News / The Iran war and Poland [826]

Exactly that.

Europeans in the Northwest, Arabs in the south (where the oil is) and the Persians occupying a relatively small crescent in the hills. The rest is a huge salt desert and barren mountains.

Almost impossible to invade the Persian heartland. Vulnerable only to nukes, hybrid warfare and large scale conventional bombings.

Yes they are and yes they have

There have been good times, and Poland remembered the help they'd had from Iran when the Chios were down and they couldn't get Covid vaccines.

There were problems just before that though; a minor diplomatic crisis and even recently, Iran was angry with Poland about some weapons (drones I th8 k) that had been diverted elsewhere.

I'm afraid Polish public opinion is divided on the matter

I hear mostly pro-USA and pro-Israel sentiment. Pope JPII's praise of and affection for Israel ar a large part of that.

They are, however, also a totalitarian theocratic regime

The regime and the people are so different. Remember the crisis a couple of years ago with all the demonstrations (and executions). We also forget that Iran is multicultural with Europeans living in the north east of the country,

A quick question (didactic, not rhetorical) - I just read a book about this). Do you know why the Shah named the modern state Iran rather than Persia?

Ghaddafi

That wasn't what killed him tnough.

rump was elected on.... He is breaking his promises.

No surprises there. He craps out of everything and it's very hard to believe he's really in charge. Fortunately their 'deep state' know what they're doing.

That's irrelevant. Behave.

This is a war that could potentially affect all of us in Poland.

The only direct effect so far is President Nawrocki's plane being delayed and an embassy in Warsaw belonging to one of the two belligerents closing temporarily.

Israel

As you would know if you lived in Poland, Polish public opinion is firmly behind Israel.

It's all kicking off now.

Tusk said the world has not been this close to a global conflict since World War II. "The confrontation between Israel and Iran is moving towards a regular war in the region that may destabilise the whole world," the prime minister wrote on social media.
tvpworld.com/87289600/europe-presses-iran-for-talks-as-poland-warns-of-war

Poland has traditionally had good relations with Iran. The Shah of Iran helped Polish refugees in WWII and Poland donated millions of zl of Vaccines during the COVID crisis.

If this situation escalates, it will affect us all. We are very close to a World War.

Feedback / I love this forum - It's so Polish: tolerant, inconsistent, amusing [337]

ussian-ukrainian war,

Do you mean the illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine?

anti-russian insults

What insults?

And he started long long before the invasion.

went unheard

So?

Do you think it's acceptable to say repeatedly and almost daily that all women are bítches, that people who are black or Muslim should be killed, all the homophonic stuff and also, again, again, again, daily, the transphobia?

It puts people off coming here, trashes threads and this is deliberat.

just WORDS

'Just' words that have turned this forum from a avluable resource on Poland and a civilised place to talk about it, to a place where no new people will post and which is packed full with deliberate and mentally unhealthy hate speech.

Why tolerate anyone who deliberately trashes threads?

that every poster has to conform or else

Why do you think that's a "basic idea".

None of us conform much. Yet in society, those who cross certain lines involving insanity and aggression get a smack in the kisser or get locked up.

Decent human behaviour has boundaries though and this is a discussion forum and a resource on Poland, not bloody 4Chan.

bitching behind a posters "back"

Everything is readable here.

butting heads

Almost all of us do that. There's a difference between decent discussion and utterly nihilistic behaviour and a declared intent to trash threads.

He would t behave like that in real life. Humans self regulate within groups and smack people like that in the mouth. If they don't learn, society excludes them.

He has not learnt.

Work / Warsaw job with US experience (tech company) [11]

least a masters degree

A lot of the Polish ones are well below the level of the bachelors I did back in the 80s in England.

It's degree inflation. Not just a Polish thing.

This forum is one of the greats.

One of the best resources on Poland in the English language. All shades of opinions too and different people's insight.

Now, people ask questions on crapola Facebook or Reddit threads. They take one look here and see the "all women are bìtches", "kill trannies", "kill blacks", "faggots have aids" and all the maga maga gun gun stuff and don't post. People in real life, new to Warsaw, have said this to me.

In a thousand years time, AI robots will be studying the history of the early internet and see that this was a great thing destroyed by a nasty old git.

This is the photo it was cropped from. Should give a clue about why it's special and what the metalwork is for.

I think it's Teatr Wielki

It is. The main auditorium.

And what's very special about that opera house that is both an advantage and a disadvantage?

Why is it there? Not just decorative.

Hotel Bristol

That's a good guess. It looks a bit like that.

That's good news

Brilliant

Thanks.

In a way, most buildings in the centre of Warsaw are relatively new. This is post-war but not modern.

The metal that you can see in the picture is decorative but also has a specific function.

The interior of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw?

No, but a brisk walk away from that. In Warsaw city centre.

Incidentally, the building is special inside in a very specific way, one that both limits its use and creates great opportunities.

You know this building. It's great. Or as we'd say in South Yorkshire, "Eeh bah Gock, it's ret grand".

Polonia / Polish bus crash in Croatia. Is there a fate? [229]

one woman was 10 minutes late and therefore did not fly. It saved her life.

Lucky.

Like the Sikh guy who spent too long in the bar at Heathrow and missed PanAm 103 that went down over Lockerbie.

That lady died not long ago. The Yugoslavian air steward who fell out of the plane, fell thousands of feet to earth and miraculously survived.

Miracles can and do happen.

Where is 'here'?

We are about $700 short of the sum required to keep PF alive

We'd better dip into our pockets. I'm sure Novi has already, being so rich from the 'American dream'.

Here's a photo riddle. I took the pic that this is cropped from in Poland. It's taken in a famous place, Where and what?

BTW, it went fine today. Not a melanoma and nicely lasered with smoke and crackling noises.

Law / Gun control in Poland: should Polish people be allowed to own guns? [1070]

The concept of freedom and the frontier experience exist in a feedback loop...

Every country has its own cultural DNA. Ours are the Four Estates (arguably five). That document about Divvis Flats in Glasgow that you linked to is part of the Fourth Estate, as are some of the tabloid articles that trolls here occasionally link to. It may look like washing dirty linen in public, however it is in fact part of the process of maintaining stability and effecting necessary change.

In the US, you cannot vote to deprive me of my ability to defend my family and myself

No, however people with more and bigger guns than you can lay your wizened old fingers on can do precisely that and do it very efficiently and quickly.

Law / Gun control in Poland: should Polish people be allowed to own guns? [1070]

More likely it's lingering effect of the frontier experience. Generations of people pushing across the continent

Makes sense. We did all that 1500 years ago, so it's settled down a bit. Our residents of Dodge City spoke Latin, Welsh and Englisc.

r

You wouldn't know "put to rest" if it climbed into your battered old car, ran over that fake wishing well you have in your garden and bummed Lil' Stabby.

Repeating the same nonsense about wanting gun laws weakened doesn't make any difference, In Europe we are happy without your high levels of gun crime.

debate

This is not a debating club.

Law / Gun control in Poland: should Polish people be allowed to own guns? [1070]

It means nothing in

That has nothing to do with Poland or anywhere else in Europe.

enlightening them

You aren't. We are more developed in Europe and not interested in a society with so much gun crime and such a high murder rate.

We've seen how your "freedom" works: daily shootings and paranoia. Keep your sick Wild West fantasies where it belongs. Stuffed up your obese arses and far far away from Poland or anywhere else in Europe.

Law / Gun control in Poland: should Polish people be allowed to own guns? [1070]

In most of Europe, heavy gun control is the will of the people. A reason why parties who support weak gun control don't win votes.

the US Constitution

It means nothing in Europe.

Anyway, we're talking about Poland, and there is no significant movement to change the present law.

News / European News and Poland Thread - part 4 [980]

misguided ideas

Who decides which ideas are "misguided" and which aren't?

There is no single solution or recipe that guarantees success. Modernity has brought forth the notion that there is one specific formula

That's the old "no labels, no solutions" argument. Don't you think it's a paradox, I-S, how rejecting progress always gets dressed up as wisdom. Clarity isn't delusional; it's how humanity truly moves forward most sustainably.

Are you referring to those with strong opinions? They make up about 20% of every society; another 20% consists of the criminal class

So... progress is just a niche hobby, the poor are a moral threat, and the masses are sheep? Sounds less like analysis and more like a convenient excuse to ignore change.

Reducing people to percentages and dismissing their agency isn't insight - it's elitism. Progress isn't driven by a chosen few; it's built when ordinary people demand better and refuse to be written off.

We don't use czosnek in bigos

Thank God. Some bigos has blobs of raisin paste in which lift it though.

Even though ogórki małosolne are nice and crunchy, the cz*sn*k just spoils them and they're better without.

tamarind

Not a fan.. Don't worry about the 4% though. With tamarind, less is usually more.
