Work / The level of English of Polish teachers of English. What do you think of it? [101]

This expression: "a sense of false importance", characterizes so well so many teachers of English

....and is poor English in itself....." a false sense of importance" would be correct :)

lovelybride, you shouldn't have wasted your time, you must know your English is excellent

Yes,but clearly not "native", this is where the problem lies. They never get the subtle cadence right and there is always at least one missing "the" . ;)

Polish teachers or even just Poles who speak a good level of English and have a bit of paper to prove it just will not listen to native speakers,in fact, will point blank tell you that you are wrong, thats what galls,to be told, for example that,"no,there is a W in sword so it must be pronounced" is kinda funny, but also, kinda annoying. :)

History / Polish conscripts to German army [132]

I dont think any Polish WW2 veterens come on here TBH but you may well find a veterens assosiation or 3 in Canada, and there is one for sure across the border in Chicago , you can be sure that you will find people happy to talk with you.

History / Polish conscripts to German army [132]

He did say that he was in a Russian pow camp and thay had one piece of bread per day.

Thats one more piece of bread a day than the germans gave to Russian POWs :(

Funny that, around here Poles worked alongside locals in many trades, infact,on one side of Doncaster most of the GPs (Doctors) were ex Polish Airborne medics :)

built for American GI's but had been condemed as unfit for the Americans to live in. The Poles lived in this camp until around 1970 when municipal housing replaced the army shacks.

Erm,not to pick on you, but, please dont give the impression Poles were somehow forced to live in these camps. They could choose to stay there till 1970 but most, like your father, managed to move on quite freely.

It does bug me that so many people seem to focus on the negative when England had no obligation to allow any Pole to stay, anymore than persons of any other Allied nation.

DP (displaced person)

yeah, sorry, I forget sometimes which site Im replying on and forget not everyone has a working knowladge of 1940s acronyms ;)

I know from a particular book that some surely did fight after joining the Polish army in Italy

Yes, of course you are right, many did fight for the Allies as well as the Germans. One old boy I used to know here in England had started his war in the Polish Army then found himself in the German Army followed by the Russian Army than finally with Anders untill he transfered to the Airborne brigade ! :)

erm, actually, thinking about it, did I know your Dad? :) ( If he lived in Donny, and was called "Tom"....)
PS, France and Holland would hint at 2nd Armoured Division maybe?

Like I said before, any specifics, any unit names or numbers you can give will help, alternatly try the Sikorski institute in London, will take an age but they should be able to help you ,all the best with your search .

Life / Do Polish people have a good ear for music? [90]

SHOULD be on their way to the top but I'm afraid that as it's Poland it won't happen.

Lets face it, the ear bleeding arse we have to listen to in the UK on "Pop" radio (god im getting old) is hardly the best of British is it? You just have to look around I suppose, but,to be fair, the only non traditional songs I knew in Poland tended to be by Moldovans(Moldovians?).

She used to be famous for driving a pink jaguar around Warsaw in the seventies, earned from performing in Las Vegas.

Lols, Im begining to like her, good girl :)

History / Polish conscripts to German army [132]

I guess it was more then 10 000 people

Including those found in NW Europe these "turn coats" ( not that most had a choice) who never actually served AGAINST the germans but were put on Polish army pay roles in order to keep them from being DPs who would have been forced back to Poland ,made up the vast majority of the so called fourth largest allied army.

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

And those sausages..............yuck........maybe close to blasphamy but they really are the most vile and rubbery sausages in Europe (discounting School dinner sausages).
Mind,an old Butcher once told me that the only food Butchers will never eat is sausages :)

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

I really cannot believe that anyone would leave Britain and crave these utterly loathsome and revolting foodstuffs.

I really cannot believe that anyone would leave Poland and demand a dozen Polski Skleps in every town in Britain to buy 3 day old bread ,gherkins and lumps of fat.....

History / Polish conscripts to German army [132]

If you are looking for more than just a vague answer to your question Im afraid we will need more details.
Do you know which branch of the german forces he served in? What Division/regiment?
Where abouts in Italy did he find himself captured by the British? When?

If you dont have the specifics some books can give you an idea, for instance Anthony Beevors " Stalingrad" will give a flavour of what it was like to serve in Russia with the German Army.

Life / If I'm agnostic, deist, atheist - can I say that to Polish people in Poland? [72]

And wars also same. I support women.

Matey, when I was seven my country went to war,our head of state was a woman named liz and our prime minister was a woman named maggie............hundreds died, fact.

I live in a post imperial country who's largest period of expansion happened under the control of a woman, called vicky, a few hundred years earlier a bird named liz 1 had been in charge during a period of mass burnings of catholics oh and a little thing like defeating the last ever papal crusade in 1588 with "the body of a weak and feeble woman....".

While I dont entirely agree with natasa's post post pre post feminist stand ( ;) ) I will say that who ever seeks out political power has more in common with others of the same nature than just the contents of their underpants.....what I mean is that male or female those who seek power are essentially the same.

Seems a bit of a "sad" topic for a thread,(as in, oh dear....here we go again...) but scanning through and seeing Martha Stewerts name along side serial killers and peado's did make me chuckle :)

unless you graduate from the English Language department at a Polish/British/American university, you have no chance to learn to speak perfect language.

Tommy rot!!!
Besides, is it not better that Polish Politicians concentrate their efforts on Polish matters and not learning another language.
After all,as people have said, thats why they have translators, experts who wont, hopefully, missunderestimate the submarines of the speach?

Life / What is Poland's fastest growing ethnic group? [57]

Its them bloody normans i blame for everything. Yesterday was a Black day in the history of these isles, October the 14th 1066 the Anglo dannish army of Harold Godwinson fought a day long battle on,erm, battle hill.....erm, against the mercenary forces of Duke Wiliam the bastard who under a Papal banner invaded these islands and then, ironicaly for some one under Romes protection, went on to spawn generations of invaders of Ireland......

(yes, that could have gone in the other thread, but Im sort of stream of conciousness tonight ;) )
Like Britain Poland can pretend to its hearts content that its native ethnic mix is some simple to define affair, with one main big one and one or two nice native minorities..........utter tosh, if Poland was the Devils playground with armies criss crossing it through out history britain was the bit at the end of the world every bugger ended up in at some point or another and plenty of "mingling" with the natives went on whether welcome or not ;)

In the UK the Anglo-Saxon/Celtics are dwindling

I hadnt noticed I was dwindling TBH :)

Blond hair and blue eyes originates from Northern Europe why is it Nazi ideology to view that eye and hair color as the dominate types in the country?

google Lebensborn or wiki.. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lebensborn wasnt calling *you* a Nazi, but the last bunch who went to Poland looking for Blonde haired Blue Eyed types were.....FYI, those are not Slavic traits, Poland is a Slavic nation.

If you know anything about Hitler

Erm, read a bit, come back, then start with the politics :)
There is far more to Poland than Politics and a five year spot in the mid 20th century :)

are they under control, or are they rebellious?

In The Southern United States, it is custom

...to hang non whites from the nearest tree or lamp post...............

When I come to The Land of the Pole I hope I see an ocean of blond hair and blue eyes.

No, in case the news is taking time to filter across the Atlantic; The Nazis lost.......

Fek, the banjo players are out in force today...............
