Life / Paintings of artists from Poland? [192]

Instead of all the sad stuff in Random chat here's something nice. It's by Stanisław Masłowski (1853-1926). He painted this one in 1894 and it is called Wschód księżyca (Moonrise).

News / New "Polish memorial" in Berlin [316]

Visegrad has a larger purpose.

What is that purpose?

Germany is so big and artificial ..... implode

It's been "big and artificial" for over a thousand years and hasn't "imploded" yet, despite ups and downs that would severely challenge most societies..

News / Poland's indecent junk capitalism? [53]

the Norwegians, the Danes, and the Swedes

Three countries doing very well indeed.

And somehow, they manage to supply power to the whole country.

Visegrad

Failing. As an anti-German alliance it's a spectacularly useless one.

Germany is economically (and numerically) the dominant state in Central Europe. One with far more friends than enemies.

I'm not selfish. I consider the general interest before my little self

Sadly, so few do.

Watching capitalism fall so spectacularly is a sad thing.

Food / Bary mleczne/milk bars in Poland [31]

poor folk filling up on very cheap good food.

They're doing very well in lockdown selling take away only. If people want to buy in rather than cook, want to stretch their legs, don't want restaurant prices for eating lunch at home and don't want the muck that is a usual takeaway in Poland, they're ideal.

you buy the whole set like they serve in a restaurant it almost comes out to 16 to 20 $ a meal

Rubbish.

News / Unfulfilled promises by PiS [559]

Szydło, promised that PIS won`t bring in police against demonstrators and protesters, ...... because we respect dialogue, fredom and difference of opinion.

Have you seen the rows of police in Zoliborz some nights. More cops than residents. It's back to the PiSRL sadly

Poland already turning to its ancient money flow from Baltic to Balkan

Actual evidence doesn't back this up. What 'money flow'?

without waiting Vatican to approve it.

What doe the Vatican have to do with anything?

Not in time of weapons of mass destruction

Germany isn't allowed to have its own.

Religion had enormous impact on people

Not any more.

morbid friendship with Russia?

It's not 'morbid friendship', it's realpolitik..

Whether it was all those pre-1871 individual German states as part of the Empire, whether it's Germany today or whether it's the difficult times caused by the unpleasant polities that exited between them, it's neither friendship with Russia or enmity with it.

Two large land-based polities separated by Poland and in times past, jostling for economic/military influence and mutually distrusting each other.

The time for wars and conflict are past, despite Putin's attempts to destabilise the EU and NATO, something that all member states and all outside observers are aware of.

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

Have you ever noticed that they put sugar in their pastry?

if savory pastry

A little while before the lockdown we were sharing a taxi back from somewhere with two Polish ladies, one in her 80s who'd lived in France and one in her 60s.

The older one was telling the younger one about a wonderful recipe she knew, how versatile and easy it was etc, etc, and was describing it step-by-step to the other who had never heard of it. It was shortcrust pastry!

She used all butter too.

Pastry shouldn't have anything added to it

Flan pastry (with an egg in) can be useful, though I'd only use it if the pie filling is going to be wet and even then I'd probably just do a 'plate pie' (probably called something else outside Yorkshire) instead where it's basically just a pastry lid over something.

Very partial to vol-au-vents - so 1970s dinner party chic :)

They deserve a revival. Not just the mini ones that Iceland sell frozen but the big French kind. There's a restaurant in Lomianki that specialises in galettes (it's the main thing on the menu) which remind me a bit of that.

History / Malinowo: Polish-Nazi Supression? [447]

There were probably Polish Tatars (Muslim) in some of them

There were.

The service of the Jewish Poles is without question,

This is true. Many suffered in the service of their country.

This is true, especially the Brits and ANZACs.

suet

Suet here all goes into kielbasa. Pastry isn't much of a thing at all.

I bring Atora from the UK (or did until brexit).

I've always fancied one of these. Like pasties but savoury at one end and sweet at the other:

Poles who had never heard of pasties.

Whenever I've made Cornish pasties here, they've always gone down really well.

Love / Incels in Poland [299]

i became almost like a male prostitute for older women or just fat chicks even a gypsy with flabby tits

Most incels can only dream of that.

There's something blocking them from life, and a hatred of women in general that you don't have.

they literally think its the mans job to buy them crap

Right or wrong, that's evolved over millennia.

That just sounds like a temporary drought.

True incels have never been near a woman (or man).

There's already examples of violence in schools from such people

A teenager was jailed in Warsaw for minimum 25 years this week for an attack in school.

Love / Incels in Poland [299]

There's a very interesting article about 'incels' (basically a women-hating male virgin subculture) in Poland:

"They are among us and this is a problem that will grow. In Poland we have a very visible dualistic upbringing, which will result in a larger group of men in involuntary celibacy, that is what being an incelebrity boils down to."

kobieta.onet.pl/kim-sa-incele-nienawidza-kobiet-i-zyja-w-celibacie-ale-niedobrowolnym/6tpcdcj

There have been 5 shootings in America and one in Germany by 'incels'. How long before something bad happens here?

Some wise advice from an article called "Incel or Loser":
"How can a woman defend herself against an incel?

Zero tolerance and no ignoring him. This only emboldens him. An incel only attacks out of hiding so there is little risk of physical confrontation. I recommend reporting offensive posts to the police."

Food / Is Społem popular in Poland [8]

food co-operatives.

I never quite figured out how (or even if) you could join Społem. No information in store at all.

-awful, and I mean AWFUL customer service.

I noticed that; it was actively bad.

Having food that's fresh and local is a big plus over Żabka or Carrefour Express though.

I wonder for what purpose.

Providing chaplaincy services within the armed forces as well as potential burials, grave markers and memorial services.

Happened before, happens today. The Polish Armed forces have Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim and Orthodox chaplsincies.

Work / Working as a PL-EN translator - good idea? Sworn translators in Poland. [27]

Plus I don't think it pays that much.

It doesn't pay much, the rate is fixed and there are a hell of a lot of people who've passed the exam (especially before it got harder) all chasing the same work. If you can translate between Polish and Chinese or Turkish or whatever, it's worth doing. English, German, Russian, no. Plus they want a certyfikat niekaralności.
