Life / Any good Polish films to watch? [112]

Now for something completely different....

I recently discovered this and have become mildly obsessed....

Zosia w szpitalu (1977) is aPRL mini-masterpiece.

Made by WFO (educational film studio) with the goal of reassuring children that going to/staying in the hospital isn't so scary after all.

First Zosia's parents introduce themselves then we follow Zosia as she's introduced to friendly hospital staff and other children and it ends with her asleep in her hospital bed while a friendly nurse tucks her in and goes to her night station.

What makes it stand out is just how.... modern it feels. Many compare it (in terms of framing and editing) to Wes Anderson.

The best part is a long tracking shot from Zosia's point of view across several examination rooms showing fragments of different family dramas and the last one with her parents.

I showed it to a friend who remembers the PRL and who works in medical administration and he said something like the film is very much needed now.

News / NATO expansion in northern Europe - great news for Poland [137]

just trolling you on twitter after a bottle of vodka and you take his gibberish as the gospel

No... he says crazy stuff to stay alive. A major internal worry of those at the top of the current russian system is that the West will support one. So Medvedev (as former president or prime minister or whatever the h3ll) has to make sure that his public image is that of an unstable character the West would never reach out to.

But the specific nature of the crazy things he says are absolutely in line with russian state media which also talks about such things. Posters saying "Alaska nasha" (Alaska is ours) might seem crazy to rational people but russians take it deadly seriously.....

Life / Poles speaking English - examples [263]

struggling with his English occassionally

What I've noticed is that natives and non-natives have different evaluations of second language speakers.... I notice that my evaluation of second Polish language speakers is often different from that of Poles (there's overall agreement but the details differ).

in the particular case of Polish second language english speakers Poles tend to place more value on speed and number of mistakes while natives tend to value intonation and overall naturalness of expression.

I have no intention of making a detailed comparison and I've barely heard Trzaskowski's or Skikorski's English but fleeting first impressions....

Trzaskowski: he is indeed faster and he completely ignores small errors (that is actually a good thing to do). He sounds a bit more like a star student in a language class. But there's something.... unnatural in his use (or non-use) of filler words.

Sikorski is slower but more... thoughtful and he uses filler words (a necessary part of all language communication) in a much more natural way and sounds like someone who's used the language for decades to do things (which require high levels of language proficiency) in the real world but no longer pays attention to certain language class diktats....

Both men represent the country very well in English.

News / NATO expansion in northern Europe - great news for Poland [137]

outsmarted, outplayed and outballed

no they just corrupted the republican party (at least michael johnson) at a critical juncture.... (and western europe has been mostly useless still hoping for rationality to win out)

just mangling Gorbachev's words

The one time that russians tell the truth is when they talk about their territorial ambitions and foolish rational westerners refuse to believe it because it's nuts....

News / NATO expansion in northern Europe - great news for Poland [137]

they regarded them as historically russian.

Who cares what those losers think?

Medvedev's definition of the russian world was Lisbon to Vladivostok.... russians are unhinged dangerous psychos.

deals never worked with Russia

And stupendous idiots talk about 'negotiated peace' when russia publicly says it would just use a peace deal to rearm and attack again....

Being friendly also didn't worked

Never be nice from a place of strength to a narcissist.... it just enrages them.

ussia is literally the 15 felony ...next door

russia is the 15 felony burglar next door who tries to make you feel guilty for installing an alarm

News / NATO expansion in northern Europe - great news for Poland [137]

I think that would be a massive mistake

He's making the classic mistake of assuming putain is a rational actor.... he's not. A rational actor wouldn't have started the war or would have taken an available off ramp a lot earlier.

He's a crazy ideologue who wants to take over most of Europe and most republicans are cowards who are fine with that.....

Life / Any good Polish films to watch? [112]

Is it a film or a tv thing?

netflix series....

What's special about it?

It's very funny.

OF course some people (who must have been given pickles as babies) were complaining about the historical accuracy but it's as much about modern Poland than anything that happened in the past.

No one wants to talk about 1670 (Office style mockumentary)?

Very funny...

News / Poland to officially demand $1.32 trillion WW2 reparations from Germany [457]

we would still have enough resources to occupy the Baltic states

Just can't leave other people alone.... what is wrong with russians that they are so needlessly violent and aggressive toward other people?

I know that during the Cold War russians/soviets hated the people in the Warsaw Pact countries because they knew they lived better than them despite the large scale theft of resources by the USSR (none of which went to make life better for everyday citizens).

Just be happy being a third rate power with a culture that most people want nothing to do with and a socio-political system that makes a dumpster fire look good in comparison.

Food / Polish dishes with foreign origin in the name [99]

"russian dumplings" (pierogi ruskie).

Actually that should be "ruthenian dumplings" (ruthenisch)

ruski for 'russian' is sort of rude... but it also means 'ruthenian' which is where they are from (and not russia at all).

Life / Climate change payments for replacement of coal boilers [26]

So we've got to start sometime.

Incrementally... not too fast (like Germany is trying, shutting down nuclear to try to scale up Germany's vast reserves of sunshine and wind.

Andrew Hammel has written on some of the addleheaded projects they've sunk vast amounts of money into with no discernible effect.....

And the problems are in the third world.... China, for example.

Life / Climate change payments for replacement of coal boilers [26]

the coal lobby has held back renewables

Is that bad? Renewables are decades away from being capable of use at scale..... they are just niche products around the margins yet some (Germany) want to throw away perfectly good technology chasing after them.

That said, pellets are better than coal and it sounds like PiS fkkkkery that they're not recognized (or glacially slow EU processes).

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

What context is peppery mostly used in???

The problem is figuring which 'peppery' you mean...

pieprzowy? then gaz pieprzowy (Pepper spray)

pieprzny? dirty, ribald (as in dirty story, dirty joke) which seems maybe related to pieprzony....

added: similar in English might be 'spicy' as jon mentioned in a previous post

History / Pol-Shorpy Photo Thread [950]

an excellent general insult

But it doesn't help. To change things it's necessary to understand what's going on...

This guy doesn't necessarily overtly connect what's going on with neoliberalism but he does have some good insights... (his specialization is the 'new elite' in the UK and how completely out of touch it is with reality)

Food / Polish dishes with foreign origin in the name [99]

the dish known in Poland as potato pancakes ala Hungarian doesn`t exist

I could have told you that....

How old is the Polish dish placki węgierskie?

I had assumed it was.... inspired by hortobagyi palacsinta (Hortobagy naleśniki) but I just read that's not old and only dates from 1958....
