Language / Mixed English Grammar Thread [233]

I understand the "book" sentence but after having it sorted out in 50%, I was still left with too many words.

All of the words are needed. I don't know how to punctuate it though. I have no idea about it in English.

Here is the sense
Daddy, why did you bring that book up(stairs) for?
I don't want to be read to (by you=daddy) out of (the book).

So Marynka won... but she hadn't had the "" ;)

I think italic looks more elegant.

Love / How do Polish men feel about gender equality? [780]

And when we look back into biology, a 60 year old man is still capable of perpetuating the species, while a woman at the age of 60 has been biologically redundant (a burden really) for the last 10 to 15 years on average). Now, how fair is that to men, huh?

Well, a 60 years old men could donate a fair amount of sperm into a sperm bank and he will be redundant as well. Because a role of a 60 years old father is really reduced to donating sperm. The burden of raising a child is still on the mother.

I wanted to add one more thing. Who spends more on the opposite gender? Who is still pressured to pay for dates?

And it's not like men spend all this money on women, so that they feel better about not making as much. Mend spend it to get laid.

Luckily Poland has not been as plagued by Feminism. Which is why Poland has a much lower divorce rate.

It only shows that Poland is still a country, where woman are stuck in the marriages because they can't make it on their own. Nothing really to brag about. I can bet you the divorce rate in the 50ties in the US was much lower as well.

The number of divorces has nothing to do with catholic values.

In case of children playing with toys, there isn't much difference in the value attributed to playing with dolls versus playing with buses or logs.

I would disagree with that. When you look at the girls toys, you will see ovens, babies, strollers, cooking pots, dolls (someone to take care of), vacuum cleaners, etc. When you look at the toys for the boys, you will see some super heroes, cars, space ships, etc. Most of the boys will never drive a race car or chase some evil bastard, however, the toys are designed to keep them in their dreamland, whereas the girls' toys are just a mini version of the reality awaiting them in the future and sort of prepare them for running the household.

Love / Do Polish Women age well? [153]

The major beauty crime older Polish women commit is to dye their hair to unnaturally looking hues of blond, black, or red. It somewhat brings up the wrinkles and makes the woman look even older. I'm all for dying hair, but it has to look like a color made by nature. Also, very often too much make up makes a woman look older instead of younger.

Travel / Why does everyone seem to hate LOT Polish Airlines? [382]

I actually made quite the opposite experience with LOT. I flew twice alone with small kids. Everyone was bending over backwards to make sure we are fine. One of the flight attendants even came to me and offered that if I want to go to the toilet I should call her and she will watch the kids in the meantime. Everyone was also very helpful at the airport. I had the terminal employees come to me and ask if I need help with the luggage and the kids.

I think the in-flight entertainment sucks big time at LOT. Otherwise they are just fine.

Life / Polish home remedies for cold, stomach ache, migraine? [49]

I love my melatonin! It's natural and very safe.

Is it addictive? I have sometimes trouble sleeping, but I'm afraid I will make my problems worse if I start taking something.

My mother also swears by szałwia tea for sore throat.

I read a while ago that szalwia can cause contractions when you are pregnant, so you need to be careful with it at least until closer to the due date. My mother used to drink szalwia tea for the hot flashes, and it was supposed to help.

USA, Canada / Why are Polish Americans mocked in the American media? [226]

I remember some years ago Madonna started taking kabala classes but said that she's not going to switch to Judaism. One commentary in the press said "Jewish people are so relieved". I guess nobody likes nuts in their ranks.

I remember vaguely she got some tattoo in Hebrew that had some spelling mistakes in it or something like that.

Opinions were split evenly.

The problem is that too many people have red light go on when they hear the name of their country. And if it's something negative that red light shines on the whole perception of that situation. I would say in 99% cases it's not the intention to mock the country. The name of the country just happened to be said without further connotations.

Does anyone watch "Real Housewives of New Jersey"? Some Italian fanatics could probably say that the show mocking Italians. To me it's just a bunch of dumb nouveau riches who happened to have Italian ancestors.

How about Vince Vaughn and Vincent D'Onofrio as Polish American brothers in The Break-Up, which also starred Jennifer Aniston?

I loved Vince Vaughn in his Polska/white eagle T-shirts. I don't think it was mocking by any stretch. The characters lived in Chicago, tried to grow their business. I thought that entrepreneur aspect was great.

No i oczywiście nie zapominajmy o placku węgierskim i gulaszu. Nalepsze zdobycze przyjaźni polsko-węgierskiej :)

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

Just about every Polish film regarded as a ‘classic’ features endless scenes of incredible and extremely funny rudeness.

Does anyone remember that one from "Miś"?
