History / Poland, Ukraine population loss in 20-th century [21]

I don`t know about Ukraine but I believe Poland would have developed more dynamically than it has so far. And instead of copying technologies from other countries, we would invent more of our own.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

A few years ago sb mentioned fava beans in this thread and asked if I had ever taken a photo of the dish. I answered I wasn`t as crazy. Times and people change, though. I took a lot pics of fava beans which I have grown in my field.

I like fava beans but they must be young - then they are al dente. Old ones are soft and floury.

Yes, best people from the elites were purposefully persecuted by occupants and often perished, with disastrous effects for the country. I see it even today - intelligent people who are able to think independently are the minority in Poland.

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

I can remember my parents putting down slug pellets as they were devouring our lettuce.

Yes, there must be some slugs because I sometimes see nibbled strawberries but they must be vampire slugs which come out at night only because I have never seen any.

I am constantly bothered by memories. :)

I'm sure though, you are more worried about the weather each year, as most farmers are.

No, I am not. As I said before, I am not pressed to have excellent crops as our subsistence doesn`t depend on them. I bought that farm as an investment but also fun. So, when sth fails, I adopt a relaxed attitude because that is nature and some things can`t be avoided. I only observe and marvel at how wonderfully complicated those natural laws are. E.g, a few days ago I noticed a dark spot in the back part of the field - when I approached, it turned out to be a carcass of a bird of prey, much larger than the one I found during my first visits to the place. Why did it die? Old age, disease, another predator or a human? I have no idea. There were no legs with talons (I usually cut them off for our home gallery) or head, only wings and the body.

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

Maybe not thoughts which suggest sth continuous or regular, but an idea which sb had and carried it out with deplorable effects. :) E..g, my mother said it to me after I nearly burnt the whole rooom down while playing with matches in the window sill under the curtains. :)

The palm tree is bouncing/has bounced off sb.

History / Heritage of partitions still present in Poland [107]

Guys, both Poles and not, in which partition would you like to live?
Succinct general description:
Prussian - best developed, high standard of life, and generally the rule of law, but also fierce Germanisation and Kulturkampf against the Church.
Russian - less developed but still not bad, a lot of industry, but fierce Russification and supression of any independent thought
Austrian - the least developed. unbelievable poverty, but a lot of freedom and no persecution of Polishness.

Genealogy / What are common Polish character traits? [425]

When you stop imagining what they do (or even watching on special channels, I don`t know), you will be more relaxed and will let off some steam that troubles you.

Stubborn, materialistic..

I possess all those features except for xenophobic and homophobic. Yes, those must be Polish traits!

It is known but not really popular recently. I used it myself and heard uttered in communist times, shortened to "won" :) But it could also be the influence of Vabank :):)

History / Heritage of partitions still present in Poland [107]

We thoroughly visited Poznań in 2011 but that Hitler office wasn`t ready then, I suppose. However, Hitler doesn`t belong to partitions! Unless we assume that Ribentrop Molotov Pact of 1939 was the 4th partition of Poland. :)

Pipa or c... - who cares?

Hey, I would never think it could be used interchangably like you just did. Have we run into a perfect partition heritage linguistic difference? - it seems I come from the Austrian while you from Prussian partition. :)

History / Heritage of partitions still present in Poland [107]

In Białowieża there is a huge portrait on display of Nikolai II of Russia, but it is inside a restaurant (the Restauracja Carska)

Wow, so there is at least one Tsar portrait in a public place in Poland! And I didn`t believe it before. Now, we only need Bismarck portrait somewhere. Anybody? :)

the rather gross name of the pub!

Why gross? Pipa is perfectly neutral. :)

I have just read an interesting article about Warsaw during tsarist times. A Warsaw historian generally tends to view that period as a lost chance of Warsaw. One thing which might be useful in this thread and is mentioned in the article is corruption that Russians introduced in their partition zone on a large scale and which still haunts Poles today. Such corruption didn`t exist in the Prussian zone, Germans mostly respected law.

News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1199]

You are only right. The Kremlin retaliated with apples ban only on Poland on the next day after EU sanctions had been declared. Funny. :) It has lasted 5 years. My God, life passes so quickly. (:(:( If Polish farmers haven`t found another market for their apples so far, they are losers, indeed.

News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1199]

he data shows that much of the growth in recent years has been with partners outside the EU,

What a pity you didn`t provide us with some links to that info. Manipulated info. If Poland scored a few hundred million euros export to China before and today it is 3 billion annually, , then, yes, we can talk about a growth. However, you prefer to ignore the fact that accumulated Polish export is worth 220 billion and the EU receives over 80% of it, so it is roughly 180 billion. You know where you can stick this 3 billion export to China? :):)

Go ask a polish farmer especially one growing applies

Hard luck. Who predicted that Russia would attack Ukraine? Sorry, that`s life. Backto explained it to you well - Polish government (it doesn`t matter now whether PiS or PO) fully supported the sanctions against Russia so don`t blame the EU for the collapse of Polish apples export..

The growth is coming from outside of the EU more and more.

Yes, but it is still peanuts compared to EU trade. Stop manipulating facts and data, it is useless.

But yes I do love Putin

We will remember about it. :)

Well, it also means very few/little of sth. It comes from a small village context: it is so small there are only two streets into the cross. - dwie ulice na krzyż (i.e. crossing). But you can also use it in other contexts.

What has shot into your head/napper?

Real Estate / Dzialki - allotment gardens regulations in Poland [27]

Who told you that? This is Poland, not Russia or Belarus. :):) I have never heard about any such restrictions. To make sure, I googled: is it allowed to grow veg on construction allotment? and nothing.

Grow whatever you can. If Poles hide veg patches in back gardens, it is because they would look stupid in front, let alone absorb pollution from the nearby street. :)

@Dirk diggler
That info about the EU is a disinformation, while the one about China is a manipulation. :):) All in all, you are talking like a true Kremlin troll. :):) Thank you for reminding us about it.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

Yes, it is a reasonable approach.

But you said cooking is an art. Are all those amateur cooks and professional chefs artists? After all, a true artist is someone who invents sth new, while most people who cook just follow tradition.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

Reading directions on box about how to cook food tells me all I need to know about bad eating habits of modern people in west.

Do you suggest that Johhny who reads such instructions is a bad boy?

Yes, it is so wrong. People from other civilisations don`t have such problems. E.g, the Chinese put all ingredients into the wok, stir fry for a few minutes and serve. How simple. And Westerners still need to read sth. That`s really humiliating.

The problem is that whatever side just spent 20 minutes sitting in its own fat on baking pan is going to be a soggy mess..

Yes, it is true.

Jonnhy, you don`t know what you are talking about. Natural bread crumbs are used to make the piece of meat crispy but they need to be fried in oil, not meat`s own fat while baking.

Nothing worse then teaching a teacher.

:):) Those adult learners are hopeless. No wonder I do my best to stay away from them in real life.

You advise us to use Shake and Bake ready made stuff. Did you check its sodium and sugars content? They are alarmingly high. Another thing: your S/B "bread crumbs" contain 0 grams fiber, while natural bread crumbs contain 6 grams of fiber per 100g. What is your fekking SB poison made of, then?? Sodium and dirt? :):):)

You hypocrite! You complained about Polish food being unhealthy in previous posts but now you are trying to kill us with some fekking white death powder.

Quit being an ass.

If anybody is an ass now, it is certainly not me or maf. :):) but another person. Do you know who or shall I utter your name in public? :):)

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

You need to rope in some helpers!

Family helps out but only during summer, sometimes weekends. Now it is mainly work in the field or garden, but previously I engaged my sons to help me do some construction inside the house when it was being thoroughly renovated.

and many do not have access to water.

That is crucial, counting on precipitation to water your plants is like expecting to win the lottery. But in GB it is different.

My fascination was with raspberries and peas, I probably ate more than I was supposed to be picking!

Did you throw up like I did once as a kid after consuming a kilo or two of cherries straight from the trees? We were staying at a single room in a guesthose and I was walking to and fro and leaving indigested cherries behind me. Shocking view. :):) :)

As for losing crops, I already mentioned droughts - blamed for the death of two dozen new plants, small and big. Hares and rarely roe deer - another dozen of bigger saplings. Underground rodents like voles or mice - a few saplings and a lot of veg.

As for disease or insects, I don`t use chemicals, only natural means which I find on the internet, and if they don`t help, I just give up and see what happens next. I sow so many veg that even if half of them is rotten and devoured by pests, I still get the other half which usually suffices. :)

what pets do you have? you're talking about animals like chickens?

Once I wanted to introduce chickens there but last year I bought a rabbit and after seeing how much work she entailed, I gave up on all other farm birds. Apart from the rabbit, we take our urban home pets with us when we come for a longer stay - cats, mice, tortoise and turtle. The snake stays in the city. :)

Oh, now I remember you asked about feeding sunflower seeds to pets. So, our mice get them.

Life / Mishmash facts about Poland and Poles [187]

Interesting stuff.

Well, it may be explained in two ways - economic and sociological. Renting a flat on your own is still quite an expense in Poland while in Sweden not. Second - family ties are stronger in Poland than in Sweden. Polish youth don`t want to move out because they feel good living with parents, especially Polish mommies or sometimes even babcias.

Literacy rate in Poland - 99.8 percent.

The UK and US - 99 percent.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

Well maybe they do use egg and flour.

No, they use brine and then bread crumbs. Read how KFC chicken is prepared.

Guys, can you guess the name of the fish which I loved in my youth because it is so lean but today I prefer fatter fish? It doesn`t come from the Baltic, and Polish fishing ships started providing it in 1970s.
