Life / What's the story with Nergal? (Singer from Behemoth) [40]

Religion isn't about killing? Then go and tell that to those Islamists that kill in the name of Allah. Jihad is Holy War and it's a doctrine.

Anyway, Nergal rejected the badge culture. It's a shortcut to thinking.

I think Russia is fighting an uphill battle with a gradient not measurable by any theodolite if it thinks that it can befriend Poland. You just have to do a cross sweep of Polish fora and you will see the NKVD or its successor, the KGB, being mentioned.

My point is, belief and faith, IS. Don't condition people into thinking anything, give them the info and then let them choose. Unity is just the extension of the sticker culture. Where is the UNDERSTANDING? Listen to what Nergal said, he said it well :)

Stick out, believe in sth because you believe in it, not because sb tells you that you should!

Love / Are all beautiful Polish girls as crazy as this? [262]

Amongst the most selfish I have known. I'm surprised such a kind of person can function in a team at all. It's like a constant battle and degradation attempt.

Language / Do Poles prefer US American or UK English language? [185]

Why the focus on utility, FUZZY? It gives identity and that counts to many people. Virtually all speakers of it can speak English too so why not have an extra string in the bow. Americans just don't seem to appreciate how big the accent and dialect aspects are for such a small island.

Delph and I could speak in Doric code and you wouldn't have a scooby.

He's Polish, he took a stand. He did what was expected of him in terms of not sitting on the fence. He, like me, rejects the labelling culture that is prevalent here. Listen to part 1 of the interview I posted above. Tell me, Karl, how is it in any way realistic that 95% of a country can somehow agree with the dictates of one strand of Christianity at the expense of the logic of the other ones? Poland is just a sheep culture and is full of sticker people. I'm glad that Scotland has more of a balance between Protestants and Catholics although they don't think enough either. All smart Poles have told me the same. Latvians seem to have the idea too, they aren't overly conditioned.

One or two of his tracks are ok. It's just not my style. I can listen to guitar licks in symphonic black metal but not growling. I know them through my wife, she's into BM.

Impeccable for a non-native speaker of English :)

Nergal is far more charismatic and articulate than most I see here. There is a Youtube interview of him being interviewed in Nottingham and his English is virtually flawless. I don't like his music but his self expression is clear.

Nergal is a highly articulate guy who comes across very well in interviews. His English is superb! Yes, I think he has leukaemia :( :( People can bounce back from it but God has to be on their side. Singing what he does, I doubt he will be but fingers crossed.

Well, Poland successfully staved off various threats and fought against the Islamisation of Europe many years ago :) It has always tried to preserve Christianity yet is liberal enough to allow Tatars the right to practise their religion.

Yeah, point taken about Kielce. However, the pogroms there were distorted by historians. It should always be remembered that it wasn't the fault of the Jews that Hitler came looking for them. Many Poles might have felt that the Jews were responsible for bringing the Nazis to Polish territory.

Many people just strike out due to anger, often in a wayward fashion. As Bono once said on Acrobat (Achtung Baby), 'I know you'd hit out, if you only knew where to hit'.

Well, it's a conscious choice of people whether to be antagonistic or not, HC. Some parts of Polish history are glorious and I guess part of that assessment comes through association. They have endured similar problems to the Scots, just on a bigger scale for them. Their very own national anthem even commemorates their struggle and states that Poland hasn't disappeared/died yet (jeszcze Polska nie zgineło). We shouldn't downplay their achievements and should always see the broader context in which they were won.

Not really, no. Again, it has to do with perceptions and they perceive Scottish accents to be strong. Mine really isn't unless I consciously trill my r's. I have quite a neutral accent and some Scots don't think I'm Scottish.

Taking responsibility has never been a strong suit here. The way corruption is dealt with is evidence of that. They laugh it off but seldom do anything concrete to resolve the problem.

Life / Why Do You Love Poland? [907]

I know, Zeti ;) ;)

I love some things in Poland but it's just idiotic to like the whole country. To say 'Kocham Cie Polsko' unequivocally is weird. It's just a slogan. Like Poles, I can see much good and much bad here.

They yelled that because they want to hammer a point home to the Polish FA. They don't really like Cameroon.

But this is the Polish way, M-G. One of my favourite students, Krystyna, told me all about it. It goes way back and it really caused problems at the time of the Polish Constitution of 1791. Potocki was a known dissident. They trip themselves up with their locking of horns, rather than listening to others.

Here, this sums it up, ...

Just be careful when you are out drinking with her. When I wasn't taken, many years ago now, I would find that the sexy ones, logically enough, had these huge dudes around them. Many Polish guys are reasonable and I could strike a chord but that can go out of the window when they drink. Then you could find yourself confronting 4 massive dudes. You are not going to win that one.

Food / Traditional Polish Soups. [85]

Nah, not if you eat soups you won't be :)

I know Poland has a broad range of soups but I tend to see rosół (broth) all too often. I'm not complaining as I like it :)

easteuropeanfood.about.com/od/polishsoups/Polish_Soup_Recipes.htm

these are just some of the tasty soups on offer.

I had some botwinka (botwina) 10 mins ago. Very tasty indeed! I can't translate it into English. It had potatoes, meatballs, carrots and strips of sth or other.

Can any resident Pole translate the name of this soup?

That's the one :) Thanks for the correction, pgtx :) :) Maybe one day I will get the spelling right :)

It's a great soup for next to no money. I'd love a cream of chicken soup here but Poland doesn't seem to have that one. Scots and Poles really make some of the best soups in the world. We are joint world champions! :) :)

However, the best soup in the world, IMHO, is clam chowder and it's neither Scottish nor Polish.

Wodzonka is delicious :)

You heat up a litre of water (not quite to the boil) and then throw in 2 stock cubes (rosół z kury). Wait til they dissolve, then add some curry powder (this is my idea, not typical) and some ground pepper (best crush the balls yourself). After you mix these ingredients together, add a head worth of crushed garlic (finely cut) and 3 slices of bread, torn up into smaller pieces. Keep on a moderate heat setting for around 2 mins and voila! Pycha!
