News / John Paul II's Beatification [134]

Wait...will beatification be a drinking...strike that, "celebratory" occasion, or a fasting occasion?

News / John Paul II's Beatification [134]

Oh, no - a funny, little poster from Belgium (by the way - is murdering unborn babies still legal in your
country?) is "not very impressed" with the beatification of John Paul II. What a pity!

Here's my take, it's a Catholic thing. If it makes Catholics happy, what does it have to do with me? You guys mind your own business, and the rest of the pastafarians and I will mind our own business :)

News / Raising Poland's legal drinking age to 21 [95]

Motorcycles are pretty addictive too, and dangerous! Should be banned obviously :)

The 21 and up law is a good idea.

It's done wonders in the US...

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

Honestly, this thread is ridiculous. I smile all the time when in shops, or just talking to people...it it is very well received. I've met plenty of friends through random encounters like that...

Life / Smoking vs. Grilling on Balconies / High Rises in Poland [66]

What is this obsession for BBQ/grilling everything and everywhere? And on balconies if you live in a block of flats - that's desperate and not really thoughtful.

I grilled on my balcony with gas. As long as you don't grill the stuff that's been marinated in tomato based sauces, it's ok. Smells just like someone leaving their window open when cooking. Neighbors never complained. Just ordered an electric smoker for phase2....

USA, Canada / Why are Polish Americans mocked in the American media? [226]

This thread is not about, if we are the main topic of the US daily morning news , but about stereotypes Jewish producers use in entertainment industry. Since I live in Poland it bothers me if I watch an American movie with negative characters being polish (eg. Fugitive)as first and fast example.

It's a reflection of what people see, I don't think it's a secret Jewish conspiracy. My comment just reflects that most people in the US don't really care one way or the other.

Anyway, Poles are mocked in the media because they make up the largest group of Central European immigrants in the US. Same reason that Brits are mocked, Mexicans, Russians, Chinese, Indians, Koreans, rednecks, "East coast elitists", Canadians, Blonds, fat people, blacks, three legged dogs...

BTW I have always thought that ,in US, maids are mostly from Asia or South America .

Most are, but it depends on where you're at...

Yes , we are CEO , lawyers and doctors . If a young woman goes to the states for working sometimes it doesn`t mean that she can only clean . Why isn`t there any polish institution offering to find better job opportunities for Polish immigrants within Polish community?

I'm guessing that most successful Polish women stay in Europe. I know a couple, and none of them have any inclination to move to the US. But then again take a look at the UK or Germany, it's easy to see where the stereotypes come from.

Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

It ended with poster being called a homo. That's embarrassing.

But seriously, 99% of my experiences here have been nothing but positive. NOTHING BUT POSITIVE. You know, if you're a dick in your home country, you'll be a dick everywhere you go. If you have an open mind, you'll quickly realize that Poles, just like everyone else on this earth, are good people. I don't speak Polish (well, not enough...), and the ladies at the meat counter always smile, the people at the bakery smile, the post office people smile, even the people at the tax office smile. Might want to ask, what is YOUR problem? Maybe you're the dick?

News / Donald Tusk's Government of Poland Continues to Oppress Poles [161]

That's why I oppose the oppressive, excessive taxation - it makes it harder for all families to support themselves

Indeed, but only families that are working. However, it should be applied across the board. Not just for families with children.

I wouldn't protest against government's raising VAT and cancelling handouts, if they only lowered other taxes and decreased the idiotic work law, which makes employing people in Poland very costly.

The other option is to drive everyone into bankruptcy. But, I do agree with you.

I agree under one condition - we introduce capitalist taxes and economic freedoms in Poland.

That's the problem with social-democracy when starting out on weak financial footing. The welfare state will eventually bleed itself dry. It's either comfortable safety net at an inflated price for everyone or little to no safety net and allow everyone free will to decide where they want to go. I'm going to side with more economic freedom so that people with ideas, or the desire to work, are properly rewarded.

News / Donald Tusk's Government of Poland Continues to Oppress Poles [161]

Gee, I don't know. But they do, and we can either help those families to raise and educate
their children, or we can say "hey, you poor destitute half-wits, you shouldn't have those kids
in the first place, now you won't be able to feed and clothe them - HA HA!"

Rewarding failure is bad policy. I'm sure that we all have stories, but I've got one here. I live in a pretty nice building. Old construction, high ceilings, good area, all around nice place. A family lives above me in a government owned apartment. It's the only one in the building. These are the folks that keep me up at night, boxing, yelling, lots of kurwa's to be heard. Nearly impossible to kick out, but that's beside the point. Anyway, both parents are drunks, and there are five children. Two older, and three younger. I've gone up there countless times, and ended up having to lay out one of the older ones for beating the crap out of his little brother. Apparently I was the bad guy in that situation according to the authorities, and nothing was done, but again, I digress. Anyway, quick and dirty of it is that the eldest daughter is pregnant with her second bundle of joy. The eldest son has one of his own too. Was this the next generation that you had in mind? It seems the story is repeated over and over again (defiantly not singling out Poland here). It's what happens when you throw token amounts money at people to breed. Do you think those kids are going to end up being much different from their parents? Will that be a net gain for Polish society (and the welfare state), or would the gain be better achieved from a household that can afford to have children and raise them right? Personally, I'll go for the "quality" choice over quantity.

I'm for taking care of the families, it should be done through charity, like paying for private English lessons for two of the kids upstairs. It comes directly from my pocket, and they see that someone is paying for it, and believes in them. It's a direct relationship, much better than handouts.

If there had been fewer children, Harry would have had fewer clients (there would have been
demand for fewer teachers) and would have earned less money.

Negative. If there had been fewer children, more resources could have been spread amongst them, and Harry could charge more money (and thereby attracting the best possible talent) and spend more time with individual students (as they can afford to pay a premium for foreign teachers).

Hey - I know I'm exaggerating, but tax rises pi*s me off, especially if they hit poorest families the most.

Why are poor families having children that they can't afford? It's an obligation, not a right.

If there are less children, Harry could have spent more time with less people producing a higher quality teacher in the end. Quality over quantity.

News / Donald Tusk's Government of Poland Continues to Oppress Poles [161]

The well-being of any society depends on the work of current and future generations.

Because it's a personal decision. Some people think that the well-being of society in the future rests on a high quality workforce. With only limited resources that the state can pilfer from the people, it would seem to make more sense to focus on making future generations wealthier, not larger in number. Having children this day and age is not a civic duty, it's a personal decision. The argument would be a bit less selfish if there were no parent-less children in Poland...

When you take two people, with the same income - one of which has no children

Capital that can be invested in things like businesses that will provide future jobs of those children that you mention.

As the prophet observed: Quit rutting, just for a fuccking day. Let's work out this food/air deal. Then go back to your rutting.

With a little modification, it works over here too.

"Subsidized housing all over Poland filling up with little miracles. Thunk, thunk, thunk. Look at all my little miracles. Filling up my tax payer subsidized flat like a sardine can. Look at them."

No more handouts for parents! Too many cars clogging Polish roads! Hospitals are overloaded! Housing is too expensive! Unemployment is too high!

How about starting to concentrate on quality and not quantity, win!

Food / Eat goulash from a cat and a steak from a dog in Poland! [114]

Why? Because we are so called "thinking creatures" aka. "humans" and we must eat everything we see on our way? Maybe if we would stop and think just a little bit, our asses wouldn't be so huge and our brains so small.

Why? Because no one thinks that they are worth adopting, and the shelter is going to kill them. You don't want them, I don't want them, no one wants them except this Vietnamese guy who wants to do something useful with the meat and probably won't be able to.

That's why they're to be killed, no one wants them.

Travel / Why does everyone seem to hate LOT Polish Airlines? [380]

Nonsense. Cabin crew aren't models or Playboy Bunnies whose role is connected to their looks.

Not in your mind, but you're not writing job descriptions. They are contact points for customers, and as such, hiring criteria can be based on attractiveness. There is nothing in European or Polish law that says otherwise.

It is however illegal in Europe to hire based on age or gender unless there are compelling reasons for a post to be exempt from anti-discrimination laws. And almost since "attractiveness" has no bearing whatsoever on ability to do the job, there would be clear grounds for a civil lawsuit if they only hired "pretty" ones.

Unless it's written into the job description. Same goes for hiring models.

It's a good thing you're not responsible for hiring LOT cabin crew - the company would end up having to pay out soooo much to the plaintiffs' lawyers.

It's not illegal to hire based on attractiveness.

My two cents on LOT... Service is alright, only had mechanical issues twice, and in both cases a second plane was available within an hour. No complaints really.

Food / Eat goulash from a cat and a steak from a dog in Poland! [114]

Well...you can not really cuddle a pig, can't you?

Sure you can. They're very affectionate and love being around people. They make good pillows...and they're great in a smoker.

Back to TFA, this guy wants to use animals that are already being sentenced to death. What's the problem?

Does she eat pork?

yup

This is an interesting point, as I think a chicken is so far removed from what some buys in KFC that a real chicken does not even enter their mind.

bingo. if you've never bled out an animal, you probably shouldn't eat them.

Not what I would have expected ?!

Might have just been how the sausages were made.

Yuk. I understand they also have these in rural Switzerland:

Yea, all that isolation in the mountains plays around with your head after a while...

Anyway, I think most people that try it will probably switch back to poultry, pork, or beef for the return visit.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

.357 is a great round to hunt with, too much penetration in my opinion for the urban environment. For any decent sized round, placement is power.

That should be taught over and over and over again. Shoot with what you're comfortable with, and shoot often to get comfortable with what you rely upon. .40 low recoil hydrashoks, yes please.

This is off topic but I am most accurate with my Smith @ Wesson .22.

I second that, was a great purchase.

Back to the original topic, there is no call for the right to own guns here...which is strange when you consider that whole "fear of the neighbors rolling in" thing...

An interesting little side note, the US has more gun laws on the book now than any other time in history.
