Iran are wrong to police clothing, however Euroepan countries do to a lesser extent (France is unpleasant about it) and clothing does tend to suit weather, etc. Some of the differences are good ones. Modern western clothing is based largely on English urban wear and local differences are nice.

Ironically, you used to be able to get decent lamb kebabs. When they were actually hand done by people from countries where lamb is popular. Now the huge slabs of mystery meat just come from Makro or Selgros. There's a big difference in price between the better and the worse ones too.

The worst kebab I've ever eaten was just by the way in to Stogi Beach in Gdansk. It had a huge sign saying "Najlepsze kebaby w mieście". The 'kebab' was gristly pork with surowka, mayonnaise and ketchup.

And chips? I asked (in Polish) a waitress (the OKish place at the bottom of Mickiewicza by the film school, the one that does big cocktails) if the chips were real or frozen. Her reply? "As far as I know, all chips are always frozen"!!!

No. People used to be able to get sausages from an Irish guy in Mokotów who made them however his neighbours grassed him up to Sanepid out of spite.


That's a fair call. Police in some parts of southern Poland said there was a massive drop in crime because so many of the local young Buraki left after 2004.

Try a game I used to play. Works on teams and the WKD. Close your eyes and see if you can count to ten before seeing graffiti. It rarely reaches about five.


The opposite of me though inwazji Urzynow when I first came decades ago (a much smaller place then) and in Dolny Mokotów for several years. Some of the parts just beyond Mordor and also bits of Stegny are graffiti central.

There were courses for educated unemployed and one of the possibilities was learning to be a language trainer. I employed a guy (I'd actually known before; he was a journalist but had worked for 20 years in the same niche magazine and didn't really have transferable skills when the magazine went bust) who'd done such a course. It was life changing for him. Not a great teacher however sadly for so many it's just a means to an end.


Culture shock. It comes and goes.

It is very weird. I knew someone whose brother moved to London and used to take a crate of Coca Cola back from Poland on each visit.


The irony is that very few of the Polish shops are run by Poles and most are a sort of pyramid scam.

Depends. Liverpool is closer to Warsaw than Szczecin is. 2.5 hours on the plane v. a day on the train.
