Well, the balance must be there. There are generally accepted standards and no parent can just say no to it. And if they do they have to home school. If a parent wanted his kid to be taught that for example Catolicism is the only option and all the other Faith's should be crushed even by force would that be ok?

As someone who lives far away from family and friends I can say smartphone plus certain app are a godsend. Even more so now when travelling is so restricted.

On the smartphone thread it kicks me out...

I loved my Samsung flip phone! I think it was the phone I actually got attached to.

But since all sensible conversation finished here I will switch my attention somewhere else

Me too but it's not going to happen if only for the camera

I agree. It's just too convenient.

On the other hand I almost don't use computer outside of work so if I manage to reduce my screen time on the phone I'm on a good path :)

Btw, talking or texting while driving is not a smartphone issue but any phone . I am guilty of making maybe 5 phone calls in my life while driving. And at least one of them was in a dead stop traffic jam when I had to call I will be late

I'm seeing it more and more in the UK these days.

Really? I don't.

I try to limit pointless use. When one article leads to another and so on. I regularly read chosen websites and after that try to put down the phone and take book instead.

I wouldn't want to go completely smartphone free as staying in touch, managing my accounts and doing shopping is so easy...

These are work of arts.I always admired them.
My mum told me that for the first time there wasn't any decorations on my street. Even though I'm no church supporter I do feel sad that with falling believers numbers those things will disappear too.

I remember being taught that the real accomplishment is to make your language cleaner, simpler and clearer even if talking about complicated things.

English has very few barriers to entry early on. But ease of entry tends to coincide with greater barriers later on

That is what my English teacher once said comparing English and German:
English is easy at first and then it becomes hard. German start very hard but then it's much easier.

but that's not what most employers want....

In my experiencea lot of employers are quite clueless about what they need ( Poland was very bad in that respect)

And very few (comparatively) make it to C1 or C2

True but usually there is not much need.
