Travel / What is the weather like in Poland where you are now? [211]

Anyone tried?

I actually trained as a climatologist but have never practiced.

Poland weather would be one of the easier to predict but still incredibly difficult with any accuracy over 4 or 5 days modelling has helped enormously.

Can you imagine it? A man sentencing his brother to death?

War within war, uncivil war the worst possible:(

History / Polish historical myths - to break or not to break them? [257]

Des

If the wings did have a real military purpose, beyond intimidation of the enemy, it must have been to prevent Tartar lassoes from encircling the Hussar, and to anchor him to the saddle if one did, and alot of feathers wouldn't have been necessary for this.

The article suggests that this myth comes from later historians suggesting reasons for wings which are not mentioned in contemporaneous records (16th Cent.).

It seems to be a self fulfilling mythic tradition within the Hussars starting with painted feathers on shields developing later some plumage and so on.

Its very convincing and well referenced.

Why didn`t you read my posts I have given some sources .

I'm about half way through Głębowicz's article it’s extremely Interesting far from a scribble but difficult for me.

Edit

The view ( less significant) and the noise together .

That’s not what the article says, the author reports eye witness accounts describing tactics to frighten horses.

Monia I'm not disputing that the Hussars were marvellous soldiers winning lots of battles and so on. Did they wear these wings in battle? I doubt it, once I have read the article that Pawian has paraphrased for us, I will have a little more knowledge to ruminate upon.

The thread is about historical myths everyone assumes that the Hussars charged (or whatever) wearing these wings that is a myth the truth is probably that the battles were won wingless. The wings were attached for parade.

History / Polish historical myths - to break or not to break them? [257]

It just shows, how ignorant this Mr. Who Knows Him is .

Who Witold Głębowicz the author?

I don't have time (or knowledge) to read the piece now. I will say however that there seems to be a reasonable bibliography and Pawian doesn't have a history of posting rubbish. It's hard to assume that the author his sources and the poster Pawian are all wrong.

I'm not a horseman (except Arkle) but I would imagine these "wings" would make it difficult to manoeuvre in battle.

News / Polish immigrants contribute to the world [42]

What about music.

The Polish American Pee Wee King who co wrote the Tennessee Waltz with an unmistakable mazurka feel.

listen to the end of this cover version for the mazurka.

Edit

Our local NC media doesn't say anything about you guys either

They dont play C+W below the smith and wesson line?
tarniusmusic.com/Country/MichaelLonstar/WhatsThisCountryThing

Lonstar is the only Polish artist to date to have ever appeared on stage the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, in 1989 and again in 1990. That year he also sang at the Summer Lights Festival at the invitation from the Nashville Songwriters Association and hosted the New Country Seminar at the Lone Star Roadhouse in New York City, sharing stage with Kevin Welch and Mary-Chapin Carpenter.

Heres something a bit naff........but in a military state........no Lonstar.

PS Hate this kind of C+W.

Food / Does Poland have any similar beers to guinness? [22]

new Polish porter called Belfast.

Does it leave a bitter taste that lasts for generations?:)

I'd choose a nice lager any day.

I much prefer dark beers though light beers are fine after some physical work. There is nothing better than a few hours splitting logs followed by a cold one.

Porters ans stouts are an acquired taste like choosing olives over cherries.

Love / How do Polish men feel about gender equality? [780]

with you everything must indeed be 'relative'

Why do you build me up buttercup just to let me down?

I suppose that a crank site is one you don't agree with.

A crank site is one that suggests that Canada is ruled by acorn worshipers or whatever it was that I read when I made the mistake of opening one of your links.

Not to worry, there are plenty of beta males like you.

There you go again "I'm an alpha male you know" well that is not a description one can self apply.

Love / How do Polish men feel about gender equality? [780]

you try to use 'shaming' language

You use it, then feign shock when its directed at you. You use it when you are not telling us all how much of an Alpha male you are, something that alpha males feel the need to do

That's not an argument and it's noticeable that you did not respond to any specific facts or links I've posted on this subject which affects all of society

You post links from crank sites or skewed reporting yet ignore everything but your own mantra.

Love / How do Polish men feel about gender equality? [780]

now that young unmarried urban women outearn men (despite men still doing the dangerous jobs)

This is a crock, firstly most young unmarried urban women earn the same as cleaners and waitresses this aint Friends. Young unmarried urban women professionals earn the same as the equivalent group of males, Overall women earn less.

Dangerous jobs? Whats more dangerous than street walking......Big link to Long Island.

One actually (I am not making this up!) smacked my hand because she was angry at me.

That is not typical behaviour for Americans.
I know there are a lot of gendernauts using academia nad their intelligence to bully people and filling a lot of air time, the same is true of almost all thinkers. The focus is on this gender issue because it’s the perfect subject for almost any situation.

Only if your car-pool partner also doctrinaires about communism.

Or equally if I wanted to make another redundant point.

Sorry Magda but that appears to be not correct, certainly there are a lot of people making a living from the equality bandwagon but there are not legions of screaming harridans.

The first paragraph is a nice generalisation that can be applied anywhere, anytime, anyplace with the post communist bit substituted with anything.

The origins of modern day feminism have their roots in communism.

Zim you can say that about almost anything eg the origins of modern day carpooling have their roots in communism:)

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

Did somebody say 'bób'? I am ready to go on a killing spree as long as I find a victim in front of a plate of bób. It's been decades since I had a some real, fresh, boiled bób.

God I've got loads growing right now. They are best picked young and then steamed just like early spuds, a bit of salt and a wee knob of butter is all you need.

History / Polish pirates [58]

Maurycy August Beniowski

Beniowski was a privateer, at certain times, and he established his own stronghold and unified the local kings who made him their "King," on October 10, 1776. He could not return to his native land or he would be imprisoned or killed. Some think he took booty from ships in this area, catch as catch can style. Cuttroat pirates, in this area, looted the Arab Mocha fleets, and Indian Mogul's galleons, as well as ships of competing "pirates."

There are loads of links but I suspect most are not too accurate.

Food / Is brain-damaging vegan fad growing in Poland? [176]

Olaf and I agree with you.

The mono culture and commercial movement of bee hives in the US has contributed to the decline of the bee population which is a very serious financial problem and a serious threat to food security. I'm not naive enough to suggest that organic production can feed the world because it cant a degree of industrialisation is necessary but keep it to a minimum. Also stop speculation on food crops and do as those "loony Left" people, Chavez and Castro said food is for people not to subsidise oil companies through ethanol production.
