Genealogy / Adopted from Poland; trying to find my biological parents [99]

the adoptive parents Carol & John Meisinger will not provide me any information on my adoption.

In that case, your quest is doomed to failure. However, when there is will, there`s a way too. If you have a lot of money, you can hire legal investigators who might try to find it for you.

Here`s an example:

But that will cost you many thousands $, including travels to Poland.

Life / Why Polish singers are not popular abroad? [95]

in the 80s Sandra and CC Catch Sabrina.

But you didn`t say we can also consider such old stars, I thought you meant contemporary ones. If so, there were many Polish singers who gained international popularity in communist times. E.g., how about Czesław Niemen ? He had a lot of gigs in the Eastern block. Do you remember him?

Travel / What is the ugliest city or town in Poland? [89]

from Poles in particular, that Krakow was a beautiful city, chiefly because of her touristic and historical interest.

Don`t believe everything what Poles say. Some might be yanking your chain. :):)

Life / Why Polish singers are not popular abroad? [95]

You've probably heard about Inna and Alexandra Stan.

No, I haven`t. Should I? :)

As for why there aren`t any Polish-based singers to make it big internationally, do you mean pop or opera or jazz or whatever? The question might be asked about other countries. E.g., Germany. I know a lot of German bands, especially heavy metal groups, but I can`t recall any famous German singer.

PS. I said jazz. There is Basia Trzetrzelewska who was quite known in pop jazz music circles in the USA when I stayed there.

Genealogy / What does my Polish name mean? [402]

The meaning? Hard to say. Closest association is with klik which comes from English click. So Klicks could be clicks, that`s all.

but middle aged so older than me.

You shouldn`t be so biased, age doesn` t matter.

Google shows many Polish Kliks. Do you want to see one? A male or a female? Young or old? Good looking or plain?

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

experts predict many students will be turned down by the schools they want to attend and will have to go to ones with free places

I wrote it on 18 March. No, I wasn`t a genius, the black scenario is getting real today. Thousands of students in big cities have been rejected by schools which they wanted to attend. Parents are desperate, too.

Will voters draw proper conclusions before the autumn elections ?

:) Low temperatures come both from Russia and Western Europe - I suppose there is a balance in nature.

News / PiS candidates are losing positions in EU Parliament. Will they keep power in Poland? [358]

Not only cash for votes. Those PiS guys are really popular in the countryside and small towns, especially in Eastern Poland, where people have access only to state TV controlled by PiS. If PiS decided to make a tree stump into a celebrity through an intensive campaign on their evening news each day, I can assure you that after a year or two some confirmed PiS supporters would worship that tree stump as a new deity. :):)

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

I wonder if those cottages are expensive for local Polish people? Can they afford them?

Well, certainly you can`t buy one with a one month salary. :)
I can`t tell you whether they are expensive or not because it is relative. One thing is certain - the older and more run down, the cheaper they are. And the further from the city, too. We bought ours for a certain price and then we had to invest the same amount to turn it into a comfortable place for the whole family. Originally, there was only one bedrooom, now 5. (Mind, I also count "the living room" as bedroom).

Far better to renovate, that way all the character of the cottage is preserved.

Yes, when I had the windows changed, I kept the pattern of the old ones. When I had the floor in the hall tiled, I had bought tiles which looked like the old PVC flooring. The colours of the hall are also like original. Only the new rooms are completely different. :)

It is about 50.

Now that can't have been Dougpol1 with his labrador because you said hello, plus you weren't on a beach ;)

No, it wasn`t Dougpol cause the man was young. When he first went by, I was doing sth behind a big bush so he didn`t see me. When he was coming back, I was on the drive and he greeted me. He sounded too joyful and assertive to be an accidental hiker, I guessed he was one of my neigbhours` son.

Yes, it is in the outback, if I want to meet a human, I have to walk a few hundred meters towards the village.

Sounds idyllic doesn't it, but for sure, there's a lot of work involved.

A lot of work but I like it. It allows me to stop those racing thougths about new riddles which are my obsession. hahaha. And I prefer it to going to the gym - at least I do sth useful in the fields and get reward from it. :)

Life / The climate for gardening in Poland [340]

Hey, yes, you were right, I just went to check and one flower had changed into a small fruit. They are so fast. :) I read a recipe for mizeria with zucchini instead of traditional cucumbers. I must try it out.

We plant zucchinis in the end of april in flower pots, then replant them when its warm at night.

I tried to to such tricks with different plants but our cats nibbled at seedlings and secondly, there is no direct sunlight through the windows because of loggias, so the plants grew long and weak and I realised it didn`t make sense apart from one species - tomatoes. This year I bought a few tomato seedlings at the open air market but two dozen are the ones from my window sill.

Do you know Physalis? In Poland it is also called Brazilian raisin. I had a few plants last year. Not so big and yellow as those from the supermarket, but still sweet.

News / PiS candidates are losing positions in EU Parliament. Will they keep power in Poland? [358]

It is funny how anti- European PiS party in Poland are crying they are not getting important positions in EU Parliament after recent elections. They are shocked because they won in Poland but are losing everything in Europe.

Last week professor Krasnodębski wasn`t elected a vice- President of EP.

- Members voting: 441/ Blank or void: 61/ Votes cast: 350/
Fabio Massimo Castaldo: 248 versus Zdzisław Krasnodębski: 85

Fabio Massimo Castaldo was elected Vice-President.

Today ex Prime Minister Szydło wasn`t elected a president of Parliament's Committee on Employment and Social Affairs.

Furious PiS guys are talking about a revenge of trecherous socialists and liberals. Of course, morons, did you expect anything else? :):) hahaha

PS. That is why I will never vote PiS. Voting for halfwits who abuse people and ideas and then expect a special treatment is against my principles. :):)

Food / What Polish foods and brands do you miss when you go to other countries? [216]

If you want fresh vegetables in Poland in winter... you either import or... do without.

There is one more option. Most veg can be stored in low temperatures, even for a few months.

Most leafy vegetables and 'temperate' fruit - including pome and citrus fruits - are not chill-sensitive and can be stored between 0°C and 2°C for long periods without significant loss of visual quality.

Now we can discuss - is it still fresh or not ? :):)

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

Does it all need renovating or just certain areas of it?

My brother in law always says when he comes for a visit that the cottage should be pulled down and sth modern built instead. :):) So, if we are as radical as him, then yes, the whole summer house needs a lot of renovation. But if we aren`t, then let it be like now: the house is fully habitable with enough room for 6 people, 5 bedrooms, two toilets, airconditioning, internet, hot water. I finished doing up the hall, the last thing which hadn`t been done since the purchase.

Apart from the rabbits, what else do you have?

All our home animals except the snake: the turtle, the tortoise, and mice. Cats are fed in the evening my my wife. Aah, and it isn`t rabbits but one she-rabbit.

It sounds like lots of hard work, but nice rewards; I would kill for all that lovely fruit and veg :)

Yes, it is lovely although it occured to me yesterday when I started picking and eating garlic that most of my veg is twice or thrice smaller than in the shops. I don`t use fertilisers except natural compost and mowed grass.

Also, I mentioned fava beans. About 10% had bugs in them. I don`t mind, a little meat is good for you. :):):) Better a small bug than the periodic table. :):):)

lovely

The loveliest thing is this isolation. Yesterday, after a few days, I saw a human - he went past our gate with a dog. We exchanged greetings.

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

Yes, run away.

Thanks, I can see that now, although I doubt I would have got it.

The narrator is asked: You have it on a tree stump with Tubka? And he answers: Yes, on a large oak tree stump.

To go hare in ones`s napper.

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

Does it just mean, 'Are you in good mental health?' A person isn't batsh1t crazy?

Yes, possible but the book offered also the meaning of clever, smart, learned. The narrator commented on some students in his class, saying they have healthy poppy seeds, contrary to the rest of the group who were halfwits.

Unless this is something to do with speeches, I have no idea. A teensy weensy clue perhaps?

One thread with torturous riddles is enough.:) This one is an instant answer riddle thread. It means to have a bone of contention with sb.

To give a leg.
