Iran has repeatedly spoken about the idea of erasing Israel from the map.... that tends to dilute support.

Similar with Gazans... does anyone doubt that they'd kill all the Jews in Israel if they were able? Again, not the most sympathetic.

On the other hand, Ukrainian rhetoric toward russia was mostly non-existent or simply wishes for russia to vacate internationally recognized Ukrainian land (and/or the general desire to move away from the russian language).

In the modern world it does seem to have a dumbing down effect on a population.

Compare any two comprable populations that differ primarily by one being mostly muslim

Indians vs Pakistanis in the UK (the former do well, the latter are kind of a disaster)

Christian vs Muslim Lebanese (the former are one of the highest achieving groups in the world, the latter are mired in dysfunction)

why "so-called"?

The Bill of Rights prevents the government from doing certain things, like naming an official religion.

One of those areas that the Federal Government cannot legislate is restrictions on gun ownership.

The US Supreme Court (ultimate arbiter of what the Constitution does and does not mean) has ruled that this is not limited to militias regulated by the government.

More likely it's lingering effect of the frontier experience. Generations of people pushing across the continent mean that people on the frontier had to deal with not having state institutions at ready disposal. They had to be able to defend themselves from various dangers... (including others who were on the frontier).

The frontier experience did more to shape American national character than any other single event or process and is the root of many, many things that mystify Europeans.

While here.... why is there such a long tradition of crappy buildings in the UK?

Years ago I saw a documentary on the social housing movement in the UK (mainly England) after WWII and was shocked at how shabby the construction was.... so it's no surprise many more or less collapsed and/or had to be taken down.

Meanwhile buildings in Poland built around the same time are still very liveable..

In the US the problem with social housing was people who didn't know how to take care of things breaking things through ignorance and/or apathy and/or malice (seems to have been an issue in the UK as well). Again much, much less of that in Poland.
