Life / Why Do You Love Poland? [907]

You need to go to the health shops (I'm speaking about Scotland as I have never lived in England) to get pure carrot juice. There are other options but the fact remains that you can always make your own.

Why else do you love Poland, Gumi?

What on earth are you going on about, Gumi? Poland and Britain both have Powerade alike. What's your point? Fortuna and Hortex tend to produce real fruit juice but many don't. Britain also has pure fruit juice, you know!?

Logic tells you to buy your own oranges and squeeze them yourself, right?

Life / Things that annoy you in Poland. [133]

That really is a horrible number. There's a direct correlation with stress. I wish people wouldn't treat life so much like a battle. Relax and let things flow, take it in your stride and don't endanger the lives of others.

Wow, that was a good and perceptive post, Loesje. I agree that Poland is beautiful and has many nice people but the hatred is instilled. I call what you said the 'do widzenia na odpierdo* się'. It's downright nasty!

Yeah, the indifference is incredible at times. I sometimes use a controversial statement to spark off discussions in class. Otherwise, they just shrug and don't care. When in Gliwice.....LOL

I'd be at my wits end if I let it get to me but I don't. I miss my family, they are much more alive.

Language / Terms of endearment in Polish [222]

Muffin is mufinka I think but it is slang for, well, the same in English you know? ;)

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

Szwed, I meant that the juice can be a chaser and thus change the flavour of the clear vodka.

TM, yeah, back for Xmas :) Fair stoked :)

It's good to discover new worlds. I remember being in uni and all I knew was Smirnoff. How the world changes :)

Real ale :) :) :) 2.5 months and I'll be tucking into some good stuff.

That's what juice is for, SwedishPole ;) ;) Nah, flavoured ones can make good gifts.

They know that pricing it higher would put it into gift category status and they don't wanna do that. They want your average Pole to drink it.

Sledz, the picture is getting clearer. Żubrówka is the option for you if you want sth a little different. Wyborowa seems to be the most popular choice amongst Poles with a bit more to spend. Luksusowa is popular too but Wyborowa takes it. For me personally, it's Pan Tadeusz every time (apart from the time it was Dębowa ;))

Food / Polish Pizza !! The best in the world? [330]

It is 'different' to put ketchup on pizza. It's good with margherita for example. On pizzas with many toppings, much less so.

I'm sure Hellmans and Heinz are happy. My fiancee had fried cheese on toasted bread earlier, having applied a huuuuuge dollop of ketchup. I felt like asking her if she wanted any cheese with her ketchup ;)

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

The grammar isn't that bad, I've heard. My Taiwanese friend wanted to teach me but I was happy learning Japanese at that time. The intonation is tough. 4 tones in Mandarin and 7 in Cantonese, I think. One tone different makes the difference between anus and grandma. If there are Chinese on here, please confirm this.

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

I reckon my linguistic awareness is pretty decent so I can imagine there being several languages more difficult than Polish. Some take to other languages more easily. For example, you could have sb with a talent for languages struggle with an 'easier' language because of lack of interest or incompatible thinking.

Criteria does exist for classifying difficulty but it doesn't work in all cases.

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

It's only half decent with apple juice and I can't imagine how it can be seen as the best. However, it does have a character that most clear vodkas don't have.

Pan Tadeusz gets my vote! I've heard that Dębowa is really good. I bought it as a gift for an acquaintance.

Pan Tadeusz is the ideal gift. A vodka with character and history.

Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

Yeah, they hire people with white gloves to push them onto trains. That's just nuts. Youtube has some stuff on this.

Backstabbing is quite international, that's true.

Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

Aha, I see your point. I've heard of some conniving types but I steer well clear. That's why I spend so much time in front of my computer as I'm just not interested in people's games or snide remarks.

Me me, gibber gibber just doesn't float my boat.

Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

If it's not too personal, what kind of things did you help her with?

Poland is much like Japan in that people go against their nature sometimes. My friend Yoko Okada has told me on several occasions that the Japanese are repressed and boiling up inside. They stick to tradition and expected ways of being waaaaaay too much and Poland is much the same. Come on people, think outside the box.

Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

Hate is a very strong word as others have pointed out. OK, 3 more.

1) The chances taken at crossings. A headstrong alpha male driver approaching a hesitant/indecisive old biddie poised to cross is a recipe for disaster.

2) The backstabbing too. I received a terrible offer in the summer of 2008 to extend my contract with the school I had been teaching at for 8 months. I know now that they have 3 native speakers so they were speaking out of their arses when they said that the funds weren't there. Then the offerer had the cheek to invite me to one of her friend network things. You can imagine my delight in turning her down.

3) I'll be lenient and stick to 2 :)

Life / Are foreigners welcome in Poland? [305]

You were welcomed with open legs, oops, I mean arms? My welcoming party was pretty impressive. I remember a guy called Jerzy, who I still know to this day, being such a cool guy and shouting me a couple of beers.

Sadieann, what they say is somehow golden and whatever you have to say is always going to be second best. I get that too.

Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

1) Many are too apathetic and indifferent

2) Gibberf*cks spilling stories that you don't wanna hear

3) Some don't know when to back off. Also, the court programmes here are full of whiny and intolerable people. My fiancee seems to tolerate them somehow.

Food / Polish Pizza !! The best in the world? [330]

M-G, I was talking specifically about soups. Go to the Baxters of Speyside website as an example. Generally, I don't rate Scottish food so highly (fish and soup being the exception).

As for pizza, we have some great places too. Piccolo, Snappy's and PHD are really worth going to.
