UK, Ireland / Why Poles will never belong in England [283]

I think there is a lot of confusion here between ethnicity and nationality. They are not the same thing. If a Nigerian man and Polish woman have a child born in Poland- what is this child? Polish? Nigerian? Nationality is Polish but ethnicity is mixed. You can't have one without the other. If your family history is only Polish- than your ethnicity is Slavic.

UK, Ireland / Why Poles will never belong in England [283]

Exactly - he is not Polish. Genes are irrelevant.

I disagree. Particularly in the "New World". We all have desire to know what our background is.- something to identify with. I am Canadian- but I am often asked where my ancestors came from. I don't just identify myself as Canadian. I will say Canadian but my ancestors came from England, Ireland, Scotland and Norway. It is the same in U.S. Yes my nationality is Canadian but my heritage is from elsewhere. In this case the two are separate. If you are German- you are a German national and have German heritage- but the two are different.

Poles can never be English. A Pole born in England is a Pole. If a dog is born in a stable that doesn't make it a horse.

Poles don't want to be English. The want to work in England and make money. They will always be Polish.

News / Polish final report on Smoleńsk aircrash [859]

Must admit, I'm going to trust the people who wrote the report over a bunch of politically motivated morons who would write anything to further their own agenda.

you don't think these people are influenced?

News / Polish final report on Smoleńsk aircrash [859]

here is another report saying there was no pressure from the President.

online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111904800304576475660195378844.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

"No signs have been found that the pilots were under pressure from the president or others to land, the committee said. The committee also pointed to procedural errors at the Polish air force detachment in charge of flying the country's top officials. The crew wasn't trained properly and lacked training on flight simulators, it said. Three out of four crew members lacked the necessary certification for flights using the Russian-made Tupolev aircraft Poland used for flying its leaders, the committee added."

Life / Rich man, poor man - today`s Poland [80]

Peace out to you and your economic husband.

he is not so bad. not a slave to his job- but he has to make money somehow. he is actually in real estate but trained in economics a staunch anti communist and loves the Kaczinski's.

Life / Rich man, poor man - today`s Poland [80]

good grief, I may have mentioned that my husband is an economics major once- maybe twice. seriously?

I think we are on the same side here. I am a socialist by nature- however, I do think everybody has the ability to have a fair shake at life.

The fact is- the ultra rich will always be ultra rich because they have the ability to do so.

I am all about fair- if we all paid our fair share than we wouldn't have so many problems. But as it stands now, the ultra rich have the ability to jerk the system- it happens everywhere.

I think the media and industry fuels our desire to want more- it is sick.
There is a natural desire to want more however, we have reached extreme and it is disgusting.

would I stop making money. the answer is yes- but I think our house is the exception. we have a goal of retiring early so we invest wisely now.

Life / Rich man, poor man - today`s Poland [80]

I disagree that rich people only spread the wealth between themselves.

of course spending fuels the economy- but how much is enough. do we need the latest flat screen or the newest mac- or the ipad 3 when it comes out? Lets use the U.S. bailout package as an example. How exactly did this help the economy. -it only helped the exec's that got it- and they didn't need it anyway- the middle class lost everything.

measure wealth on how much disposable income and savings you have. not the amount of "stuff"-- who knows if stuff was purchased on credit or cash? It is easy to look rich while living paycheck to paycheck.

"I dont agree with that at all. Its not fair that people who were born into wealth should be able to afford things which somebody more unlucky cannot."---so should I give my money away? (my husband thinks I do already)

Ethiopia doesn't have the infrastructure or social systems of countries in the west. not a fair comparison.

If you are born poor- it is possible to get out of the "poor cycle" if you live in a western country. There are opportunities to go to school- there is night school, part time, week end. There are opportunities to improve yourself. It takes desire. If you settle with a job and settle that you will always be poor- then it will be that way.

If you are not trained in something- (plumbers, electricians, painters- trades people all make decent wages in North America.) and have no desire to learn- than you will stay poor. Should a person with no education and no training make 50,000 dollars a year?

I think the girls and ladies who work in some shops in Poland, sitting behind a cash register and doing crosswords all day- will be doing this for the rest of their lives.

I am also not talking about millionaires. They are the exception. I am talking about leaving the poor cycle and being able to own a home, car- have a job and not be in debt or a slave to a credit card.

I disagree. We live in a world where what you have and how much it costs is more important that an education. I do agree with rich staying rich. They have a better chance where those that are poor have more of a struggle for basic necessities.

However, measuring rich or poor based on how much "stuff" you have is wrong. This is why U.S is in the toilet. Spending is encouraged there.

There is nothing wrong with being poor- but also sacrifices should be made. If you can't afford a computer, tv or car- then don't get one.

In Poland it is possible to go to university on the weekends. My cleaning lady's daughter will start this sept. She is very poor- from the Ukraine. It will cost her 100 pln per month to take courses on the weekends so her weeks are free to work. She is 19 and also works as a cleaning lady.

It is possible to get out the "poor" cycle- but it takes work.
If a person decides they will be poor- than they will be. If they desire more, it can be done.

wow!! good for you and I am glad you have had a great experience. As for the "why Poland" question. This is a standard question that Poles ask foreigners- I get it all the time.

Definately don't make yourself a target. But this goes without saying for everybody.

If you are looking for a good investment try sea towers in Gdynia. They are amazing with a taras that wraps around the apartment. To the left side of the building-the land has been bought by Ikea and they are planning to do residential in this space.

Food / What's your favorite Polish coffee? [73]

Yes - and if one is (like me) a genuine coffee lover, who detests instant, it is worth paying a bit extra for something to cherish.

thanks for writing this- it is exactly how I feel. I am a coffee snob, so what. I don't think I am better for it- I enjoy my coffee and as a result I am willing to buy a more expensive brand.--to tell my friends, no, to brag to others, seriously, no. Like I wrote earlier, Kronung Jakobs is manufactured by Kraft. I don't buy Kraft products. I read my labels and I am conscious about the things I feed my family. It doesn't have anything to do with being a snob. I also take the coffee out of the bag and put it in a canister. Only I know what brand it is.

And I am not brand obsessed. None of my clothes have any label on it. I am anti label- which is rare in this country.

Jacobs is Kraft. Stay away from it. There are so many better coffees than that. I think I am a coffee snob though. I would rather spend the money on good coffee.

good grief. there is coffee here. You can get it at any grocery store. If you buy sh*t than you get sh*t. Who drinks instant? It is cardboard fake coffee.

LavaAzza is good. Personally, I don't eat anything from Kraft or Nestle- it is mass produced crap.
Polish people drink Turkish style coffee- this is why there are grounds in the bottom.
If you are just visiting- and you are staying in a hotel, they will have regular brewed coffee.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

Umm, no. That's just a Leftist Socialist lie that gets repeated by simpletons.

actually, you are way wrong. It is the right wing propaganda telling you this. Do your homework. Who got the bailout. Middle America? I think not. Corporations and banks. Not the people that are now living in tent city.

tax cut after tax cut- American corporations are still investing abroad. My husband deals with these people daily. In fact, he had his best year this year from American investors. Good for Poland, sucky for you. I can count how many American companies have invested in Poland while shutting their doors in the U.S.

Too bad it will be too late for people like you who follow the flock.

As for the bottom 50 %- how can they pay if they don't have it. And of course the wealthy don't pay enough, so the tax burden is on middle America. Too rich and too poor all at the same time.

And then there are people like you who spout the dribble of the right wing.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

no, actually I don't think America is civilized. I think the idea of America is great- however, there is a reason the economy is in the toilet and the rich are getting richer and not paying their fair of taxes.

Any country that would let its citizens die because they can't afford health care is not civilized.
Any country that would rather invest elsewhere- such as China, all to save a buck- is not civilized.
Any country that allows manufacturers to pollute the environment while making money doing it -is not civilized.
Guns are just stupid. And the people that have them, unless Police or the like, are even more stupid.
