History / Kielce Pogrom - new findings by IPN [42]

rogue author Normal Finkelstein's

heh that tells a thing or two - Norman Finkelstein is a son of holocaust survivors btw

as far as I can remember you said once that the Germans built the Holocaust machine in Poland because Poles were somehow assisting them to kill Jews (while there were instances of such it was FAAAR from universal - read the Secret City by Gunnar Paulsson - it tells the story of Jews in Warsaw during the WWII)

Genealogy / SKI...SKY...ZKI...Polish surname endings [38]

Is there a connection with the two names?

Brzeziński means "of/from Brzezin/Brzeziny/Brzezina" where Brzezin etc are place names - the thing is there are hundreds of places with the names Brzezin/Brzezina/Brzeziny and without a thoruogh genealogy search there is no way of telling which one of those plentiful places your ancestors come from

Brzeziński is a perfectly Polish surname (meaning not a name that would indicate your ancestors were Jewish) - however sometimes Polish Jews bore typically Polish surnames - but if your family is Catholic the probability that your ancestors were Jewish is very low

the only famous person I know that bore the name is Zbigniew Brzezinski who is a Polish American - no wealthy aristocracy were Brzezinskis from my knowledge of the Polish history - having said that it is quite possible that your family were part of the nobility but I wouldn't count on finding some wealthy distant Polish cousins: the nobility in Poland at times comprised almost 10 per cent of the general population and hordes of them were dirt poor (for example they had a nobility title but worked their own land (had no serfs))

oh sorry - I just realized you said Brzezinski is not your birth name - scratch the parts where I said "your ancestors" then

Life / Has feminism and lesbianism progressed in Poland? [645]

That's not true and we don't need to go far to look for evidence.

I didn't even think of survival in such terms - I meant survival as getting new generations and not dying out - as far as I know our science hasn't devised parthenogenesis as yet

The Duda administration's trying to successfully disqualify such future claims as unjustified.

huh? could you rephrase it so I could actually understand it

Language / About usage of the special Polish letters: ą ć ę ł ń ó ś ż ź [28]

it's not the presence of those letters, that makes it hard to find a word in a dictionary

there is a web dictionary of Polish that has plenty of forms of Polish words ( here: sjp.pl) - the thing is the defintions are in Polish and the various forms of words are not explained grammatically (which grammatical case (case as in declination) or tense or other categories the word forms belong to) - the basic form is just stated -

of course it still can be of some help for learners of Polish

well I tried sjp.pl a bit and well: it's flawed more than I thought

how am I supposed to know you mean air polution when you write 'smog' - if we are at it the higher the smokestack (and larger power plants have them pretty high) the more spread out is the polution they generate (which means it is actually diluted) - also power plant fumes contain almost no soot (becuase of their particular technology of burning coal)

ogrzewanie indywidualne w budynkach mieszkalnych jest odpowiedzialne za 40% emisji pyłu PM10

it is worth mentioning that in unfavourable weather conditions those dust particles remain near the ground (and also often near their source) as opposed to those emitted by electric plant fumes

trying to make us believe they are completely harmless.

be so kind and don't put words in my mouth - I never said coal powered electric plants are harmless - I however stand by the statement that they are not significantly contributing to the phenomenon of smog because their smokestacks are so high that they diffuse dust polution over vast areas

@pawian

also: washing your dishes and clothes polutes the environment (washing powder and washing liquids contains phosphates or other phosphorus compounds and surfactants (substancje powierzchniowo czynne) which are not friendly to aquatic environments and cause algae blooms in the Baltic - does it stop you from using them?

also: do you imagine contemporary agriculture without fertilizers

also: farm animals (especially cows) are a major source of methane - does it stop you from buying meat?

btw your article (the one claiming the health cost of coal electricity generation) does not say that smog is caused by power plants burning coal - and well how can you rely on their quotes if their claim that the cost is between 13 and 34 billion PLN per annum (mogli se z sufitu wziąć a czemu by nie)

does not say that smog

sorry - actually there is a mention of energy sector being a big source of the dust - the thing is coal power plants have high smokestacks which dillutes the dust throughout a big area and is not a considerable source of smog

ok an excerpt from the article you posted pawian:

in other words they have attributed the suspected health cost of all forms of coal burning to coal power plants completely ignoring small scale sources (which if you ask me should be considered as the more dangerous)

@pawian

you are funny, to be honest - electrofiltres can have 99 per cent effectiveness for particles of 1 micrometer size - they are less and less effective the lower the size of the dust - and no coal power plants are not responsible for smog - just read up on the subject instead of trying to be on top of the game

and no coal technology will never be 100 per cent clean - neither is gasoline burning despite using expensive catalizators on vehicles

Tell us, please coz we crave for this knowledge

look - let's take cigarette filtres do they stop all harmful substance from getting into your lungs while smoking - they don't even stop all tar from getting there - electrofilters work on electrostatic principle and they don't stop all dust from getting out of the stack simple as that - still they are not 100 per cent effective (especially with miniscule particles) - neither are methods of catching sulphur oxides from the fumes

Gumi, where are your fekking filters???? hahahaha

I know you don't understand electrofiltres - btw where is your source talking about smog? :)

btw electrofiltres are intalled on all newer power plants smokestacks - you just don't understand how they work

they don`t contribute any pollution to the environment. :):):)

you never heard of electrofiltres - you poor pawian

you also never heard that coal is ground to produce dust for energy generation - yeah you smog expert

you also never heard of wet methods of desulfuring of fumes - well you should learn a bit more then

there is also the environmental proble

there is also a question of energy safety and general safety - we HAVE coal - we could switch energy generating to natural gas but we would have to import it - as for nuclear energy: people have concerns after the Chernobyl

90.000 deaths each year due to smog pollution

smog is not created by electric power plants but by households burning coal (and to a lesser extent by cars especially diesels) - my family uses coal to heat our home - you know why? : it's has been the cheapest method so far (we don't have access to gas grid as well - if we were connected to gas grid it would probably change our outlook on heating)

Those are not viable sources of the energy

there is also the environmental problem with wind turbines: they kill birds and migrating bats

quite informative site on hydrogen storage: energy.gov/eere/fuelcells/hydrogen-storage

News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1158]

You mean we are doomed to use coal till the last days of our lives???

optimal wind turbines wind regime is 15 to 20 km/h - in Poland the wind blows typically at 4 km per hour - when the wind is too strong the wind turbines shut down automatically (and if they fail to they are bound for a catastrophe - there has been such catastrophes already)

also there are so far no practical methods of storing electricity - one method that could store the excess energy could be water electrolysis that produces hydrogen which can be used later for electricity generation - as far as I know there are no such commercial installations though - and as far as I know storing large quantities of hydrogen is pretty dangerous

also the life of a wind turbine is about 20 years - in the past it was merely 15 years and the techology was more expensive to the point that at some locations the turbines failed to return the investment

as for solar energy you probably noticed that Poland is not the most sunny place on Earth

Another lie by PiS

a quote from wikipedia on the ETS system:
Od reformy strukturalnej dyrektywy ETS, przyjętej w Pakiecie Energetyczno-Klimatycznym 12 grudnia 2008 przez kraje Unii Europejskiej[7], obowiązuje zakup uprawnień do emisji CO2 (EUA) na giełdzie przez firmy przemysłu energochłonnego i wytwarzania energii elektrycznej po wykorzystaniu przyznanej puli uprawnień przyznanym Państwom Członkowskim UE[8

in other words it was the PO-PSL government who agreed to free trading (which allows speculation) with the emission rights

I only now that PiS passed the laws which practically blocked the construction of wind turbines by individual investors and companies.

it was the same PiS government that devised a pretty big programme of subsidies to solar energy

there are reasons why PiS doesn't want wind and solar energy to become the majority of energy sources - one: solar and wind energy are not reliable; two: Polish energy grid is not adapted to high output fluctuations and the cost to changing the grid is overwhelming (even Germans with their sophisticated and updated energy grid begged Poland to build an electricity bridge so that they can send their electricity somewhere when their own grid is overburdened)

as for wind energy: wind energy generation generates infrasounds that can cause serious health problems if you live somewhere where a resonance take place in the infrasound frequencies

regulations which rightist PIS have known about for a long time and accepted long ago. Ha!

regulation that would require probably leaving the EU to ammend - and that the previous PO government agreed to not PiS

where the money went - I can tell you - road and railroad infrastructure among others - also the social spending that you so much detest contributed to steady economic growth and general prosperity
