News / Polish diplomat Zbigniew Brzezinski has died [53]

Brzezinski was raised a good Catholic and has zero Jewish or non-ethnic Slavic roots whatsoever.

Yes.

He will be missed. A case of someone who crossed the world as an immigrant and achieved a lot.

No he wasn't. The 'wikianswerz' community isn't a source. He was such a hero that if he was even a bit Jewish, that community would have been proud to proclaim him as one of their own.

History / Polish hero discovers Jewish roots [25]

the late 19th and early 20th century

A time of huge population incease, as it happens.

I really don't know why the issue would be worth discussing - the important thing is Magdalena Grodzka-Guzkowska.

Talking about Jewish 'roots' is kind of racist.

In what way?

The "X is really a Jew" propaganda only works because there's a lot of overlap.

Quite. In bigger cities this is very much a thing.

Looks like the same person posting twice - and writing nonsense. Standards at The British School are very high and it has a good reputation.

To be frank as well, your logic really escapes me sometimes.

Indeed. Not that there is logic in there at all. Very hard to see how celebrating a Polish hero is racist.

A true hero. Reminds me of Irena Sendler, a remarkable person and very modest about what she did at great risk to herself:

A Polish social worker who saved 2,500 Jewish babies and children from the Nazi death camps was yesterday honoured as a national hero by the Polish parliament.

Love / They seem nice, but could Polish girls be "gold diggers"? [196]

In Warsaw, it's people, usually girls, trying to get people into strip bars, the kind where drinks are incredibly expensive. They can be very persistent and the bars more often than not belong to seriously dodgy people. One reason that they're so persistent is that they don't get many takers, but if they do, they get a cut of the spend.

They try with anyone, but if someone looks foreign and/or is wearing a suit, they really hassle you and don't want to take no for an answer.

It started in one place, the corner of Nowy Swiat and Chmielna/Foksal, however I've seen them doing it in a few places now, so obviously spreading across town. As far as I know, it's legal unfortunately.

and so it began they said they were students from jaggellonian and asked if id want to join them for a drink at their 'favorite bar.' one of the girls spoke half decent English but the other only spoke polish

B drinking is getting to be a real problem here now. Happens a lot in Warsaw.

I've heard the opposite. If you feel so negatively about it, why not give some concrete example and explain what your connection/experience with that school is.

Sad news. He was 89.

Born in Warsaw, he had a remarkable and stellar career in America, including as National Security Advisor.

UK, Ireland / Polish drink-driving murderer sentenced to 5.5 years in prison [99]

Here are some more cases, just scratching the surface. Evidently the problem of Poles and drunk driving is massive:

But they eventually revealed to police that the four had been drinking together in a lorry cab and Mr Kenig was very drunk and had become aggressive and abusive.

The driver of an HGV was more than three times over the drink drive limit six hours after he crashed on the A15. Tomasz Kogut, 40, from Poland, appeared at Lincoln Magistrates' Court

Agnieszka Lauks was seen swerving around in the road and braking for no reason and when she was stopped a breath test showed 142 micrograms of alcohol in her body - 35 is the limit.

News / Poland calls on British expertise to analyse the Smolensk accident [49]

"Polish prosecutors who are investigating the 2010 plane crash that killed President Lech Kaczynski and 95 others have sent samples from the plane for laboratory tests in Britain to help them determine whether an explosion caused the disaster."

Of course if the truth that emerges from the results doesn't fit the hystericall narrative, they'll probably ask for their money back...

Here's some shocking cases. barely the tip of the iceberg.

pointed out the UK statistics for drink-driving incidents are only lower because its threshold limits have to be set higher. B

A source for your assertions that: a. stats are lower for that reason, and b, they 'have to be' set higher?

Thought not...

never cope if it was as hardline as Poland is when it comes to public intoxication especially when driving.

The number of Poles convicted of that, as demonstrated above, certainly shows beyond any doubt that Britain's laws weren't made with Polish levels of drunkenness in mind.

This one is disturbing too. Hard to imagine that none of the people at his sisters house stopped him, and sad that they just let him drive away without calling the police:

A Polish man who drove whilst almost six times over the alcohol limit has been jailed for what a magistrate described as a "reckless disregard for life bordering on the suicidal".

This one, back in Poland and well publicised at the time is awful, the crowd of gawkers watching the aftermath doesn't help: mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/horrifying-video-shows-moment-drunk-6843807

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

The Opole scandal is still growing, with several other performers dissasociating themselves and doing Przystanek Woodstock instead.Very understandable given the attempt to politicise a popular music festival.

At this rate, they'll be left with a couple of disco polo groups and an old bloke with an accordion playing Besame Mucho.
