What did you think of Ghosts?

I enjoy the American version I've only seen bits and pieces of the British original on youtube... which also looks very enjoyable (in a different way).

I've seen bits and pieces of Mandy on youtube, looks fun (sort of in the Vicky Pollard tradition?) I love Diane Morgan as Cunk and even if the real life experts are in on the joke they're also brilliant.

Weirdly British humor (I love a lot of it and just don't understand a lot of it) doesn't seem to really resonate in Poland past Monty Python (okay though uneven) and Allo Allo (which I could never stand).

"rigid class system

Yeah, as you write 'rigid' doesn't belong there. But there is a class consciousness? awareness? that just isn't found in the US.

I was watching a comparison of the original BBC "Ghosts" and the American version - and one of the things mentioned were lots of certain class markers and a general acknowledgement of class that's entirely missing in the American version... I enjoy the American version though I haven't been able to access the original so it's hard to say (the historic range of the original is also a lot larger than the US version).

There's also some idea of class solidarity (not much of a thing in America for the last several decades) and class pride (for lack of a better word). And also there seems to be an idea of everybody disliking the middle class (I don't know how serious that is but anytime the words are evoked in British media the air seems to curdle a little.

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

Though more often nowadays it's just called gryps.

I first heard it called 'gryps' (in a very non-Warsaw part of Poland) long before I knew the name 'grypsera'.... so that's not new at all.

One online dictionary gives 'złodziej strychowy' for 'pająk' though I'm not sure what that is... maybe a cat burglar?

There was an early 90s movie with a gymnast who became a cat burglar (for a good cause) called 'pajęczarki' so....

Food / Poles have a more loving attitude to food than here in the UK [169]

deeply strange as a person

I happened to discover her Christmas video series from 1975 on youtube last Christmas and quickly became obsessed.....

Mincemeat omelette sounds pretty damn good though

It's very... odd in execution. She makes an infernal racket with the eggs in the frying pan and then closes them over the mincemeat so that they're still only half cooked (not that unusual for the time but very odd now).

Some point out that it wasn't that different from a 'jam omelette' which was popular at the time but... tastes change and it seems deeply weird now.

I like some of the mincemeat ideas she has but the omelette.... not so.... convinced...

The omelette starts around 7:25

Food / Polish cakes made in Poland [115]

fritters are basically stuff dipped in batter similar to the batter you make for Naleśniki

Alternately you cut the apples (or whatever) up and mix them into the batter and then make little... plackies in the frying pan.

The big difference between scones and biscuits is that scones are denser and drier. I'm not sure how long scones be kept before eating but biscuits are meant to be eaten right away and they don't keep well.

Also the buttermilk you use for biscuits is not like maślanka.... where I grew up buttermilk was noticeably thicker and creamier than regular milk and had a slightly yellow tinge (that may well have been food coloring as is used for margarine). Maślanka is a lot thinner.... though it can be nice on its own (unlike butterrmilk which I never liked by itself only as an ingredient in cooking other things).

Of course they are known and popular here.

Then what are they called? A Polish teacher (phd in English) who'd been in the states and knew American biscuits had no idea how to translate the concept into Polish beyond 'krakersy' but biscuits are soft and flaky inside.

They are a bit similar to British scones but biscuits are softer and... flakier....

Cookies, those look like cookies....

Here is a biscuit, nothing like them in Polish cuisine... Hungarian pogacsa are similar.

US's only legitimate red line was its border in 1962 off the coast of Florida

history, idiot, learn it..... cold war "we will bury you".... and the US was a superpower in a completely different league from the third rate dirt empire of russia....

the US was and is simply superior to cccp/ russia in every possible way.

different rules for class A superpowers and class C (at best) wannabe superpowers...

S had its red line during the Cuban crisis. Russia is entitled to have its own.

russia's only legitimate red line is its 2013 borders.

if russia stays in its own lane then it will be fine.

No part of the soviet union that wasn't russia in 2013 is russia's business....

Dutch and Austrians taking it too seriously and missing the irony.

I don't think the Dutch took things too seriously this year....

Could be fun if it's staged well....

The few I've heard just sound dire.

Are you what they call a "misery guts"?

Eurovision isn't about 'good music' for those with conventional good taste.... it's supposed to be entertaining and tacky and over the top and I can't help but feel that anyone who can't get into the spirit of the thing is a hopeless misanthrope....

It's called... f u n.... look it up.

in proper English. two -the guitar!

Actually I wouldn't use the article...

A: How are things goin'?
B: Guitar. (okay, can't complain)

I was told a few years ago about students using 'kot' in a similar way but expressing stronger approval. But I haven't actually heard it....

A: How was the concert?
B: Kot! (great!)

The world's population is however skyrocketing

Africa has apparently peaked and total fertility is starting to fall (though demographic momentum means the population will increase for a while)

China's population peaked around 10 years ago

Not sure about India...

None of that depends on gender or sexuality though, does it...

gender doesn't really exist... sex exists and it takes one male and one female for humans to reproduce.... so it does depend on sex while those attracted to their own sex (a normal enough occurence) are not fertile on their own....
