History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

what authority

You just cited Samuel P. Huntington in post #629:

Mr. Huntington clearly places Poland in the west, and he should know since he is the leading theorist of this very issue

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Haguecameron, you should understand that whether one places Poland in Eastern, or in Central, Europe is not a matter of logic or science, but an arbitrary decision. You cannot appeal to authority on this matter.

I think the expatriates are being a bunch of cads on this thread. They shame Britain and Ireland.

Life / Mishmash facts about Poland and Poles [142]

In 1573 Poland enacted complete freedom of religion and the seals of the szlachta on the parchment proclaiming this freedom make it look alot like the shaggy aegis of Athena, and this is appropriate because this freedom, like the goddess herself, sprung from the brain, while the rest of Europe remained mired in bloody religious strife sprung from the bowels.

one can deliberately make one such photo using a model

That photo was taken on the street. A model was not used. I tried to post another less close-up shot showing the street scene around her, but it was denied for some reason. I will try again with this post.

Denied again. I don't understand why.

Life / Racism in Poland - the future [441]

Le Roi Athelstan would do well to read Daniel Dafoe's poem "A True Born Englishman" and then try to explain how its verses, first published in 1701, are modern left-wing historical revisionism.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Pawain, why couldn't the Norwegians do that? The Germans called Austria "Austria", meaning "Eastern". There is no official definition for what is, or isn't, Eastern Europe and there never will be. This thread is pointless.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Truly Barney, distortion of land mass sizes on two dimensional maps are not always conspiracies. The Greenlander Inuit are hardly very influential with cartographers.
Natasa, you are right the Oriental's natural inlination towards suspicion is indeed warranted when thay deal with Westerners.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Europe is just a part of the Asian continent anyhow. Mountain ranges do not divide continents seas do. That anyone is angered by Poland being called Eastern European is just proof that the stigma attached to the East by the legacy of Orientalism still survives.

Life / Poland: worst teeth in the world? [98]

I have heard that frequent starving is thought to cause smaller stature in subsequent generations, but this makes sense from an evolutionary perspective, as smaller people require less food, perhaps bad teeth are an unfortunate side-effect of this phenomenon.

Genealogy / How common was Polish-Jewish intermarriage? [21]

Czesław Milosz's uncle Oscar Miłosz, a renown French Catholic poet, had a Jewish mother owing to his father having seen a pretty girl in a shop window's clothing advertisement and deciding on the spot to marry her. He went into the shop and demanded know who the model was and undeterred by her religion he followed through with his plan.

Having bad teeth because your ancestors didn't brush seems to smack of the discredited Lamarckian theory of acquired hereditary characteristics. How do scientists explain it?

Life / Babcia or Busha - any social class difference? [359]

Busia is a shortened form of the Polish word Babusia and a term of endearment. PWEI and Delphiandomine you're attacking a deceased lady and that is beyond despicable. You really are ugly people.

Life / Babcia or Busha - any social class difference? [359]

The word "Busia" is perfectly acceptable - as a shortening of a commonly used, diminutive old Polish form "Babusia"

This is the correct explanation of the term "Busia." I just spoke to my grandmother and asked her why we called her mother "Busia" and this is the explanation she gave me. Our Busia was from Wilno. She was not a Ukrainian.

Life / Babcia or Busha - any social class difference? [359]

Busha is mothers mother

This is how it was used in my family. My father's mother's mother was called Busha. I doubt the term is an exclusively American invention because she was from Poland, having come to America as a young adult.

History / What do Poles owe to Germans? [451]

Pawain, You should have titled the thread "For what are Poles ingratiated to Germans?" Just showing the altarpiece as an indication of this type of "owing" wrongly assumes that your reader would invariably see this example of religious art as a positive thing. Perhaps you are unaware of the popular colloquilalism "payback" that invokes a negative type of owing, one that causes the reader of this thread's title to think of revenge.

History / What do Poles owe to Germans? [451]

pawian: It is my thread and I set the rules.

This thread's title asks a question and the OP talks exclusively about a Cracovian altarpiece carved by a German. You came back to the thread some time later and said this thread should only mention positive German contributions to Poland. You should've at least clarified the limits of what was acceptable in this thread in the OP, or better yet had the titular question stipulate them. You instead opted to act like a petulant baby and insult people, but I suspect this whole thread is a ruse to allow you to do just that.

History / What do Poles owe to Germans? [451]

Pawain, if there is no debt implied in this thread's titular question, but only owing to the Germans for them having given Poland things which Poland wouldn't have had if it were not for the Germans, then why do you insist we only mention positive things? It seems to me that the list of negative things Poland owes to the Germans, such as mass graves and death camps, is far more extensive than the positive things Poles owe them.

History / What do Poles owe to Germans? [451]

This thread is not productive because it implies that Poles have a debt to Germans, which given the last several centuries of history is ridiculous. Pawain says this thread should be taken to mean only gratitude is owed, but isn't there a statute of limitatons on gratitude? I'm sure Boleslaw thanked the Germans for the replica of Longinus's lance . Do the Poles of today have to thank the Germans of today for it? Surely not.

There were many German crimes against Poland before the Nazis. What does the Holy Lance have to do with modern Poles?

Then I have been misinformed. I had read that the Germans when faced with the splendor of the polish grand prince's court insisted he become a king rather than a duke.

History / What do Poles owe to Germans? [451]

I have to do it in self defence before you send me to a gas chamber, like you did with millions of people before.

So Sokrates is responsiblefor gassing millions Pawain? What is the matter with you? You think Poles owe Germans for being made a vassal kingdom of the HRE? That is just plain wrong. The Germans owe the Poles for the latter's deigning to submit to vassalhood. As for the "holy spear" subsequent German crimes against Poles have long ago negated that debt.
