Life / Why are so many Polish People rude on the internet? [96]

I'd say it's because internet is much younger in Poland therefore most of its users are 14 year old boys going through puberty. In every country these boys make probably something like 70% of useless swearing on the internet..

Language / Polish slang phrases - most popular. [606]

Is the word 'koteczku' (kitty) still used to refer to girls these days?

Yes it is - koteczku, kotku, kotusiu - I heard these three, the second one "kotku" is the most popular one.

"Nie ma chuja na Gabrysia"

"There none who can deal with Gabryś"

myslisz, ze kiedys tak? czy nie? moze...? wszystkiego mej

so you think that someday? yes ? or no? maybe...?
"wszystkiego mej" doesn't make much sense but it sounds like "wszystkiego naj" which is "best wishes" ("naj" from "najlepszego") and I dunno what it is so "slang" about these words that you had to post it in here

Life / Things that annoy you in Poland. [133]

And no matter how many times it is advised, it still isn't true. The tap water here is perfectly safe to drink.

That depends where you live, I wouldn't recommend drinking tap water in Silesia, I've already said that in the "tap water" thread. It's ok after filtering/boiling or both.

Travel / Castles and Palaces in Poland (with pictures) [155]

discarded and used as a dump by the locals

When I was in Ukraine about 8 years I've seen many castles being used this waynot a single one in Poland. Still, some are in a pretty delapidated state because of lack of funds for renovation.

sha clef - "psiakrew" - dog's blood ; ) that's one of Polish variations of "damn"
holeta - "cholera" - cholera as above

less probable :

holeta - "hołota" - rabble / trash ( about a noisy/aggresive group of people )

Genealogy / Want to find a person [769]

Hello

The only things I found is this entry:

nargeo.geo.uni.lodz.pl/~geogrfiz/pracemagisterskie.html

it's a webpage of physical geography faculty at the Ludz University, there's a topic of her thesis next to name from 1994, I doubt they would give you any information at the Uni, but you can always give it a try and write an email to their deanary, you can always say you're a foreign long lost cousin ; )

Study / Rumor about racism - will I be fine in Poland as a black International student from Africa? [245]

I disagree. I think it's easier to get into troubles and real fights

Wrong, there's much much more knife and gun crime in UK, from what I heard it's better now, but there are places and cities well known for it's knife crime rate, there's no such things here in Poland, of course you have your dangerous districts, but it's not to the same degree as it is in UK. The only area we are "better" in is road traffic, excidents, collisions more of them in here..

On the topic, in Warsaw you'll be just fine - of course not the same as at home - without the knowledge of your surroundings it's always worse.. and always not as at home, but you'll probably get familiar with the area and feel safer with time.

Po polsku / Nazywam się Jade i mieszkam w Anglii. [37]

I'm also impressed with your language skills, I'm teaching my english friend polish, and although I am polish I find it really difficult to explain some parts of the polish grammar, hell, I have problems with understanding some of them by myself ; ) It's something you usually learn in ground school and forget, and later you just "feel" how different things should be said.

As previous posters wrote, "nie wiem robić" would translate into "don't know do", and they have given you a good explanation. You can also find a teacher pretty easily, probably you would find lots of eager people in here, or maybe through some language exchange pen palling sites : )

Good luck with your polish!

That's narrowmindedness. The Krk /Kościół r....

Don't be so extreme in your judgement, polish church took a big part in the fight against communism, as much as I dislike certain things about church and religion, I'm still able to see those things.

Generalising:
1. homogeneous society, lack of multiculturalism and following it closely different forms of chauvinism and fobias
2. politicians
3. beauracracy.. in micro and macro scale..

Life / Popular and Practical Cars in Poland [49]

I don't think 4x4 cars are that popular in Poland at all, they are still an expensive vehicle for most of Poles - initial costs and maintance (they consume a lot) , but having one would be pretty handy while driving through Polish roads.. just recently I bent one of my rims in my little Honda Civic ; )

Language / Polish Swear Words [1242]

nice ass - niezły tyłeczek / niezły tyłek, more vulgar - niezła dupa/dupka
you look lovely - wyglądasz ślicznie

although it's probably a wrong order, first you say she is lovely, then that she has a nice ass and then ask if she likes doggystyle ; ) not in the opposite direction

Language / Your perception of the Polish accent [145]

I was talking about accent, not dialect.

Oh, sorry, my bad. I was just afraid that some people might get the wrong idea after reading that, but actually it was me who was mistaken, because of course one can discuss accent without mentioning the dialect.

Language / Your perception of the Polish accent [145]

They often use o instead of a.

Isn't it oversimplifying a bit? Siliesian is a whole dialect.. not just changing a to o. The amount of different words may actually make people from different parts of Poland unable to understand somebody who speaks Silesian. And changing a to o sometimes occures in the sociodialect of thugs and other people from pathological communities..

Language / Your perception of the Polish accent [145]

I also think that in Poland there's no big variety in accents, you've got the "góralski" highlander accent, Silesian which is a mix of German and Polish, Kashubian, and maybe Podlaski, these 4 are most "different", the rest is just "a bit" different, I'm from Silesia and I can clearly hear that fi. people from tri-city speak with just a slightly different accent then the Polish recieved pron. but I wouldn't recognise them as people from tri-city just by listening to them speaking...
