Life / 200zl mandat and 3 points for not wearing seatbelts? [75]

did they nail you with the speed gun?

How about this. About four years ago the cops turned up one Sunday at my place and showed me a picture of my car, taken with a portable, un-manned speed-trap camera going through a village. The instrument said I'd been going 82kph. The road in that village has since been resurfaced, but at that time it was terrible, and I always went slowly through it. I was fined 200PLN and got six points. I'm always ready to put my hands up and admit it if I've screwed up, but on this occasion I was definitely not going more than 40 or 50kph. But hey, wtf could I do? Argue with a camera? I paid up. Yes, I know I could have argued the case in court and demanded that the device be tested, etc. etc. but I reckoned it would have cost me thousands to do that and I probably would have lost anyway.

Life / 200zl mandat and 3 points for not wearing seatbelts? [75]

I've been fined and pointed twice for this, 50PLN and two points, then 100 + 2. I knew the law and chose to flaunt it.
I agree that cops everywhere could make friends by using their discretion more, but we are in no position to complain when they don't.

Yes we were in the wrong

Suck it up, soldier!

Love / Valentines Day & Polish men [130]

Man, they are so evil, those Jews, celebrating love like they do.

Yes. I over-reacted. It must be a combination of tiredness (euphemism) and the weary expectation of racism on PF. Apologies to Kazilowski. And thanks to modnafil for my deserved chastisement. and so to bed...

Love / Valentines Day & Polish men [130]

Its a western (I think even Jewish) tradition,

Good ole PF to attract a Jew-hater to even the most innocuous thread.
I buy one red rose for my loved-one on Valentine's day. It's not because I'm a sucker for the gross commercializion of Christmas, etc. In fact we spent no more last Christmas than in any other week. I do it because it's a nice gesture. Who says it has to be old to be good?

Travel / What is the weather like in Poland where you are now? [202]

So you are glad the Mrs bought you thermals for xmas lol

I only wear long-johns when it gets below -30, but my old Russian fur hat saw service for the first time this year yesterday. When it was bad a few years ago the missus wanted me to wear her tights, but I declined on the grounds that it was kinky and I might get to like it.

They reckon it'll get down to below thirty here tonight, and then improve over the next few days. Hope tf they're right.

Real Estate / Home builders in Poland? [16]

architektura-murator.pl
Check out this site. They have lots of projects. We paid a few thousand PLN for full architect's plans, and then paid a local architect to make some adjustments.

As for hiring a team of builders, we were very lucky. If you do this, insist on a schedule and insist on a no booze on-site rule.

any plausible excuse just to carry on.

What do you use to calm your agression? I am under no illusion whatsoever as to the dangers of tobacco smoking. We are not all deluded on PF.

I keep a couple in the flat and a six D cell version in the car (results in the same solutions as a baseball bat but far few questions about it, and it helps you see after dark).

Before my (tiny) sister-in-law got married she attended a self-defence class for women run by a good-hearted copper. He told the women to keep a six D cell Maglite under the bed for the same reason you imply.

One of mine was sleeping last night with her head wedged inside the radiator.

Poor puss! Did you read about those people complaining that the powers that be in their block had limited the heating to 18c? That's ok for adults but for families with littluns it's too low, especially now. What's the usual temp. in flats?

Travel / What is the weather like in Poland where you are now? [202]

-29,5°C in January 2006

That winter I was shovelling snow out front. Later I discovered that my Maglite had dropped out of my pocket. I didn't find it until the spring, at the bottom of our pond, where it had been for about three months. It worked without even a change of batteries. The best thing to have ever come out of California. (Hungarian invetor, I think. Maybe Polish!) I wrote and thanked Maglite for their great product and they sent me another one. Cool firm.

It was minus 20 this morning here in Podlasie; about minus 14 now. I've got the car covered with old carpets as we're expecting another cold one tonight and I have to leave for work at six tomorrow. The cat refuses to stay out for more than two minutes. I heard it's much less cold in the West of the country. Anyone?

Life / Price of cigarettes in Poland? [192]

OK, so I'm a disgusting smoker, but it's not quite as simple as that. A doctor pal of mine told me that when he was a student at the Middlesex hospital in London the anatomy prof. showed students two lungs: one from a life-long non-smoker who lived on the Commercial Road in east London, and one from a country-dwelling moderate smoker. The former was in a much worse state than the latter.

Still, it's better to give up if you can; more money for booze.

Take note Harry and Delph. No American, not even an Irish-American under sixty years of age, would use this expression. Let's put the lid on this Mark B. crap once an for all.

Food / Black pudding & kaszanka [30]

It is a thing of genius pam

That it is.

it is sto procent disgusting. was forced to try it once....never again

Pam, how can you say that? If there is the right proportion of blood and fat, black pudding is sublime, especially when served with bacon and eggs.

Polish black pudding tends to fall apart in the frying pan; English, Irish, Scottish and French pud has a firmer texture and stays together.

UK, Ireland / Warning to British people visiting Poland!! Don't get drunk and smash the place up! [447]

Do that in the UK and the police are too worried about the consequences to do anything

The London ambulance service now has dedicated vehicles for picking up drunks. They are known as vomit comets, which is pretty funny until you realise that the drunks now know that if they get smashed out of their heads, they can get two or three trained people to look after them in a nice warm ambulance. They should have drunk tanks in the UK. They would make people think very seriously about that last round of slammers.

Life / Automobiles vs. Pedestrians in Poland [77]

what do you do if you need to go to the neighbouring village on the same road - go through the mud of the field roads?

I'd suggest wearing a fluorescent jacket and having lights on the bike for a start. I've nearly killed several invisible cyclists and my nightmare is having to stand in a courtroom while relatives scream at me for killing their loved one. The authorities could do a lot more to improve this situation.

Life / Automobiles vs. Pedestrians in Poland [77]

dedicated traffic police units, funded entirely by fines

Steady on. That sounds like a recipe for abuse and corruption. I agree that the cops do very little to combat bad driving and, let's face it, when the weather is bad, you know they won't be around!

What kills me is that they seem to ignore cyclists dressed in dark clothing and without lights. I once saw a police van slowly overtake three such cyclists without stopping.

To someone who has actually been in Poland at all (ie, not you Polonius/Des) - have you ever seen this chalked on a "new" flat door?

It used to be chalked up a lot more than nowadays, that's for sure. btw I was a little surprised to hear that people give the opłatek to their dogs. Apparently you can buy special coloured ones for the purpose.

Food / Does Poland have any similar beers to guinness? [22]

I've just had a Żywiec porter, which is new, I think. It comes in 33cl bottles and at 9.5% packs quite a punch. In fact I feel as if I've had three normal beers. I'm now debating whether to have another one or a little lie down.

to chemistry and the unscrupulousness of the food industry.
Poles with regards to snacking and processed foods I recommend that you be yourselves- "the French amongst the Slavs".

Your punctuation and spelling are even worse than usual.

They reek like an Asiatic weaponized Doritos on crack!

Does this make sense to anyone? Dessie, buy stuff with a lower THC content.
