Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

THIS IS RIDICULOUS.

Absolutely, so my advise is have a sense of humour and answer ridiculously.
There are very many good posters on this forum, I have learned to skip a lot of the more negative/general/uneducated/or just hateful people's posts and enjoy the rest of the forum.

It's all about what you allow yourself to see and like the newspapers, bad news sells better.

My French version's been deleted - have to write in English.
It's as simple as that Ced

? That doesn't make sence.
This forum is in English and you break the rules so that means people make huge stupid generalisations?
Nope, I don't understand what you are saying.

History / Polish Atlantis (pre-war Warsaw, Poland in pictures). [38]

Spiders web on the raised gable and the door, I wonder if are they the same building?

Yes they are.

Street after street, block after block, house after house...

It was a crazy thing to do.

History / Polish Atlantis (pre-war Warsaw, Poland in pictures). [38]

Here are some great photos of some buidings in Warsaw, Before and After, from the poster Pawian.
Polish architecture

I was going to ask about the degree of damage in smaller towns and did larger places get better treatment in rebuilding.

I would imagine the bigger cities got the most attention because of the population.
But Warsaw was totalled, so it needed more attention than most, I think.

Should they not work on Friday afternoon and on Saturday instead, like religious Jews do?

i used to work in Canary Wharf in London, we got Saturdays off because of that, worked Sundays though.

There are plenty of reasons for foreigners to hate Poland

I don't think so, hate is a too strong a word.

I can't see how not working on Sundays can be among them.

Yep.

I'm "working" today

I always wondered, what if you enjoy your 'work' is it still work?

generally there is a lot of complaining about other nations on this site, usually the US to be honest and on other occassions Russia and the UK.

I don't think people complain enough about Switzerland.
I was trying to choose a country to hate and I came to the conclusion Switzerland needs a bit of a kicking, very nice mountains though.

Life / Why are so many Polish People rude on the internet? [96]

People? rude? on the internet? Polish people no less?
Well I have never heard of such a ridiculous thing in my life!

I told them where they could stick it if they wouldn't let me finish reading out the question to the four quiz teams.

Have a drink and get some good loving.

Were there any grains close to the place?

Not really no, it was in the middle of a forest in the Chełm mountain in Myslenice, south of Krakow.
There wasn't a field around for kilometres.

Tettigoniidae or better known as crickets (wiki) to you and me.

Tettigoniids may be distinguished from grasshoppers by the length of their filamentous antennae, which may exceed their own body length, while grasshoppers' antennae are always relatively short and thickened.

The males provide a nuptial gift for the females in the form of a spermatophylax, a body attached to the males' spermatophore which is consumed by the female. The function of the spermatophylax is to increase the attachment time of the males' spermatophoreand thereby increase his paternity. [1]

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tettigoniidae
:)

Cricket in Polish is swierszcz.

Grasshopper directly translates to "field horse" konik polny :)

Cerambycidae

Longhorn beetle (wiki)

The longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae; also known as long-horned beetles or, more archaically, longicorns) are a cosmopolitan family of beetles, typically characterized byextremely long antennae, which are often as long as or longer than the beetle's body.

Maybe not.

Carabidae

Ground beetle

This is a large family, with more than 40,000 species worldwide, approximately 2,000 of which are found in North America and 2,700 in Europe.[1]

Could very well be, it had wings but did not use them. It was black and on the ground not near much water and no huge amounts of big dung around.

constituting about 25% of all known life-forms.[1] 40% of all described insect species are beetles (about 350,000 species[1]),

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beetle

So getting it down from 350,000 different species to only 2,700 is pretty good.
I had no idea beetles rule the world, what a human I am.

------------------------------------------------------------

Beetle in Polish is Żuk.

Any beetle experts here....?

"Beetles, under the class known as Coleoptera, are believed to make up at least quarter of the animal kingdom. Beetles are the largest group of animals, representing one fifth of all known living organisms and one fourth of all animals. Almost half of all living beetles are known as weevils under the family known as Curculionidae. It is believed that the number of species of beetles range from approximately 250,000 to 350,000."

From here: hypertextbook.com/facts/2001/KeithSingh.shtml
I think an expert might have trouble too.

Weasels , stoats , and Minks all look pretty similar , don,t know how you tell the difference , other than minks are usually black....i think..?

It was easy, I saw the guy and googled it and he looked exactly like the photo from Wiki I posted :)

They are to be found in most moutanious streams togedher with trout and grayling.

Yes, maybe, many people here fish for trout.
Thanks for the info

weasels are very slim and significantly smaller than stoats and minks

Yes, I have seen a white mink in a cage in Ireland, very beautiful and very angry because of the cage.

In the English language a "weasel" is something negative to call someone.
I have no idea why but it means a sneaky person who lies an cheats.

what does rooms actually mean Living room+bedroom(s).

If it is in the Polish language, rooms means bedrooms plus living room.
So if it is a three roomed apartment, it should have two bedrooms.

Also, I am trying to get my head around Sq mtrs,

There are lots of free conversion programs on the net, like this one
onlineconversion.com

In the UK we go by individual room measurements, with normally a plan.

It is common practice here to get a plan before you even see the apartment.
This will have the room sizes on it.

So what is shoebox size

Here is a very rough calculation.

15-25 shoebox size. (studio).
40-50 m2 1 bed.
50-60 m2 2 bed.
70-90 m2 3 bed.
130 + penthouse.

Happy hunting!.

History / Communism fell 20 years ago, Poland led the fight since WW2 [339]

You know the way during communism,
everyone had a job, everyone was at least promised a flat (usually in a tower block?) and a car.
Did those things every materialise?, I mean how did you "get" a car, I heard you were put on a waiting list and if you pledged a legions to the communist party.

You would be bumped up the list, getting you closer to the top and therefore closer to having a car, is that how it worked?.

Also if you reported any non-communist activity, you got privileges?.
Privileges in communism for party members? (sounds paradoxical).

Also I am interested in when the communists devalued the Zloty on day, if you had 1000 zloty in the bank, the next day you would have 10, since then people have not trusted the banks, perhaps that is why Poland is one of the lowest mortgage takers in Europe.

Please correct me if I am wrong on any of these issues.

When i was a kid in Ireland i used to catch pinkeens (spelling?), Little fish, they were kind of pink and very small.
Just a fond memory.

Here are some small fish in Poland that look kind of link pinkeens (except the colour). What are they? Are they baby fish?.

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

It is an English thing to cue politely and suffer in silence.
How did Pink Floyd put it "Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way ".
Well not in London or anywhere else i have been in England, now come to mention it.
But I was too busy going about my business to bother about what the "aborigines" were doing....

When did you collect such nice ration cards?

I did not collect them, this is a photo I took when I was on a tour of Nowa Huta. I just thought they would fit this thread and what you are discussing.

There were also some very interesting communist promotional propaganda videos.

Wojciech Jaruzelski declaring martial law

Didn't Wojciech Jaruzelski, send secret letters to the Soviet Union, asking for help, to "control" the Solidarity movement?.
The U.S.S.R. said no and Jaruzelski declared martial law, telling the lie, that he was doing this to "protect" the Polish people against Soviet attack from the U.S.S.R?.

the shocking brutality of the communist regime who fought against its own peoples

It is a very painful issue because they were all Polish.

I have heard that they were all on hard drugs, amphetamine and others kinds of mind altering drugs, is this true?.
Civil war is the worst kind, brother against brother.

IIRC, Schools

What does IIRC mean?.

While the martial law was a really a dark period in our latest history its performance differed in main urban areas and in the country side, where it wasn't such arduous...

Could you explain more, please, as I do not fully understand what you mean.

Thanks again Pawian, keep up the good work.
