 5.

I'd guess it's more that they have a lot of wine in the south and west, some of it very good.

It's always worth being wary about alcohol consumption stats.

Off-Topic / Is this English phrase correct? [22]

Centrum

I'd have used that word or Ośrodek which sounds nicer.

Probably the latter since (sometimes) foreigners speaking a language often instinctively try to avoid using words in that language that are similar to their own for fear of overuse.

Polish

We aren't talking about Polish. Poles have their own language, named after them. Just as we have our own language, named after us.

was used by Shakespeare

It is not, however, used in Standard English.

And since Polish has a word (even several) that suffice, it is pointless to borrow a word from a non-standard form of English.

St. Paul establishing the church

He did. And went to a very great effort to do so.

Against all the odds, since it was an extremely socially liberal radical movement in a very conservative authoritarian environment.

News / Is NORD STREAM dangerous for Poland's natural enviroment? [540]

The evidence is irrefutable

There isn't evidence. The UK PM advised them to stay strong while others didn't.

A lot of bluster there, intended to distract from the groundswell in support for r*SSia within Germany, including its government and military. At least one thing is certain; there will be no more cheap oil/gas deals wtht r*SSia, ever. That boat has sailed.

A 'respectable PM'? We always did. Although I disagree with the politics of those in office between 2010 and 2024, they were certainly all respectable, even Sunak.

I dont, they are just like that in posts when I quote them.

They've been 'just like that' for around a decade and nobody else has that problem.

I don't believe you.

Life / Poles turn their backs on organised religion. [148]

Because that's how God created them

What makes you think that?

Why do you think that so many countries' photos of our solar system are "manufactured nonsense".

BTW, your screenshot from a religious website is simply wrong and aimed at propagating that denomination's own point of view. And it's "centre" in standard English, not some local dialect form, 'center'.

News / Is NORD STREAM dangerous for Poland's natural enviroment? [540]

there is nothing to suggest that London had greater trust in the Ukrainian ability to withstand an invasion

There is, which is why the then PM alone supported Ukraine right from the start when other countries' leaders would have been happier if President Zelenskyy gave up and didn't do anything that might affect their dodgy oli/gas deals with the pariah state r*SSia.

And yes, not only is it the only major country in Europe that is fully independent, it's also the only one without a lame duck political leader.

The UK was well-positioned to actually make a difference for Ukraine until 2022.

And did make a difference.

Anyway, 'Nordstream' in both its iterations is long gone and will never be replaced.

BTW, if you want to reply to my posts, don't remove my name from the quote. It is a weird and strangely passive aggressive thing to do to every poster as a matter of course.

more preferential policies will be given to ethnic minorities

If locking them in 're-education camps', banning their books, splitting up their families and closing down their places of worship are "preferential policies", I'll stick with western values.

People should remember that if they buy Chinese products (hard not to however decent people should try to avoid them) they are financially supporting one of the most repressive political regimes on the planet. They are also taking jobs from industrial workers and wholesalers in Europe.

Even in 'eastern China', the conditions of factory workers is appalling. Some workplaces have fences on the roof to stop employees from killing themselves

And isn't it? Do you think the planets and our star revolve around earth? Why?

Satan, has already lost. You are fighting a losing battle.

Yes, he's a reactionary conservative.

1720s/1730s. 1820s/30s were already after the anti-French revolution

You mean the pro-French revolution.

Date-wise? Maybe towers, troubadours, golden coins and whatever they slew back then. I'd have suggested Grendal however by the late medieval period he was as worn out and past-date as Jarosław Kaczyński's political vision.

the rise of anecdotes

I suspect we'll be seeing a lot more of that number crunching; they're harvesting data like crazy for their quantum computing to make predictions and decisions from.

The Chinese government are taciturn about it however of the many thousands of their citizens round the world do it, some do get caught. And they'll harvest any data including shopping lists.

Berber's are quite interesting people. I don't much like their pickled meat (if you'd ever lived in PL, you'd have probably encountered it across the border in Czech) however they're interesting people.

It's strange but nice when you hit that mark where you've lived in Poland not only longer than anywhere else but even for most of your life and longer than most people born there.

dark side. Don't let the bad guy win.

Yes. Ciemnogród, reaction and nationalism must always be defeated like a dragon to slay.

Fortunately they are of course always defeated in the end.

No, that's never been true.

It would be a mitigating factor if you could understand even basic Polish or if you'd lived outside your home town on the opposite side of the Atlantic to Poland but alas, you haven't...

Torq/Kania for all his Sarmatian dreaming does at least live in PL. Even some of those who weren't born in PL have lived here for almost twice as long as you've been alive.

Sure, if you want a liberal, modernist, politically correct opinion.

And if you want an illiberal, reactionary and weirdly 20s/30s opinion based on romance rather than logic, I'm sure he'll turn to you as quickly as Dmowski pulled his trousers down and bent over the altar for Dollfuss.

History / Poles should apologise to Ukrainians first [395]

So you waited for six months

Or even just saw it.

The difference between 'nationalism' and a normal liking for one's culture is that the former is a euphemism for something very unpleasant, the politics of exclusion on arbitrary grounds.
