Life / Polish film and serial riddles [137]

President`s Visit from 1961

Yes, Odwiedziny Prezydenta

As I mentioned the whole thing is on youtube but it is a bit of a downer - no happy end..... but worth watching nonetheless.

There is more than one father?

...yes and no.....

Interestingly the whole film is up on youtube and it's worth a watch (though it is a downer).

if you want to fish around on youtube the movie is from somewhere between 1959-1964....

Life / Paintings of artists from Poland? [192]

both intelligent and dumb graffiti :

Sometimes cities sort of informally designate places for larger scale more ambitious street art.... my us college town had something like that and where I live now does too. in both cases these are cement blocks next to a busy road. Some of it is dumb and derivative but some is pretty okay and I have no problem with that. I intensely dislike idiots that scrawl stuff on buildings that people live in...

Graffiti originated in the US -

Ancient Rome was full of graffiti.... so it's nothing new.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_graffiti

There are types of graffiti (gang signs, tags) that were popularized in the US and then exported (unfortunately) most of it is completely devoid of any aesthetic value.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 3 [818]

foreigners are not so enthusiastic

In my experience non-Polish people might be put off by the look (it can be quite ugly) but if they taste it they usually like it. I've liked most of the bigos I've had but one time I couldn't finish it... it was at a club meeting and it tasted.... not off, I think it was supposed to be that way but I just really didn't like it. I'm too lazy to mix sauerkraut and fresh cabbage equally so I usually just stew sauerkraut with meat and spices (and dried mushrooms and dried plums).

Food / Polish cakes made in Poland [115]

never before have I heard this word for a cake

Fritters are closer to racuchy than to cake.

There are however both sweet (like apple) or savory (onion) or in-between (corn)

I watched it in 1979 and never again coz it is a sad depressing movie

I saw it onced on TV and had a similar reaction.... very sad, especially the ending....

Interestingly (maybe) a friend of mine briefly rented an apartment that had been owned by one of the cast members (though known more for other things). The cast member had died a few years earlier and there was a complicated legal situation so the person who inherited it hadn't cleaned most of the actor's personal effects out of it.

ou are saying important things but I won`t comment on them

Feel free to comment on them elsewhere or to start a thread....

"Poless" exists in the Oxford dictionary

oed.com/dictionary/poless_n?tl=true&tab=factsheet

But it fell out of whatever usage it had by 1930

Problems for English speakers:

Stress.... where is it? Oxford gives three possible pronunciations (2 British 1 American) and none sound right... stressing -ess just sounds dumb and the unstressed pronunciation makes the word sound kind of ugly.

It's not listed at all in American Heritage (the best dictionary of American usage).

On the other hand the suffix -ess is listed and the dictionary says (among other things):

"the feminine suffix -ess is sometimes considered sexist and demeaning because it gratuitously calls attention to gender"

"the feminine form may be taken to imply that the task somehow differs when performed by a woman, or that it is by default the realm of men.

"A few specialized examples persist in fields in which the sex of the referent is relevant, sometimes for historical reasons, including chiefess in anthropology, goddess in history and literature, and lioness in biology. Other cases, like webmistress, represent arch reclaimings of the -ess suffix, but these are whimsical or ironic exceptions"

Interestingly there's no mention of using -ess with nouns referring to ethnicity and the only two examples I could think of, namely Jewess and Negress are listed as "offensive"

Poless is a non-starter and doesn't add anything that Pole or Polish woman (the trend in English is to dispense with nouns referring to ethnicities in favor of adjectives, sometimes before people, woman or man.

"Penelope Cruz is Spanish." or "Penelope Cruz is a Spanish woman." sound much better than "Penelope Cruz is a Spaniard." or god help us all "Penelope Cruz is a Spaniardess."

(yes Spaniardess is also listed in Oxfored - it sounds dreadful).

Food / Polish Pizza !! The best in the world? [330]

Ketchup in general.

I don't mind ketchup (I'm American --- my stomache is lined with stainless steel and has battery acid to help digest things) but it has its place and that place is not on pizza....

The key to great pizza is not the toppings but the crust. The best pizza I've ever had was in Lanzarote - hotel restaurant had a pizza chef who turned out small pizzas with minimal (but very good quality) toppings but amazingly delicious crusts.

A place where I went to college (the one with broccoli slices) was the only good deep dish pizza I've ever had.

Let's look at authentic Italian practice... minimal toppings and curated crust....

Life / Neoliberalism and family formation in Poland [100]

There's an awful lot of stereotypes in there and pretty massive generalisations.

Thank you! Thank you! (takes a bow)

That's how that's intended... generalizations based on observations.

Women, on the whole (do I have to slip in 18 qualifiers each and every time?) find verbal confrontation emotionally fulfilling and assume that a confrontational attitude makes them irresistible to men (it doesn't).

Men on the whole think that displaying chivalry makes them attractive to women (it doesn't) this is a time delayed response, a guy who white knights a lot is doing things that might impress a young woman's parents (important when they controlled the v@gina strings) but don't do anything for women who can make their own choices.

The idea of women being assertive and not actually needing their BS

Such a woman reminds a (straight) man of other men which is a turn off... Gay guys, who interact with each other in a different way, might find it amusing (though they wont' take such a woman seriously) like I said women try to act out what they want in a partner and are then surprised it doesn't work....

Life / Neoliberalism and family formation in Poland [100]

priorities are different

There's a tendency for both men and women to stress qualities that they're looking for in a mate that the other sex doesn't much care about when choosing a mate....

men: stress dependability and loyalty and respectfulness

women: stress independence, self-sufficiency and career achievements

Instead, men should stress their career, independence and have a slight zfg attitude and women should stress their dependability and loyalty and general agreeableness. Or don't.... and find out the hard way....

Men love their women. Women use their men.

Better put: Men love idealistically, women love opportunistically.... or men tend to treat relationships like money (ultimate goal, valuable in an of itself) and women tend to treat relationships like jobs (a means to an end).

Life / Neoliberalism and family formation in Poland [100]

Actually all the women in my family worked and 99% have kids

Yeah. Working getting in the way of starting a family for women began sometime in the late 90s I believe.... before that even in martial law there was a baby boom (lots of jokes about the causes for that)

Life / Neoliberalism and family formation in Poland [100]

women now outnumber men in college in almost all rich nations

Given that most women most of the time want a partner who has a higher social position than she does.... not good for marriage rates.

Plenty of women who work in Poland have kids

Most women in Poland have worked since at least the end of WWII... and not because they had dreams of a high flying career....

I remember when young women really wanted kids but were afraid - since a pregnancy or child was a quick ticket to the unemployment line... that is a clear example of neoliberalism making family formation needlessly difficult.

I remember when most fifth year female students (when the magister was the first degree) were married or engaged by their senior year and now... none of them are and they're stressed about finding a place to live since no government does much about affordable housing for young adults..... another example of making family formation difficult

Life / Neoliberalism and family formation in Poland [100]

Fertility has plummeted across a big part of the world and in some countries young people seem to be withdrawing from the dating/marriage market altogether.

This has most advanced in the US but some of the phenomena that foreshadowed current events in the US can be found in Poland as well....

So I started this thread to continue discussion on fertility, family formation, neoliberalism and other causes from the thread about the russian invasion of Ukraine.

Perhaps a mod might like to move those posts here....

Genealogy / Anyone from Berezka / Brzuska near the Ukrainian border ? [53]

the locals have no historic connection with the area and don't have any stories to share

I thought that was less the case in Eastern Poland.... in western poland yeah but I thought the East was less affected by the compulsory mass migrations that took place after WWII...

Also unless carriesc01 speaks Polish she's liable to not get much informaiton, even if she can find local people who know some English villages in a lot of Poland are still farming communities and people are busy and don't have a lot of time to answer foreigners' questions....

Food / Replace meat with bugs - new trend in Poland [29]

The western elite push for the proles to start muching in bugs has not been met with enthusiasm (to put it mildly) and I don't predict any more success in Poland.

I will not live in a pod, I will not eat the bugs.
