Law / Importing my American boyfriend to Poland: residency, marriage, work, etc. [16]

No sign of them being racist if they are. Just yesterday saw a chap of African appearance with his probably Polish blonde partner and their huge baby carriage (yes a big one) get off a bus in Krzyki - no one gave them a second glance. And I see lots of black and also Far East looking people around - I've never seen anything in reaction to it. All I saw here once was a swastika on a big estate's kiosk. I have subsequently discovered the area has anti social yob problems anyway. I saw more swastikas et al in Essex.

That said, I do recall someone once saying to me he here that he'd left London because he didn't feel comfortable living among black people as they worried him, but he didn't say anything vicious or use any bad words etc, it was more "scared of the unknown as never met people from that community" sort of vibe to it rather than racism.

Life / The "I am never wrong" phenom - is it the Polish thing? [63]

Its especially wierd when you come from England, here we blame ourselves for other peoples mistakes, the classic, some fool walks into you with their head down at their iphone and YOU say sorry to them....... :)

True. Here I notice people walk at others on the pavements/sidewalks, in the UK (at least where I frequented) people make room for each other and it's more "After you....no, after you..." sort of thing. Here it's a mad scramble for the pavement, the buses, etc. EXCEPT I see a lot of younger people here giving up their seat for elderly or infirm individuals on trams and sometimes on buses. Sometimes those elderly or infirm actually utter the word for thanks too, but not always of course. I also notice people here bang into me or hit me with their baggage as they walk past, and I'm yet to ever hear an apology. It was of course my fault for being there...

News / Let's protest censorship in Poland's mainstream media! [90]

I don't consider it a job, but an isolation from reality.

Sometimes I think that, and sometimes I wonder if that's what people are trying to get me to think. I really don't know. But at least I know that I don't know.

Food / The great British baked bean in Poland [26]

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baked_beans (if you've never heard of them)

Got a tin of Tesco's baked beans here, and was looking forward to it. But something's lacking in the sauce. Tested them on their own and on toast.

This means I'll have to try Heinz Fasola which I hope is the same recipe as in England. Of course, many Brits will tell you they prefer Crosse & Blackwell's baked beans to Heinz's. Or Branston's. Personally, Sainsbury's own label is fine for me, and might be repackaged Heinz's anyway.

Yes of course, with a nice range of Polish foods here in Poland, baked beans are not that important at all except for a rare treat (although in England they're considered a pauper's dish).

For anyone browsing and who's in Wroc, there's a shop at Magnolia Park retail mall which has quite a few UK brands and foods from all over. I think it is called World Foods. You can get quite a few things in there.

Law / Poland economy is slowing down - how does it affect you? [117]

People keep telling me that they're getting presented with papers and no skills - a consequence of the "education for all" policy.

Sounds like the UK, where many can't even do basic maths or spell everyday words (according to many employers).

Might be work for them as teachers in some small Polish towns, apparently.

Thanks CMS

FWIW in Wroc, I believe they are to massively expand the Bielany retail park here. The retail park is part of Wroclawskie but its catchment area is Wroclaw itself as its only on the boundary. New cinema, bigger Ikea etc.

Law / Poland economy is slowing down - how does it affect you? [117]

Thanks for posting that observation, would you be prepared to say whereabouts these jobs are, perhaps state the region if not the town?

I hear the same thing about jobs being scarce here in Wroclaw yet the shopping malls are really busy and everything seems quite "buzzing". Some of the entertainment venues have been doing cheap tickets to fill seats. They still had a disappointing response if my visit was anything to go by. Around the city, am seeing a fair few for sale signs on property. I think a bit more than before. The mall tenants might be doing more sales to encourage footfall, of course.

The English teaching ads here - you see posters at bus stops and ads on websites - hourly rate in one case is now 20. Just a few weeks ago I'd not seen lower than 30.

Life / Can no longer receive TVP Info Wrocław on digital DVBT [25]

Ale jaja!!!

Yes, I said it a few times as I stood angrily staring at the blank screen saying "No signal".

Or possibly my ale jaja was so loud and scary that the man who had unplugged the TVP transmitter so he could recharge his mobile phone woke up and plugged the TVP transmitter back in again.

Life / Can no longer receive TVP Info Wrocław on digital DVBT [25]

You'll have to go on wondering then won't you.

TVP Wroclaw and TVP Opole both gone, Wroclaw went when they changed the MUX, I assume Opole and Historia etc have now done the same. What I am left with is a list of channels when I do a scan but next to all of them, even Polsat, is the euro symbol, and if I select the channel the receiver says "scramble channel" (not scrambled but scramble, don't know if that makes any difference, ale jaja).

If anybody has any experience with this, please post.

If your only contribution to this thread is a wisecrack - please don't bother, although granted the bump may prove useful.

News / Fraudsters and common thieves top the crime league in Poland [12]

2011

36,700 thefts ended in convictions
28,400 economic crimes ended in convictions

However seems only 10% went to prison.

That seems quite a lot of fraud crimes. I'm surprised.

Food / Poland's best cheap beers? [72]

So far I have found it quite hard to go wrong with Polish beers that are in the lower price bracket, but if you buy the really cheap ones in cans although it seems their ingredients is pure with no chemicals in many examples, the taste is fairly bland usually. Nevertheless they are still good for a party where there's also food and people pay little attention to the quality of the beer they drink.

Love / Best, safe Polish dating sites? [95]

Now that I find myself single in Poland, wondering if there's a good internet dating site for my area for 30s singles. I have searched the forum and unless I have missed a link the sites don't seem to have many singles in my age group, certainly not in Wroc. Any tips to a good site or venue to meet someone genuine and not too young?

Work / Working in Poland without speaking Polish [75]

Tell you what though, I'd certainly tidy up for even 4000zl a month working 2 days a week! Heck, I'd get a cleaner!

Are you able to reveal what you do, and whether it's self-employment or work for someone else that you personallly knew beforehand? How do the language barriers get overcome - workmates never tire of translating you to others or others to you, etc etc? No need to deal with Poles who only speak Polish? How does it actually happen? Every employment agent I spoke with said that 99% of work requires me to speak Polish and the 1% who said otherwise have failed to deliver even one interview. And that's in a big, bad city like Wroc.

Edited to add - if I had a specialism it would be different where there are firms needing such skills where English is the office language. There are also a few call centres needing English if you can stand that sort of thing but I don't like that sort of work and in any case they weren't offered to me.

Work / Working in Poland without speaking Polish [75]

Do you get customers from that website? I'd be interested in knowing if you do. It charges for premium etc. Looking at the listing for this area, nativespeaker.com.pl/native-speaker-poland?voidvod%5B%5D=405&langs%5B%5D=1&agaes%5B%5D=7&avail=All&invoice=All&weekend=All

several have not logged in there for 10 weeks or 40 weeks in one case. So many customers they don't need to login to renew their sub or use the site at all to change ads or prices or email addresses??! Or maybe it's that they have made a couple o'million and retired?! Wow, I've been wasting my time poring over the job ads paying 25zl an hour.

So I can just join that site and soon I'll be on 8000zl a month, able to move to a decent flat away from the noise and pollution, and can shop with my head held high, instead of having to buy the thumbs up basic brands at Auchan! Eureka! It really is as easy as that when you work smarter and not harder ;o)

Work / Working in Poland without speaking Polish [75]

Do you have a registered company or are you evading tax?

In another thread, that poster has trouble with spelling and thinks the plural of life is lifes. The poster thinks brought means bought. Need I go on? How would that level of knowledge achieve 8000zl per month as a teacher of English? Shirley shum mishtake. I smell BS.

Look:-

My questions are around. what is the most important thing I need to do, once I'm in Poland? with regards to registering with the local authorities ect. and is CELTA or TESOL essential to teach in Poland?

Moving to Poland - what is the most important thing I need to do, once I'm in Poland?

Of course it can be done
...registered on a website as a native speaker

Sounds like BS to me. Which website? I have read of people who were unable to get work even asking just 30ph in Opole and Krakow.

Work / Working in Poland without speaking Polish [75]

Well, it's certainly a challenge unless somebody has some specialist skill that is in demand. For a typical office job or working in a shop, of course Phtoa is completely correct, unless that office or shop is managed by a friend or relative who puts you to work in such a way where your inability to communicate is a non issue.

News / Wrocław to increase police patrols on public transport [6]

Would the trams be patrolled by regular city police,or does Wroclaw have a type of transit authority?

AFAIK there are no public transport division police in Wroc - but someone else may know more on this subject.

In the UK, there's the British Transport Police or BTP and a division of 'City Guards'-alike uniformed support officers solely assigned to help BTP police constables police the railways, buses, subway trains etc.

Article says that they have been fining people for drinking on trams, smoking at bus stops, and similar. They are on the look out for aggressive passengers and those without a ticket who refuse to produce ID or co-operate with ticket inspectors. Patrols will become plain clothes aswell as in unform in the future.
