History / "Poland Syndrome" should be renamed [45]

No, that was fake news, invented by sly Czechs after Polish invasions. I am really surprised you have fallen for it. hahaha

Of course, Polamp must stay in the language - it is a Polish company.

History / Cursed soldiers controvercy - not all Poles respect them [320]

What is the oath that every young Polish zuch, harcer, harcerka, etc. take? To put Poland's life ahead of their own.

Yes, exactly. That`s what most Poles will do in times of trouble. Like always in the past., I will go first and my students behind me.

But don`t expect average people to butcher innocent civilians solely because they are of another nationality. That`s pure murder and you do require a mentality of a murderer. I don`t want to be like that.

My patrotic motto has always been: Spirit of 44. Warsaw insurgents didn`t kill civilians - they killed German military who invaded Warsaw and occupied it in the most brutal way. That`s the way to fight for Poland.

Yes, but I don`t want karma to return to the person who rips me off.

Why shouldn`t we revel when we see that karma has struck our wrongdoers? Coz it always goes with the trymph of fulfilled vengence. It doesn`t matter that we didn`t take revenge personally but were replaced my mythical karma. We relish our wrongdoer`s misfortune and that is really a negative feeling.

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

I am thinking of potatoes, too, .

So, today it was an exciting day coz we dug up our first own potatoes. I had planted Arizona variety. My wife boiled them for kids while I fried them with sausage and eggs. Wow, delicious. No chemicals or artificial fertilizers were used.

The only problem is Colorado beetle. I go around the field a few times a day and collect dozens of them every day. They fly in from neighbouring fields.

I never have no, the grass grows around them so I never got green potatoes .

I did an experiment and planted some spuds in the grassy and weedy area. Now I see it has failed - the bushes grew twice smaller than in other weedless patches and now they are practically dead coz it has been dry for about two weeks. I haven`t dug them up yet. Tomorrow I am going to see what hides under those weeds there.

Yes, but I don`t want karma to return to the person who rips me off. I prefer to stop the act when I can and avoid further consequences, for them and me.

Polar bears too.

I would let them stay polar. They are already seriously endangered and the prospects are grim - they will have gotten extinct by 2100.

Don't forget the police either; they are named after a Polish town.

Ha! hahaha

I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it.

But some people can`t bear the thought of being ripped off. E..g, me. When I feel they are exploiting me, I raise hell although I tend to be calm and complacent in everyday life situations.

I agree to British points only if they were discovered by Brits. hahaha

Btw, sb will have to look through literature and eradicate all obsolete mentions of Poles. Milne and his imbecile sock puppet bear go first.

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

Exactly, though good times and bad times.

In Polish it is thin and fatty years.

On siedzi na płocie

Now it is sth I need to make sure if it the same as Polish: to sit astride on a barricade. Yes, it is - keep neutrality.

And that should be changed too. Especially that there is a better word: Enamel. So beautiful. It reminds me of Emanuel, an important first name in the Bible.

The message is that Polish men and even women weren't going to take it laying down

Of course. After the news of the Slaughter spread in the area, Poles started organising self defence units in villages, often together with Jews, sometimes aided by the AK or communist underground, sometimes only villagers. I could gladly join such a unit and blow a few attackers` heads off and then God would have a problem deciding if it was my sin or not.

But going to another village to burn it down and kill its inhabitants whom you have never seen in your life and who haven`t done anything wrong to you requires a character of a murderous psychopath.

Admit you have such a character. As I said, I don`t mind. But I don`t want to be like you. Can I ?

Coz sb told you that bills were piling up, suggesting you do sth about it?

Somehow I forgot about it. But I think there is another name for that, I seldom see polish on those little bottles.

Perfect Storm is the title of the film I didn`t watch coz I consider such marine adventures a little boring if they last 2 hours. The only Perfect Storm which was short and exciting is in Forest Gump film . I always loved how Forest`s first mate, Dan, screams at the sky: You call this a storm??? It is time for a showdown - you and me! Come and get me! hahahaha Reminds me of Polish Romantic heroes who were also at odds with God.

Btw, Polish translation is better: The Wrath of the Ocean.

Retaliation and vengeance - we didn't start the ****, but we'll sure as hell react and take action

And kill mostly innocent people.

Now you are talking like a member of an execution squad. Let it be. While I was talking as a Christian. Why don`t you let me be one???

if it's going to make them stop killing Poles and others.

No, it didn`t stop Ukrainians. Even worse, decent Ukrainians who didn`t want to participate in the slaughter at the beginning, sooner or later joined in after their village had been burnt down and families killed in Polish retaliation.

Absolutely not and I thought you'd be smart enough to see that.

My smartness, based on Christian beliefs, tells me that vengence doesn`t solve anything, it only provokes other vengeful acts.

Ha! I remember using that idiom in an explanatory letter to my most important girlfriend decades ago. I wrote about our huge problems and chose to use English to sound less strict.

bark up the wrong tree. Right after it I wrote: to be in a relationship with you requires me to have a skin like a rhinocerous but I certainly don`t possess it. I was 20 years old but I still remember it. I am so sentimental. Weep, weep. Sorry..

History / Heritage of partitions still present in Poland [107]

@pawian, this map is oversimplified.

Yes, exactly. I only started to show the maps, coz there are many depending on different approach. I was waiting for an intelligent poster to comment and add new ones. It is you so thank you very much.

Old age? Apart from that I have no idea......

Nope. Two guys, rather elderly, were talking about possible tragic ends, one of them was a stroke whichcan stiffen you. I hope you like this typically British black humour.

be on cloud nine - in Polish way say to be in 7th heaven.

What is the next one?

Genealogy / Popular non-Poles of Polish descent [17]

Apparently John Bon Jovi had a maternal grandfather of Polish descent.

What?? Even Jon Bon Jovi was Polish? Unbelievable. If you tell me John Paul II and Columbus were Polish too, I will admit I am the last, miraculously saved King of Polish Apes.

Next, when I see boxes/packets with shoe polish, I also feel disgusted.

Fortunately, some producers decorate the boxes with animal images: kangaroo, kiwi bird, cat, bufallo, eagle, horse, rhino, dog, penguin, griffin. Then I am completely disarmed and withdraw my objections.

Hey, we can sum up the latest elections with a little historical insight .

So, I would like to notify you that the partitions heritage still works fine in Poland.

See the maps with previous election results in the first post:

The newest map for 2020 below. We can say that the former Russian partition zone gave the victory to President Duda. The Prussian zone fought hard but was overwhelmed. After all, Russians always outnumbered their enemies in all wars. hahaha

That is all regimes` character. If we weren`t in the EU, PiS would certainly resort to Putin or Lukashenka-style methods.

Seriously? Wow! Very popular in my family

Well, it means Poland is such a big country that, living in one part, I haven`t had a chance to get to know some phrases from other parts. :)

the English is to keep your cards close to your chest with no mention of medals there..

Yes, those medals are quite unnecessary here. It is obvious they are on one`s chest but still they complicate the message.

I just read another title with this:
soda rushes into sb`s head.
