News / Austria's swing to the far right on Poland? [229]

proudly displaying the flag of slavery

An exaggeration, the 'confederate flag' was not used by the confederacy (it was a component of a couple of flags but the flag as it exists now was not a thing until the 20th century).

At most it's a flag of segregation, bad enough, but accuracy matters.

The number of white native born American gun related murders is higher than all the deaths in the West from terrorism.

Huh? Most white native born gun deaths in the US are suicides (technically illegal so categorized as 'gun crime'). Haven't you ever heard of the Smith & Wesson Retirement Plan?

Law / Work permit + national visa in Poland for India citizen [91]

why so many of the people in, for example Kuwait, propping up the vile dictatorship are not Kuwaiti citizens

That's true all through the Gulf countries where the local populations are lazy and work shy (they are essentially modern slavery cultures where work is seen as degrading). OT but I wonder where the current situation in Saudi is headed....

No, what's needed is streamlining of the existing processes and 'encouraging' countries to rapidly accept their citizens who have failed the asylum process

That's a very good idea but the EU at present as far too reactive and passive to even think about telling third world countries 'No!'. The countries would call them racists and colonialists and they'd fold faster than the Flash on laundry day.

Remind is whether you work in your own country.

Whether you work in your own country is as bad a definition of 'remind' as I've ever seen..... But the employment situation is certainly of interest. There are at present many jobs in Poland to be had but they don't pay enough for a person to be able to make long term life plans so not that many people want to do them. So rather than raise wages to make the jobs worth taking for locals the classic neoliberal solution is to import cheap labor (and getting taxpayers to pay for the problems that that causes).

Poland has certainly benefitted from being a source of cheap labor so accepting some degree of cheap labor in return seems fair, the question is how much?

the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1967 protocol to that convention

See? That's the problem they are hopelessly out of date given the changes made in the world since then. They need drastic overhauling and a quick way to do that is for countries to refuse to get on board with their ancient and rickety (by now largely dysfunctional) rules.

wanting genuine refugees to be treated decently, in accordance with UN treaties and with Christian moral codes, does not make you a leftist

No, it's being unwilling or unable to distinguish genuine refugees fleeing war and persecution from opportunistic bounders that makes you a leftist. For every real refugee that's come to Europe in the last ten years there are probably 10 economic migrants.

I see more danger in the world today from Trump, Putin and Erdogan than I do from any migrants or from what you appallingly refer to as 7th century cultures

They're both dangers, and it's not the 7th century that's the danger, it's the very modern Saudi inspired Sunni convergence to fundamentalist values that is the problem. Both the rise of third world style Big Man leaders (Trump, Putin, Erdogan) and politicized Islam are symptoms of failure to adapt to modernity.

I think Austrians are reacting AWAY from mainstream liberalism

No pendulum swings in one direction forever.... what we're witnessing now is the return to the other direction after 50 or so years of unfettered (often undisciplined and unhinged) progressivism.

The best way to limit the damage to pet projects is to get out in front of it instead of trying to keep pulling the pendulum after it's reached its peak....

News / Austria's swing to the far right on Poland? [229]

A referendum held in Catalonia in 2014 indicated that 92% of the 2.3 million voters supported Catalonia's transformation into a state.

That was a phony referendum designed to keep those against independence out. In anonymous polling it's never gotten over 50%.

I'd saw laws were meant to be broken only to be reformed later - i.e. civil rights movement, females being able to drive in Saudi Arabia, etc.

that only works when they cannot be reformed, not the case in Spain. The independistes (mostly SJWS and soys and crooks) just don't want to bother with actually doing the work.

suppressing Catalonian referendum

The Spanish constitution (approved by an absolute majority of eligible voters in Catalonia) forbid the referendum.

If a province can simply opt out then there is no rule of law, just rule of mob and strongman (which Spain has done much to escape the Catalan separatists are trying to destroy the rule of law and replace it with the rule of an angry mob which has never represented the majority).

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

Because Węgorek sounds like wegorz, not like robak or glista

not to mention dżdżownica (one of my favorite words for weirdness)

Maybe Węgorek came from fishermen who specialized in catching eels? Or cooks? How long has smoked eel been a delicacy in northern Poland?

News / Poland on course to end European winter/summer time [19]

It's not cancelling DST. It's extending DST onto the whole year.

I actually like that idea, the early dark is the main thing I dislike in the winter. Yes, cold and snow and ice are also pretty terrible but I got used to the cold much quicker than I got used to it getting pictch black at 17.00...

News / Poland on course to end European winter/summer time [19]

The benefits of DST are negligible

Maybe

Its origins lie in times when electric light was not universal, and when it saved considerable amounts of energy

How? In northern Europe it doesn't seem to affect energy use at all since for most of DST it gets light before people get up and stays light after they would go to bed

If anything I think having DST all year round would save a little more in the winter

Am I missing something?

News / Austria's swing to the far right on Poland? [229]

The problem is there isn't a credible "moderate right" party on the political scene yet-

The problem is that departing from orthodoxy (that European countries must allow in and adapt to large numbers of middle eastern and african immigrants) is enough for the party to be labelled 'extreme'.

When did the idea that countries should prioritize the needs of citizens over migrants become so radical?

It seems that celebrations and pronouncements about the end of the right on the occasion of the election of a leftist president in Austria were.... premature?

As I predicted, nationalists are getting better in their presentation which makes (among other things) those who denounce them look unbalanced. The EU leadership is committed to a social and economic model that cannot work. Of course young people will turn away from it and freak the elders out.

I don't foresee any immediate or significant repurcussions for Poland (besides distracting the EU leadership away from worrying about Poland to worry about Austria.).

Language / Polish language would look better written in Cyrillic Script? [212]

Before it became part of the USSR Belarussian had been often written in both Latin and Cyrillic (probably more often latin). That Latin looked czech based (but with ł) wtih very weird vowels (since vowel changes are marked in the script unlike Russian).

Ukrainian also had a latin alphabet at one time but it never caught on widely (looked too much like Polish and writing Ukrainian in a Polish style alphabet makes it look like a Polish dialect rather than a separate langauge.....

The first slavic language written in latin script is apparently Slovenian (IIRC)

Yes, I agree dhat sum reform of English spelling woudn't be too hard to acheve and woud make dhe process ov lerning to reed and rite much eesier for both nativ and non-nativ speekers. Won problem is dhat dhose dhat hav already lerned don't want tu make things eesier for dhose after dhem...

I also think it woud bee nice iff evry slavic language had both latin and cyrillic script versions

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

This has been explained to you in depth many times previously.

You haven't 'explained' it, you simply keep repeating it. I don't believe it.

If someone doesn't want an abortion I certainly think they should not be compelled to have one. I don't want to force other people to follow my moral judgements. You do.

It boils down to the Christians opinion vs. the non-Christians opinion.

Yes, in this case the Christians want to force people to follow their beliefs. Intolerant!

Only salvation

There is no such thing, except at the personal ethical level.

Religion has no place in the discussion on the moral status of fetuses. Enacting laws on purely religious grounds is a violation of the separation of church and state.

a fetus has no consciousness, so aborting one has less consequences than paying people to give birth to corpses..... hideous!

News / Tusk turning his back to idea about Intermarium (New Commonwealth), seeing only EU as future for Poland [124]

I suggest you run that by the local population - would they prefer some Turks or Iraqis cleaning their hotels

Well it's not like Putin is against muslim immigration (a fact many of his supporters try to ignore or rationalize away) there has been a bunch of immigration to Moscow (for example) by muslims from the caucasus and central asia and Putin does nothing to stop it.

Poland

Oh yeah, he's a defender of Chrisitan values...

Putin is awesome.

Come back to Poland and tell people that. Please.

the last standing power that is resisting destruction of Christianity, the traditional family unit, patriotism, etc

That is hilarious. Church going is all but non-existent in Russia and divorce and adultery are rife and the drug abuse and HIV rates are off the charts. And his patriotism is made up of aggression against supposed enemies (hint: Poland is an enemy to him).

Plus the guy has balls of steel

I wonder sometimes what type of Pole helped sell.the country out to the CCCP..... ones like you who respect 'balls of steel' over progress and western civilization.

America is neither a country nor a nation. It is simply a large territory inhabited by immigrants from various countries

No. America was founded and created by settlers and pioneers. The immigrants came later. The idea that it is a country founded on immigration is a very new (and very mistaken) idea.

What is called the American people is not a qualitatively organic or self-determination, but an artificial conglomerate

blah blah blah Serbo-Russki communist boilerplate propaganda.

America was (until the arrival of 'diversity' and 'multiculturalism' was a cohesive and coherent cultural and language community, quite distinct from other countries.
