Life / Poland's birthrate on the decline [480]

@johnny reb, but you wrote this about a defenseless child:

The dr. should have squeezed the forceps a little harder to finish the job on you.

This is f*cked up.

In my village they also call it that. Amasing.

Interesting :))

Btw, I've always enjoyed helping my grandparents to hull (? - to remove them from their pods) broad beans after harvesting them - there's something satisfying about it :))

And what is this all about?:

Broad beans?

Yes, of course! :)) Boiled broad beans, to be precise. In Polish called "bób". In my family fondly called "bober" ;) All my family loves it, me included :d We don't eat it as a meal or part of a meal, but more like a kind of a snack. I peel the skin and eat them without it, but there are people who eat those broad beans with skin, especially if they're young. Young broad beans are delicious (when they're green and springy inside) :)) You can tell the young ones apart - their skin gets wrinkled after being boiled. The older ones get floury and I don't like them then that much.

Paulina eats them with the liver of her enemies, plus a glass of nice Chianti. hahahaha

Indeedly, haha ;D

@pawian, so now you'll know how to recognise one if you ever see it :) They come to the garden in the morning and in the evening.

In English the collective noun is a charm of Goldfinches

Thanks, I didn't know that!

Something easier this time (at least for Poles, I guess) - what is this beauty?? ;]:

European Gold Finch

Bingo!! Well done! :D 🎉🎊🥇

In Polish it's called "szczygieł" :) Adult males look like this:

szczygiel

@johnny_reb, nope, Yellow-winged Tanager doesn't live in Poland. A pretty bird too though :)

OK, a hint then - those are young birds and so their head looks different than that of adults. The head of an adult bird is very colourful. Those are one of the most colourful birds in Poland :) They have the same wings as adults though and that bird in the photo higher on the right has a very characteristic pattern for those birds on it's wing.

Another hint - they're smaller than sparrows.

And I am the perfect person to provide crazy entertainment. hahahahaha

;D I'm sure you are ;) I hope she enjoyed it, doing something crazy from time to time is good for the soul ;)

Btw, that bird riddle is a bit tricky :)

@pawian, let me know if you need tips :)

No, of course not. First of all, what can you see? And what time is it?

Are you going to sleep on it?

hihihihi sorry, no. :):):):)

No idea then... Does it have anything to do with gardening, taking care of the garden?

A photo taken today - what are those birds called (in Polish or English)? :):

UK, Ireland / Polish immigrants in the UK - victims or criminals?! [283]

Looking at the mother and stepfather's faces i suspect there's serious alcoholism involved.

First of all what they were doing to that kid would suggest serious psychopathy, imho. Alcohol only triggers what's inside you already, I think.

While I always reject it if boiled, with roux or without. Only raw cauilflower is palatable

I've never eaten it raw, I think, only boiled :)

What about this???

Hmm, don't know... Are you keeping something warm?

the leaves look interesting...

Haha... I think I know what this is... ;D

But maybe I'll let others guess...

Hint: those leaves were used in sculpture for human figures ;)

The root after grinding was used as a substitute of coffee. Kawa zbożowa - mówi to Panu coś??? hahaha

I see, thanks for the info :))

ohyeah

xD

I had to do some research - my grandma has never grown chicory in her garden :))

At the beginning it wasn`t treated as veg coz it was processed too much.

What was it used for in the past?

And this???

No idea, but the leaves look interesting... Is it a fruit or a veg?

@pawian, yes, this summer in Poland is defenitely "exotic" enough ;/ ☀️☀️☀️🤯

I will be driving next to that place next week and will take a better photo.

I can take a wild guess until then - are those foundations for road noise barriers?

:D

Ah, so that's why those leaves looked familiar - cucumber has similar leaves! :) Cool. 😎

Not so exotic as it seems coz it can be grown in Polish climate but it does need warm temperatures.

I've read that in our climate it has to be grown in greenhouse conditions.

What is this veg?

I'd say it looks like kiwano (horned cucumber, horned melon), but I thought kiwano is a fruit...

This shell isn`t walnut`s but it contains tasty food, too.

I don't know what this is, must be something exotic... The leaves look kind of familiar though... Is it a fruit or a veg?

What can you see?

Pieces of concrete?

Life / Why Polish singers are not popular abroad? [95]

As my Dad used to say, "będą z niej ludzie".🌻📀

That's already happening, I think - her albums have reached platinum and diamond levels of sells in Poland, I think (or something like that), her concerts are sold out and her songs have millions of views on YouTube:

@roz, it does, she's already popular in Poland, has her fan base, etc. :)

Btw, people often tell her that she looks like Rihanna, so here's Sara's rendition of Rihanna's "Diamonds" (it nicely shows the strength and depth of her voice) :):

I mostly don't enjoy singers singing in English

One can sing both in English and Polish as Sara did in this song for Junior Eurovision:

From the comment section:

"Seläh Zoe
I didn't know polish is this beautiful 💓Thank you Sarah for the intro."

Why not?

Doda is too kitschy and vulgar for my taste... I hope Sara will end up being a more sophisticated singer than her (I can already tell that most probably she will, fortunately :)).

What do you think of the voice of this little Polish gem ?

She's exceptional - it's not only about her beautiful voice, but her singing is very mature and she puts soul in every song :) And she definitely has a star quality about her. Imagine how she's going to sing when she's older! Wow!

At the same time she's a sweet, modest girl :)
I just hope her mother will protect her in that big world out there - she's very young and pretty...

I don't know who her coach is though.

She grew up with music - her dad is a singer:
