News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

A life in various institutions....with lots of pain and suffering.

It's been brought up repeatedly in Polish debate that the pro-lifers are remarkably unwilling to contribute financially to such institutions.

News / If Russia liberate Scotland, what would happen with Polish workers in Britain? [59]

I suppose the general lack of nationalism among the population as a whole have something to do with that

Yes, I think it's widely accepted among SNP supporters these days that the name of the party is an unfortunate historical coincidence - they want political independence, but without any of the nastiness found elsewhere. I know a couple of English people who voted for independence, simply because of the huge efforts made by the SNP to act as an inclusive party regardless of ethnicity or nationality. Of course, there's a few bad eggs on both sides, but they get condemned and dealt with quickly. I suppose the British concept of civic nationalism is pretty much unheard of in mainland Europe outside of a few examples like the Flemish parties.

A friend of mine learnt some Polish to be able to explain the benefits of independence to Polish voters, and he said that one issue was the Polish name of the party - Polish voters that were uneducated about Scottish politics thought that they were like the BNP and other clowns.

So, to answer the original question, in the event of Russia 'liberating' Scotland, Polish workers would likely find themselves in deep trouble. Russian nationalism is completely incompatible with what the Poles are used to in the UK.

One contrast between the civilised bits of Europe and Serbia - Scotland held a legal referendum, with free and fair elections and a very high turnout, with the wording of the ballot agreed by the SNP.

Yup, absolutely no arguing here about the referendum. Polling stations stayed open until the last person voted, unlike in Bosnia when Serbs in some localities physically prevented locals from voting in the Bosnian independence referendum.

A shame (and yes, I do mean shame) that Serbia did this in Bosnia.

In fairness Jon, I understand partially why they acted in that way. They suffered terribly in WW2 at the hands of Croats and some Muslims, and many of them were driven by absolute fear that the same would happen again - because the Serbian TV was pumping out non-stop propaganda in the worst possible way. But of course, many of them were just common thugs, especially in the occupied suburbs of Sarajevo and others that came from Serbia proper.

Scotland voted to remain in the UK.

Much to my displeasure.

But it was a fair vote, and one that could easily have gone the other way had the Yes campaign convinced elderly voters that their pensions were secure. The interesting thing is that if Scotland had voted Yes, the Leave EU campaign would have had a decisive victory.

polls show that the result if one were held now would be even stronger in favour of remaining in the UK..

It's an interesting time right now, because one thing that's become clear is that some Yes voters were voting that way to leave the EU, while previous No voters are now considering voting Yes to remain in the EU.

in screechy feminized countries

One can only wonder why you willingly chose to live in one of the most feminine countries in the world in that case.

Still, your lack of experience with women is quite clear.

92% support EU membership in Poland.

Trump presidency forms a nice and much expected counterbalance

I'm honestly surprised that you trust a word the Americans say.

Life / Are Polish roads really this bad? [237]

Where do I pay?

At the toll gates, you'll find them just after the S1 junction with the A4 and just before the junction for Kraków Airport, also on the A4.

Gasoline is easy, there will be plenty of places along the way, all well signposted.

Cash. It isn't very much

It was 20zł between Katowice-Kraków last time I went - 10zł each at the toll gates in Mysłowice and Balice.

Nice motorway actually at that point, but the Kraków bypass was a mess.

Law / Polish Citizenship by Descent Question - Polish Citizenship Acts [36]

Pan Kaczynski:

Your lack of knowledge of Poland shows when calling him "Pan", a title not used in Poland towards him.

Incidentally, the Polish government has just correctly tightened up the rules on the issuing of the Karta Polaka, ensuring that a genuine connection with Poland is now required to obtain it. It's no longer enough to pretend to have some connection to a Polonia organisation.

One can only assume that the present Polish government has no interest in handing out Polish citizenship to people of unclear origin.

USA, Canada / What I don't get about Americans vs Polish [39]

Poor snowflakes, still melting down over that devastating loss in Alabama. If the same thing repeats itself in the 2018 elections, the USA will be a sea of blue. Even Trump couldn't save the Republicans in Alabama, and his ideology has clearly been rejected by even Southern voters.

Genealogy / What does my Polish name mean? [401]

Polonius, while I'm aware of the mess that they made on Ellis Island of surnames, what about the American tendency to completely mispronounce names that are still in their original form?

I've heard "Marchewka" as "Mar-chew-ka" for instance, among other travesties.

Were not libturds

Well, you're certainly not helping your case. Calling voters names because they didn't want to elect a failed judge and child abuser, well, doesn't that say it all about the sour grapes?

The election is over

That it is, and the loser Republicans still can't get over the swing in Alabama. It's going to be fun watching the Republican mass failure in 2018!

Genealogy / Americans of Polish descent. How many of us are on Polish forums? [216]

Pope Francis IS respected by a lot of Poles.

Indeed, what really annoyed and angered a lot of moderate Catholics in Poland was the way that Francis was saying one thing and then the Church was trying to spin it in a different light. But look on the refugees issue - even the Church here itself has been calling to accept them, yet they're completely ignored by the holier-than-thou types.

Most of the actual Catholics have mixed feelings about him. Definitely he is respected less than the previous Popes.

The only ones that respect him less are the ones who read Fronda and such like, because they know better than the Pope, obviously. A lot of moderates respect him far more than Benedict.

it was a major own goal

A massive own goal. A religion teacher friend of mine told me that in many schools, the classes cease to have any relevance for kids after the First Communion, and that many religion teachers are simply incapable of controlling classes. She gave examples of teachers trying to threaten 15 year olds with the devil - with the predictable result that kids just laugh in their faces and all authority is lost.

It's clear that the Church just wanted the massive subsidies from providing those classes, nothing more. If it was about religion, then it would have carried on in the same way as before - in churches.

USA, Canada / Poles and Americans, what do you think, are we friends or enemies? [187]

Yes, pretty much. I have no idea why he's attacking you for telling the truth about how you lose contact, but he's got a long history of doing just that.

Still, nice to see a Canadian telling a real Polish person what is and what isn't Polish.

Like in much of Spain and Ireland these days, it's more about the traditions than about the belief.

Even among practicing Catholics, their knowledge of what the Pope is actually saying and doing is minimal, hence why so many Poles are ignoring the call to accept refugees from the boss man himself.

Watching a Canadian insult a Polish person that was born and educated in Poland is quite hilarious, I think.

Still, not a bad way to confirm in the minds of Poles that North Americans are not their friends. Of course, assuming that anyone actually intends to read the drivel above that seems to be nothing but one big personal attack on posters.

official celebrations

What official celebrations?

See, if you were here, you'd know that no-one cares about the Polonia in the US. Poles in the UK - yes, they care, because these people maintain strong links with Poland. But Polonia in the US/Canada? Blah, non-issue, no-one cares.

General perception of USA in England is positive

I think it really depends. The gun crime issue is something that we don't understand (how difficult can it be?), but then there's a lot of respect for American innovation and achievements.

The EU is crumbling

In your dreams. The EU is strong as ever, no matter what some American dreams of.

America is becoming more prosperous every day.

Strange. Other Americans on this forum feel differently, not least about the failing of the dollar and the rise of the Chinese.

Of course we would!

Hahahaha. Yeah, just like you helped bomb the hell out of Christian Serbs on behalf of Muslim Kosovans.
