Language / Dog Commands in Polish [49]

I've never heard it at all. Is it American?

Not marked as such here:

dictionary.cambridge.org/pl/dictionary/english/sic-on

More info on it:

youtube.com/watch?v=iZldPl6q8CE

As a command for dogs I've only ever heard 'sic 'em' regardless of the number or sex of the target (and tbh I've only heard it used seriously in tv/movies, in real life I've only ever heard it as a joke)

Sic

Never heard this used by itself.... it's usually "sic 'em!"

Maybe "Atak!"

Did you know

That you have a weird obsession with forum members and try to track and spy on them.... yeah I knew that. Have a little dignity and stop.

News / How will Polish-American relations change if Trump is elected president again? [812]

Is there such a thing as pre-election silence in the US?

I don't think officially and political discussion goes on uninterrupted through the voting. The big problem comes though from the time zones and networks wanting to call the entire election for one candidate as soon as possible.... in one election (1980?) the networks called the election for one candidate while the west coast still had several hours of voting left... many people didn't bother and felt cheated out of their votes....

I don't necessarily think political discussion should stop but I'm against revealing too much of the results before the west coast polls are closed (Alaska and Hawaii can fend for themselves).

Cracker is the slang name given to Krakow

By who? Kraków doesn't sound anything like GAE 'cracker' (neither vowel is close at all).

Cracker ranks with 'Poless' as one of the worst linguistic creations by anyone on the forum....

Also

Heel! = Do nogi!

A female dog is suka (b1tch) diminutive suczka. A few decades ago it was only used about canines but under translation pressure from English the word is also now used about women the speaker doesn't like....

Bad dog = no such thing

Or just Źle! (bad!)

It's fun watching a narcissist jump through fire hoops backwards to avoid admitting that they were wrong.

Normal people: Okay, I was wrong, thanks for the correction.

Narcissist: Actually I was right because on page 238 of the Griderburg manual on line 27 (and on and on for hours).

not fantasising about punching them in the face

Men who fantasize about punching nuns in the face.... seldom do anything positive with their lives.

don't understand the difference between chodzić and idzić

chodzić - by foot, no particular destination
iść - by foot with a destination

nb. some usage departs from that in set phrases but that's the basic distinction

"command form" of verbs (if there even is such a thing).

Yes, it's called the imperative (tryb rozkazujący in Polish).

The second person singular familiar (that you would use with a dog) is made in various ways, they usually involve adding a -j to the final vowel of the stem or dropping the final vowel of the stem.

czytać: czyta- czytaj

pisać: pisze- pisz-

There are rules about which to use but at this stage just learn which with particular verbs.

Life / Fast Food missing in Poland [48]

- want to try Ethiopian, one of the few things I never ate

Very good and very unique. Lots of very spicy meat/veg sauces eaten with a spongy kind of naleśnik (that is you use the naleśnik to pick up a bite and eat).

Some of the dishes are 'cooked' with acids from the spices rather than heat.

There's also a very nice honey liqueur called 'tej' (rhymes with fudge) and Ethiopian coffee is the best in the world imho.

Ethiopian music is (or was the last I knew) also very nice, very distinctive.

Tex Mex --- I only spent 2 days in Mexico for work and all I remember of the food is OK salads and leathery steaks.

Mexico is like China or Italy, the cuisine is very regional. The US version is based on the extreme north (and US Southwest) which used to be Mexico.

Maybe you were in Monterrey? IIRC it's the simplest region, kind of meat and potatoes... I like central southern the best with things like chilaquiles and ceviche (fish 'cooked' in lemon juice).

Also, it was sad to hear about the death of Zającówna a gifted character actress who made lots of movies and tv series better.

a Polish country style song

No, it's a Polish cover of the Hank Williams song Jambalaya (and later covered by many different artists from different genres including rockers Creedence Clearwater Revival and the smooth pop duo the Carpenters).

I remember around 1980-81 an American news report about Poland and at one point they showed university students singing Jambalaya.... in impeccable British English... which was surreal. The song is not meant to be sung in the usual country music dialect but in a version of Cajun English (from Louisiana).

Here's a video of the original (with lyrics, which you can see are.... a little weird). Nb Jambalaya is a seafood rice dish from Louisiana.

Life / Mishmash facts about Poland and Poles [187]

When it gets dark so early makes me feel like the walls are closing in. I really don't like the lack of light,

I agree with that. My first winter in Poland (after living in a place where winter was pretty mild and days weren't that much shorter or longer during the year) was pretty rough. I got used to the cold pretty quickly but I wasn't prepared for the dark. It took a few winters before I adapted to that. For a time a local greenhouse garden open to the public was very helpful in december through february...

Life / Mishmash facts about Poland and Poles [187]

This year before the first day of class I had internalized the idea that my schedule was the same as last year. Then I doubled checked in the morning and either I had misread the first schedule or my first class had been moved forward and was about to begin in a few minutes.... I raced out the door calling the office on the way to let them know I was delayed but was on my way fortunately the streetcar showed up just as I was reaching the stop and everything else went smoothly... missed just about 20 minutes of that class....

Life / Polish Nursery Rhymes [253]

and from what you say I gather it's a British word

well fava comes from Italian.... I think fava was used some in America (esp Italian Americans) but not a common name, I had no idea what fava beans were when Silence of the Lambs came out and though I did know broad beans I didn't connect the two

think it's always fava bean

I think most Americans only know 'fava bean' from Hannibal Lecter... I'd always called them broad beans. I'd never had them fresh though before Poland... In the US I had only had snacks, some from Peru where they just throw it into a fire (very hard, tooth hazard) and Chinese (where they deep fry the total crap out of them).

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

They cut the legs off with a sharp curved blade

Where I'm from (a supplier of places that eat them) apparently they used scissors.... there was a newspaper story on those in the local frog industry that caused a bit of an uproar....

Several months ago, at a dinner I had been invited to by several Chinese people, I tried one of the dishes and the eyes of those sitting next to me lit up..."Do you know what that is?" they asked, clearly delighted..... "Frogs"

It was... okay.... the Chinese there said the dishes very very authentic and I didn't recognize most of them (conceptually the weirdest were flat noodles that looked like tagliatelle but made of tofu....). Mostly there were bowls with solids suspended in sauce, the chinese plucked out the solids and mostly ignored the sauces.

News / Polish final report on Smoleńsk aircrash [870]

Why would they bother and organize some assassination?

Not only that.... russians tend to be bunglers and usually leave fingerprints all over the place... it would be screamingly obvious if they had been involved.

what Russians have done since, like the Novichock attacks, are you at least not a bit suspicious of the Russians?

What I've always said is that it is something russians would do if they wanted and had the chance but.... there's no real evidence that they were involved (while AM's dodgy connections to russia have long been known, same as Morawiecki's dad....).

The unfortunate accident was weaponized by PiS.

. People were simply told that if they wanted to do certain things (e.g. eat in restaurants)

Or work.... and be able to afford rent and food.....

It was coercion, quite shamelessly so and the inability of people to recognize that is concerning.
