Life / Are Poles mentally more Eastern European or Western European? [170]

Not really - they're roughly on the same latitude.

Athens appears to be about 100km east of Warsaw, so they are clearly more eastern than Poland.

Warsaw: 21° 0′ 39″ E
Athens: 23° 43′ 0″ E
Roughly 3° East. And that doesn't include the vast territory at the east end of the Aegean

you should have a long conversation with Harry, delphi - he will convince you Poland was very independant state back then

He almost had me convinced.

though millions of Russians disagree

They only believe what the Supreme Soviet tells them to believe! Wiki never lies, and they say the earliest documented vodka came from PL.

And remember that Poland has moved somewhat over the years!

Thats a urination contest for a different thread.

In Central Europe, the taste is more towards

Poland is as Central as it gets, and other than beer, vodka it is!

The 'vodka belt' goes from Poland right through to Vladivostok. Very Eastern.

Only because it origininated in Poland and went east!

History / Polish inventors - what have they ever given to the world? [101]

I believe that the OP was trying to cast aspersions on the intelligence of Poles. Given the similiarity in complexity when comparing the Polish language and lets say for example, Quantuum physics, how could he even dare to suggest that the intelligence of Poles is sub-standard?

History / Polish inventors - what have they ever given to the world? [101]

Actually how do you translate it into English?

I think the direct translation is "to MacGyver".

e.g.: "Janusz really MacGyvered that broken television, the reception is better than ever"

Poles would get more credit, if what they came up with were legal.

Come, come now. The card isn't illegal per se, only the use of it. :-)

To be honest, is there a Pole who isn't an inventor of sorts. There is an uncanny ability to make a silk purse from a sow's ear that many Poles possess. The work kombinowac (?) comes to mind...

History / What proportion of the Polish population collaborated with the Nazis? [125]

"I will probably be the first Polish foreign minister in history to say so, but here it is: I fear German power less than I am beginning to fear German inactivity."

Radek Sikorski.

This quote may have been thenews/1/10/Artykul/59667,Sikorski-%E2%80%98European-speech-penned-by-British-diplomat penned by an Englishman....

This must burn you up, Crow...

Love / Polish women are the most beautiful in the world! [1718]

OK, I found some site with supposedly Polish girls, but all eyes say something, language styles differ, the second is a deviation, but intereting one.

Had a Slovenian boss one time who had a penchant for murdering the English language. Legend had it that he coined the phrase: The eyes are the fillet of the sole.

The Eyes girl looks a little young-ish.

Love / Polish women are the most beautiful in the world! [1718]

Or should I look for the real Polish girls? ; )

It would not be out of place in this thread. Why don't we have a look at what a woman finds attractive in another woman. Please post pictures and tell us what makes them attractive....

Starts holding breath....

Genealogy / Polish looks? [1410]

It is not a surprise for me. I thought she might be Turkish.

Why?

Blows my totally uninformed stereotype of Turkish women out of the water....

Love / What strange/unnerving/funny things do your Polish wives do? [153]

mine cannot see an empty plane surface without stacking it with objects...

Reminds me of this pearl....

My wife keeps every receipt, scrap of paper, coupon, pay-stub etc in her purse until she can't find what she is looking for. Then it comes out of the purse and finds it's way into a small (but overflowing) basket on the kitchen counter. When the bits of paper are falling out of the basket, they migrate en-masse (picture a sweeping overhead shot of the plains of Africa) to a different basket in the corner of the living room, all congregating like wildebeests at a shrinking pool of water. Once a year when she really needs to find a document (tax time for example) she will get all upset at me because she can't find what she is looking for. She then spends a day throwing out what she really didn't need in the first place. It is like the culling of a herd. Those that survive make their way back to the kitchen, only to start the breeding process all over again until next year. David Attenborough should make a documentary about this one.....

News / US to deploy Patriot missiles to Poland [405]

He will say one thing and do another, as he has done in the past.

Yeah, like "reaching out in dialogue" to the Al-Quaida enemy, then killing more of them than W. So there is something to like about this guy...

Language / What were the first Polish words and phrases you have learned? [63]

My very non-Polish mother worked in a very multicultural environment when I was a lad. She worked with all sorts of european types on the line making Televisions and Microwave ovens. There was a Polish woman there that taught her a few words, Kur#a among them. Well I guess my dear mother never really appreciated the true spirit of the foreign word, and was prone to drop it around the house on occasion. Guess what wonderful word I learned, but had zero comprehension of it's meaning? Guess what Polish word I first uttered in the presence of my future bride? Went over exceptionally poor, I might add.

Life / Rich man, poor man - today`s Poland [80]

How is the $50 a year going to make a difference?

It is more of an over-used "Statement". Having management ration these items, it is supposed to create an awareness of the times and instill thrift in employee behaviour. More times than not, it is followed by layoffs. It is rare to see really creative cost cutting measures than already mentioned. Those that are able to think outside the box are to be envied and emulated.

Life / Why is circumcision not practiced in Poland? [701]

It's disgusting that most Polish men are uncircumcised.

A 2002 review by Boyle et al. stated that "the genitally intact male has thousands of fine touch receptors and other highly erogenous nerve endings—many of which are lost to circumcision, with an inevitable reduction in sexual sensation experienced by circumcised males."

So you are for circumcision, even at the expense of sexual sensation reduction?
