Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

On Wednesday high school students took a foreign language exam. Over 90% choose English. Additionally, students are required to choose one subject at an advanced level - it can be anything but 60% choose English as well.

Here is last year`s advanced written exam sheet paper.
cke.gov.pl/images/_EGZAMIN_MATURALNY_OD_2015/Arkusze_egzaminacyjne/2018/formula_od_2015/jezyk_angielski/MJA-R1_1P-182.pdf

A standard exam always starts with listening tasks. Then text comprehension, vocabulary and grammar exercises and essay writing. Actually , it can be an article, essay or a formal letter.

See a part of the grammar task

9.1.
The demolition company has destroyed the bridge.
PULLED
The bridge __________________________________________by the demolition company.

9.3.
I'm sure the Browns considered their decision to adopt the dog very carefully.
MUST
The Browns ________________________________________ their decision to adopt the dog very carefully.

And an essay - two topics to choose from:

Banning cars from city centres is getting more and more popular. Write an essay about advantages and disadvantages of such a ban.

More and more people take up jogging for health reasons. Write an article about the reasons behind its popularity and relate an interesting joggin event in which you participated.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

Once I fancied chicken liver and used to eat it twice/thrice a month,

I gave up chicken liver but canned cod liver is still my fav.

What do you think of it? It is fatty and so soft it melts on your tongue.

History / Heritage of partitions still present in Poland [107]

Guys, I started a new thread about communism. avoid off topic posts here.

The vocabulary borrowings from the partitioners` languages are an important part of Polish heritage today.

Poznań region adopted many words from German.

E..g, bana - train - from German Bahn. (der, die or das? I never remember)

More here:

regionwielkopolska.pl/kultura-ludowa/gwara/podreczny-slownik-gwary-poznanskiej.html

brecha - łom
bryle - okulary
ganc - zupełnie, całkiem

History / Modern myths and legends about communist past in Poland [250]

That's actually a great idea.

Yes, the idea for this thread originated in another thread.

I like reading comments under various articles describing contemporary lifestyle in Poland and I don`t remember a single article without a poster going like: In communism it was a good life because... or during communist times such things were unthinkable or before Solidarity we had real.....

Some of these comments might be produced by Kremlin trolls because they follow certain fixed pattern, some by Polish trolls who are bored but some must be written by people disappointed with today`s capitalist reality.

Myths are an result of focusing on positive and good facts from a collective history.

Yes, people tend to forget bad sides and prefer to remember only good ones.

However, doing so, they too often embelish those positive things, making them nearly perfect, which is against historical accuracy, of course.

Is it like in the anecdote about an old aristocratic French lady asked about her best time in life? She answered: The time of the French Revolution. What? Massacres, persecutions, beheadings are the best? Yes, because I was 18 years old then.

How can we do it? Provide an exampe of a myth and bust it right away.

The sausage one in particular reminds me of a discussion

In communism sausage was real, made according to strict technological norms (mostly meat) and without additives.
People forget that:
- there were long periods when sausage and meat was rationed.
- there were only a few kinds of sausage available.
- today they complain about cheapest sausages for 10 PLN but if they pay more, like 25, they can buy excellent product. Let alone one for 40 PLN.

Yes, also people were nicer to each other, there was no such corruption or cheating, sausage was real etc etc. We should start a new thread about myths of communism.

News / Degenerate "rainbow" eyesore to disappear from Saviour Square (Plac Zbawiciela) in Warsaw [297]

Rainbow Madonna is probably going to cause a similar scandal as the Warsaw Rainbow. After the police arrested the creator of the poster, activists threaten to stick the controvercial pictures all over Poland. They have already done it on several buildings in Warsaw.

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of offending religious sentiment, after posters bearing an image of the Virgin Mary with her halo painted in the colours of the rainbow flag appeared in the city of Płock in central Poland.

Crow, I suggest you start a new thread about Central European Union and Poland in it. This thread is about the EU, not other unions. If you do it, I will gladly participate. Right now, you are creating a little pollution here.

News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1199]

Why was it illegal?

There are certain restictions on state aid to companies, Polish government and the fallen shipyards had broken them. According to the EC, shipyards only took money and did nothing else. That was against the rules.

The Commission has doubts whether the companies undertook adequate capacity reductions to compensate for the distortion of competition and whether the beneficiaries' own contributions are sufficient to demonstrate their commitment to restructuring.

What about them? As a non-smoker, I have no idea.

News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1199]

How about cons? Some people blame the EU`s policy for leading to the bankruptcy of the Polish shipyards. They were in difficult financial situation a dozen years ago so the Polish government granted them state aid several times. However, the EU declared it had been illegal and the loans had to be returned. In result, Szczecin and Gdynia shipyards were closed down in 2009 and their property was auctioned off.

The last launch took place on 25 April 2009,[2] and the dismissal of employees was conducted at the end of May 2009.[3]

In this beginning period, Galicia was very much exploited by the new masters,

Yes, that poverty was proverbial. About 50.000 peasants starved to death each year. But you know, people love creating myths about the past, they tend to forget bad things if combined with good ones. Hence, Decent Partitioner.

It isn`t only money that Poland gets from the EU for various projects. EU legislation also imposes improving quality of life, e.g, through protection of environment. In 2020 all members are required to be able to recycle 50% rubbish. In Poland, serious rubbish segregation started in 2007, I remember those 4 seperate bins..

Again it is a bit inconsistent. You love modern Russia which officially and directly links itself to the heritage of the Soviet Union, yet you complain about communism. :)

Yes, the Days of Austria are held in Krakow in October and November. Theatre plays, lectures, exhibitions, concerts.
krakow.wyborcza.pl/krakow/7,44425,22549919,dni-austrii-w-krakowie-koncerty-wyklady-teatr.html

The Austro-Hungarian Emperor, Franz Joseph I, was liked in Galicia partition zone.

Decent partitioner. so called. Not without a reason.

Did you know that it was in the Austrian partition where Matejko, Kossak, Styka and other renowned artists painted their great patriotic pictures, e..g, , Rejtan, Racławice Panorama, 3rd May Constitution, Stańczyk,? That was out of question in two other partitions. Rejtan was even bought by Franz Joseph and displayed in his private gallery.

You suggest it was omitted on purpose? :) No need to be so suspicious and sniff conspiracy theories, nobody omitted anything, we were just waiting for such an explanation as yours:

The decades of neglect during communist era and "central planning" focused on heavy industry which favored regions rich in coal

Yes, it is a plausible one.

Austro-Hungarian part was quite laid back. Economy was poor but Polish had much more freedom there .

Yes, it is true. In the Austrian zone Poles could freely speak Polish, make careers in Austro-Hungarian administration (two Polish Prime Ministers for Austro-Hungary!) , develop Polish schools and universities etc. Various Polish revolutionaries from the Russian or Prussian partition zones took refuge in Krakow and they were fully safe because Austrians closed an eye. Later, Józef Piłsudski and his soldiers marched out from Krakow in 1914 to liberate the rest of Poland.

That is why modern inhabitants of ex Austrian partition zone claim it wasn`t so bad after all. It isn`t boasting or being proud, because the partition was foreign occupation after all, but they believe their ancestors lived in the best partition of all as they enjoyed the greatest freedom.

Those legends of the most tolerant partition surface from time to time. E..g, Austrian Consulate or Austrian Forum of Culture in Krakow regularly hold various events reminding the past ties between Krakow and Austria, of course those positive ones only. :):)

The Austro-Hungarian Emperor, Franz Joseph I, was liked in Galicia partition zone. When he came there for an official visit in 1880, Poles welcomed him enthusiastically. The Emperor trusted Poles and always demanded they were included in the Austro- Hungarian government.

Today you can still see his countenance in various places, e.g. on mineral water bottles. Can you imagine a Russian tsar`s or Bismarck`s faces on a bar of chocolate in Warsaw or Poznań? :):):)

Thanks but it isn`t such a big deal, really. After I googled those maps showing election patterns, new ones have come up too.

The voting patterns are most likely connected more with the relative distance to Germany or having Germany as a

That`s interesting. I thought that in the times of global village such distances of 300-400 kilometres don`t matter any longer and that villagers from Podlasie go to seasonal work in Germany as often as villagers from Poznań region.

Access to a bathroom and public water system also reflects partitions. Paradoxically, the poorest ex Austrian partition has caught up a bit and now it seems the ex Russian partition is the most backward.

I think you are wrong to equate affluence and perhaps insinuate educational levels with how people vote

That is why I commented on my own words in this way:

Just a little theory which doesn`t need to be true.

I think that how people vote goes much deeper than affluence and education.

Yes, when I suggested it, I wanted to start a discussion on those voting patterns, hoping someone might enlighten us. Some posters have already tried. What about you? . Any idea?

Now, will you continue asking difficult questions or contribute sth useful to the thread? :):) E..g, have you ever been to Poland? If you have, did you see any structures built by partition powers? What were they? How are they used today? Tell us their stories.

Idiotic.

I sometimes try to adjust to my interlocutors. :) What is wrong with it? After such adjustment, people feel they have more in common with each other and then they are happier. I wanted to make you happy.

Back to topic.

All partitions powers erected various structures in their zones, many of which are put to a good use today. See pics below

Russians built Orthodox churches. There were about a dozen of them in Warsaw, but only two survived.
E.g., en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._John_Climacus%27s_Orthodox_Church,_Warsaw

Germans built the Imperial Castle in Poznań en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Castle,_Pozna%C5%84

Austrians built Krakow Fortress, a complex system of defensive fortifications in and around Krakow, e.g, around Wawel Castle or Kosciuszko Mound.

Not really. Silesian Uprisings against Germany were also succesful.

No, I remembered about them but I meant there was only one fully successful - Greater Poland Rising of 1919. 3rd Silesian Rising was only partly successful because insurgents didn`t achieve all their aims. That is why I said: probably. :)

I would expect more from you since you are a teacher.

As a teacher, I know a lot, but for God`s sake, I am not an omnibus, if you know what it means. :) Besides, I am not a teacher of History, though it is my fav hobby. :)

They are also very patriotic had to fight in a constant political, cultural and economical struggle Yet they've prevailed.

Yes, e.g., they won the 1919 Rising, probably the only one in Polish history. .

at present distinct wielkopolska values are more limited to the city of Poznan (as the commies disliked said values

The first anticommunist mass protest of workers in Poland after 2 WW took place in Poznań in 1956.

A legend says that during rallies and demos, thousands of protesters gathered in streets but apart from shouting We want bread/ freedom! they also admonished each other: Don`t tread on the grass!

the territories of the Prussian Partition were the most developed, thanks to the overall policies of the government.[7]

Not only thanks to Prussians.

No I would say they were better developed before partition.

Yes, the lands of Greater Poland had already been well developed before partitions. Prussians kept it and continued the development.

One can read about it in the book Poland From Partitions to EU Accession: A Modern Economic History, 1772-2004 available online at books.google.pl/ page 177.

Poles from Greater Poland province have built a strong local economy in XIX century strong community. Those are still valid even now

Yes, people from Poznań region of Greater Poland are considered hard working, dutiful, law abiding, diligent, well-organised. It would require a serious research to find out to what extent the Prussian partition contributed to it.
