History / Modern myths and legends about communist past in Poland [250]

Plus thick steel.

Ladas (and the earlier Polski-Fiats, though they were rarer) used to be built like tanks. They were popular with elderly drivers who appreciated coming off better in a minor accident.

a Skoda 125 in early 1980s and they sold it after a year

As I remember, they had steering problems.

Cheap but with rich equipment

That was often why people bought them. A typical FSO Polonez driver in the UK would be a university lecturer or public administrator, not looking for a car as a status symbol. not wanting to get into debt, but wanting something big enough for passengers and reasonably economical on fuel.

Why would PIS even NEED

They knew there would be protests (after last year's huge Czarny Protest; they hoped to minimise them by passing the buck.

Plus some other factors like showing off that they've packed the Tribunal with their cronies. That and opposition within PiS by its more moderate members (they do exist) to this extreme measure. While at the same time dogwhistling about their appalling 'fourth republic' concept; any doubt about the effectiveness of the constitution subtly works in their favour..

jokes about the name

As far as I know, people did sometimes used to joke about the name. If there was a dearth of jokes however, that was probably because Poles knew that Skodas (crap though they were) were much better (or far less bad) than Polski-Fiat.

That and the Yugo

There were Lada and Skoda as well, both of them much more popular than Polski-Fiat which only really became visible when the FSO Polonez came out..

Wartburg Knights went on sale in the UK back in the 60s however they never took off and I don't remember ever seeing any.

We usd to have a joke:
Q. How do you double the value of a Skoda?
A. Fill the petrol tank.

Polonez

Those used to be imported to the UK back in the 80s as a cheap alternative. The importer used to replace some of the engine parts with better ones and send the original ones back to Warsaw.

Law / Dispute with Landlord - overcharged for renovation [7]

Rather she is threatening me to report my debt to the Voivodship Office so that I can not get the TRC.

It makes no difference.

Then just leave - she will have to find you, hire a lawyer and do all the other stuff.

This is good advice; there is little or nothing she can realistically do.

today, PiS act like neobolsheviks, so we need to use old methods on them: In 1980

This is clear.

Guys, history is being created on our eyes.

Hopefully it will continue. PiS can be stubborn and will need a concerted effort to defeat.

Would that be Christabel?

Adela Pankhurst. The one that was sent off to Australia to keep her out of the public eye. She was involved in far-right activism there and was interned during the war for pro-Axis agitation.

Sylvia was a socialist wasn't she? Spent most of her adult life in Ethiopia

She was, and a staunch anti-racism campaigner. As far as I know she has descendants still in Ethiopia. She was a good person.

Christobel eventually became part of the Plymouth Brethren movement (whose views on the role of women tend not to sit well with feminism). She was (an interesting and complex person, who was quite big on the TV talk show circuit in her old age.

Opportunities and abilities not money.

Precisely; a system where someone without inherited money has opportunity to thrive and the ability to do so. You could of course leave potential talent in the slums without any opportunity or chance to realise the best their abilities allow.

sure tribal 'kings' from 1000 of years ago - sure but not in the case of the history quite recent.

That doesn't actually make any sense.

Mrs Pankhurst and her daughters in England - also Christians.

Indeed very far from Jewish, and in the case of the daughters, as far from Christian as it gets, one of them strongly supporting 30s fascism and the Third Reich.

Wow, those females from Women`s Strike are fast

This could be the beginning of something important. It's understandable that someone wouldn't want laws concerning their female bodies to been 30 years ago by males who were already old then.

We are able to shape ourselves like an artisan blacksmith shapes a blade

We can if we aren't economically disadvantaged; if we are empowered, we can create our building.

The first generation make the money, the second spend it, the third waste what's left.

there are a number of very ordinary people who can claim distant royal ancestry, but there's nothing remotely regal in their bearing

Many thousands of us.

And my surname and coat of arms were given to my family and lineage

Humnan qualities and ability are not automatically inherited; genes don't work like that. They're basically a lottery. Most of us would be very surprised if we could meet our ancestors.

Then it was grabbed and looted in late 1940's

That was certainly some twisted form of Communism. Socialism certainly doesn't exclude small businesses.

On the other hand a dictatorship under my control would be hugely successful.

You'd be a late-stage Salazar.

Via corruption and kissing the ass of the party lol.

Not especially, although you've just described capitalism perfectly.

Hopefully on Monday the government will begin work urgently to resolve the abortion issue,

Either permit it at the request of any pregnant woman (which they'll not do), or announce that the're ignoring the recent tribunal ruling (hard), or have more and more protests. Or declare Martial Law, which Rear Arsemiral Jaro-zelski would love to do.

Surely it was the advanced western countries that were on the road to communism by the 1970

It's a long long road, as Marx always said.

But neoliberalism has now long outlived any usefulness it might have once had...

Agreed. What it may morph into is truly worrying.

it lies in human nature to climb the social ladde

A big part of Socialism is people being able to climb the ladder. By merit rather than inherited privilege and wealth earned by others.

It's true though. Nobody ever anticipated that a pre-industrial society like Russia would bypass Socialism entirely and move to their own form of Communism. Much less, impose it on other pre-industrial societies like Poland.

And now we see an ignorant backlash, a regime voted for by villagers, one where women can't even have control over their own bodies.

Nevertheless, the direction that history has moved in has always in the scheme of things been away from the right and towards the left. Even Kaczyński's PiS introduced 500+, a Socialist move if ever there was one.

but they are voluntarily euthanizing their grandparents instead.

The answer is entirely in the hands of PiS.

The Champions League games in Liverpool and Milan

Time will tell if the current pro-democracy protests have an effect.

At least they were wearing masks.

elected Government running scared

They are running scared; even the puppet Duda has started to backtrack in a roundabout way.

They've started something that they can't stop, and the scale of it has shocked them. Even if they try to impose a lockdown, they won't end it.

That's normal for you. It's been that way for years.

Yeah, right....

pigeons and stray cats to

Don't worry child, you won't take the thread off topic.

Since the protests will keep coming until there's resolution to the issue. Even if Jaro declares a lockdown to try and stop them, they'll keep happening, Poland is on the crest of a wave right now.

you would never know this.

Really? ;-)

You must be so grateful to the other poster for mentioning this.

It was on the news here. You'd not have understood that though since it was in Polish...

Too far, too cold, too expensive to travel there and back,

12zl in an uber? BTW, it was a fairly mild evening here. There were also protests just down the road at Jaro's house; tens of thousands of people according to those there.

Busy tonight, cooking for some guests tomorrow. And besides, I was out showing solidarity to the protesters this week already, and will doubtless be at other protests. Something you can watch on TV if they cover it in your country.

The heartening thing (apart from the sheer scale) was how peaceful the protestors were. Some pseudopatriotic kibole tried to cause trouble however the police arrested them right away.
