What sane investor will want to put their money in a country where they know the courts are simply an extension of the governmnet and if they don't rule the way the government wants then they'll be replaced? That is serious third world politics dud and YOU'RE IN FAVOR OF IT!

My friend in that situation was just asked to declare how much she had earned.

That's probably how they would usually handle it most of the time. Especially if the person just started paying up. On the other hand they do have the right to do everything Dominic described (the more a person challenged them the more likely that is to happen I imagine).

If by Hilarious you mean 'terrifying to think that this mentally deranged dwarf is the most powerful political figure in the country' then yes, a barrel of laughs.

Would this stand as a form of libel (since he accused the opposition of 'murdering' his brother)?

I don't think he's ever actually used those words before (close but always maintained plausible deniability) I really think he'll regret opening up that particular can of worms.

Where I live (Prussianized Wielkopolska) the really wealthy people took pains to _not_ flaunt their wealth. There were signs if you knew how to look for them but it was much less 'in your face' than the more Russified Varsovians or Austrianized Krakovians...

That's fallen off a bit with the inevitable homogenization that's happened over the last 25 years but is still present.

Take an interpreter along and ask any Pole who has had the experience. Stand outside the court bldg at Leszno and chat up people leaving it

I don't think most people leaving courthouses in any country will be very happy as a general rule, that's not a very good way of gathering data about desirable reforms...

I was referring to the screaming, shouting, howling, scuffling and overall mad-dog hysteria that went on outside the Sejm

Didn't see that, I saw people upset at government actions making use of the constitutionally guaranteed (for the time being at any rate) right to protest government action that they think is wrong.

Calling it hysteria and anarchy stinks of someone swallowing a party line, hook and sinker.

the first step is to admit there's a problem and that sometimes diversity for its own sake is not an absolute good

as for detoxifying islamic theology - that's not a job that you or I can do anything about, only muslims can do that, and there are even some reasonable imams but they get harassed/threatened by the violent minority (that is de facto supported by the 'moderate' majority).

There's not a single European country that wants more muslim immigration, in Europe the first step is for governments to recognize and act on that (not by telling the majority that they're wrong). Stopping the inflow to a trickle of highly educated would be a start.

ISIS doesn't represent the whole of Islam

They represent a very literal version which almost no 'moderate' muslims know how to argue against because virtually all modern muslim theology is based on the doctrine of koranic literalism.

Christians and Jews have mostly abandoned literalism*, but muslims haven't and it's why the muslim world lags so badly socially, politically and intellectually.

You can actually plot the decline of Islamic achievement when the doctrine of literalism decisively won a theological struggle. they turned away from science and most have yet to find their way back.

*it's just small freaky subsets, none of which are really mainstream

Actually the only real criteria are a Polish passport or tax bill (putting your money where your big mouth is).

Nope, the profile is clear. They blow off education in favor of drugs and partying and idle hopes of becoming a gangster (respect for secular education is low among muslim communities in Europe so the paretns don't mind them blowing off school) then become disillusioned with their choices, get back to religion (which they'd previously ignored) in a search for meaning and fall prey to radical imams. The radicalization is the result of their own, earlier poor life choices.

Liberals who are in favor of multiculturalism (or give lip service to same) don't care, as long as they can brag about how tolerant they are the human toll of immigrant failure doesn't really bother them (if anything they're glad as it's less competition for the dwindling number of jobs....).
