News / Scandals, conflicts, tensions, arguments - real life examples from Poland [543]

Tomasz Duklanowski

Saw this story on this nasty piece of work....

oko.press/tomasz-duklanowski-kim-jest-ten-czlowiek

takeaways: He's gone too far before but then goes all religious to try to get out of it....

money quote: "Mówił, że modli się, by mniej nienawidzić opozycji. Bo wie, że nienawiść to grzech" (He said he prays to hate the opposition less, because he knows that hate is a sin)

scandal: Two years ago he received "Krzyż Kawalerski Orderu Odrodzenia Polski" (Knight's Cross of the Order of Restored Poland, the second highest order awarded in Poland.

This must be revoked!

News / What should Poland do with the problem of Belarus? [1800]

until Belarus breaks its toxic ties with Russia

It will only do that once it realizes the money train is over (the basic dynamic is that lukashenka dangles the offer of the 'union state' in front of putain in exchange for money and never delivers).

word is, that his recent trip to China was about assurances against russian expansionism.... supposedly China doesn't like russian claims against other countries (because the idea of redrawing borders opens up a bunch of pandora's boxes for china too)

Off-Topic / What's your connection with Poland? Penpals. [595]

Why would you project something

Maybe I'm confused and it's you that's the bad driver? Didn't you pretend you didn't need a driver's license some time in the past?

History / What should Russia and Poland do to become if not friends, then at least not enemies? [945]

An agreement is a contract.

Like the Budapest memorandum, signed by russia (which then unilaterally broke its word)

he agreement was that NATO would stay where it was at the time this subject was discussed

nope it wasn't

nobody will be executed or fed to the bears

you mean as already happened in MAriupol (10s of thousands of civilians killed by russia?) or Bucha? Those won't happen again?

you are not only old, but you're crazy, crazy crazy

go to russia if you like the way they do things... the US is clearly not your type of country

History / What should Russia and Poland do to become if not friends, then at least not enemies? [945]

after breaking all the agreements on NATO

There was never any formal agreement. Stop lying you lying liar. If any russians actually think there were agreements then they're even stupider than I thought... and that's saying something!

Please point to any proof that there was ever a formal agreement or shut up about it forever.

News / News article on Poland absorbing Ukrainian refugees [47]

Presumably it's the tragic circumstances

The ongoing migration that picked up in the late teens played a role too... Ukrainian labor was an important part of Polish economic success then and that helped create positive feelings about both countries in both countries.....

if 10 million of them invaded Poland.

we'll probably never know because russia's openly stated plan to create 10's of millions of refugees by attacking civilian infrastructure (a war crime) failed... spectacularly! like every other russian failure in this war....

so.... mind your own beeswax son, you ain't in our league with your russian coxxvkking

influx of Ukrainians ... has been a success

It's not all problem free... but what's surprising his how few problems there are... and the NYT doesn't have a framework for that.

UK, Ireland / What English food would you serve a Pole? [172]

if you judge food by the breakfasts in downmarket tourist venues,

I resent that implication!

I did have a very nice Beef Wellington with onion sauce in Malta a few years ago and some other (presumably British things) that were nice so it's not all terrible but... fried tomatoes are the devil and beans for breakfast is the Devils' Mass!

Kindly name a newspaper

journalism in the US is dead.... long story that began with Gannet buying up regional papers in the early 1980s and ending with most NYT writers not having any real journalism experience....

reactions from Polish members?

Yes the NYT is an objectively terrible newspaper and reading it for information is not a good idea....

From my viewpoint in terms of numberrs it seems a lot like late 2019 before the pandemic I hear lots of russian/Ukrainian on the street and in public transport and in stores (among both customers and staff).

Numbers are definitely down from last March-June or so

Not certain why the NYT thinks teachers need 're-training'....

Ukrainian (which they've all had in school even if they mostly speak russian) is so close to Polish that children achieve fluency very quickly and AFAIK there have been no calls for Ukrainian or russian language education for them.

The historical animosity is mostly a polonia and/or far right concern at present. It's not something that the overwhelming majority of Polish people think of often.

Polls among migrants are notoriously unreliable and whether a person stays longer or returns home is subject to a lot of different factors. Many are staying for the time being and we'll see what happens after the russians are chased from Ukrainian lands.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a bunch of Polish people who go to Ukraine then to take part in rebuilding opportunities....

News / Mr President Joe Biden comes to Poland again [177]

if the Commie Chinese are successful brokering a peace deal

the Chinese "deal" might as well have been written by the chatbot... anonymous with no new ideas (crucially no method of enforcement should russia decide to break it.... which it will because no russian government can be trusted to keep any deals....

So.... so far
Biden - 2
putain -0

the mere fact that China is proposing this is recognition that the US has the initiative (not necessarily really due to Biden himself).

UK, Ireland / What English food would you serve a Pole? [172]

the cheddar you have in the USA

He's not in the US... he's in Deutschland. I don't think Germany has that many cheese traditions? Or am I crazy?

I'm a little surprised that there hasn't been much in the way of artisanal cheese in Poland (unlike say kiełbasa or bread where some traditional forms have been revived in recent years). There might be some nicer white cheeses but they were also generally better in the PRL...

Polish cheese is far superior to most of what can be found in the US (or abominations like 'cheese food') but it's nothing special by European standards...

I also only recently discovered 'reneta' apples (reinette) at a peasant market I go to at times. They used to be widely grown in Poland and are now mostly supplanted by reddish rocks in grocery stores. Very nice, soft but firm and mostly sweet with a very faint sourness in the mix.

I've never been on a stay in the UK so I don't have much to say about British food beyond the versions that make it to tourist hotels in places like Spain or Malta... and that is.... mostly.... not good.... fried tomatoes are just.... blech (why do that to a poor defenseless tomato.... why?) and the idea of beans for breakfast is still something I haven't come to terms with....

Glamorgan sausages, Lincolnshire haslet, cock-a-leekie or cullen skink

So many British dishes sound like slang names for sexually transmitted diseases.... don't forget clotted cream, kippers or spotted dick....

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

why Poles don't eat parsnips and swede.

If, by swede you mean 'rutabaga' then Poles are convinced that, like turnips, they cause digestive problems (maybe domestic varieties do...)

I think they were also eaten during after WWII so they may have been classified as poverty food that people avoid when times are better (the elderly mother of one friend of mine won't touch rabbit for that reason).

In the US I used to cut rutabagas into little strips and fry them like french fries.... I also miss turnips (the white type that are purple at the top)...

parsnip is the root part?

pasternak and pietruszka look very similar which may have lead to the mistranslation of parsley root as parsnip (found in some dictionaries I think) but they are different plants and have different tastes (similar but distinct).

In Europe, AFAICT, many or most countries have one or the other but not both.
