News / WOSP in Poland [161]

The government's negative attitude usuallyworks to their adventage...

I can almost believe they have an agreement (something like pro-wrestling) where PiS agrees to be as nasty as possible to the cause of helping sick children because they know people will give more money then....

But no... they're probably just really that nasty that they resent money raised for sick children if they're not in charge of it.

One weird result of the moderation (if you want to call it that) is a lack of discussion of ongoing events in Poland.

So, since no one else has, I'll bring this one up again - today is the 27th final of WOŚP (grand orchestra of holiday help... better than the official 'translation')

Who here has participated or has thoughts on this citizen intiative, popular with the public and hated by the government?

Work / After Masters in Management, Job Opportunities in Poland ? [34]

I want to know if it's worth to shift there along with my husband and explore my career there

Namaskara!

In general, there aren't many prospects in healthcare unless you speak fluent Polish (who wants to have to speak a foreign language when you're sick?) So Poland is probably not the best option...

Language / Slavic languages words similarities with Polish [240]

Czechs in the border areas understand Polish and the Poles understand the local Czech dialect, so no-one bothers to actually learn it

In general Czechs can understand more Polish than Poles understand Czech, possibly because they get much more varied input. There's the difference between colloquial and literary (much bigger than the gap in Polish) and dialects (also more different from each other than Polish dialects) and for generations they regularly heard lots of Slovak...

Poles mostly just hear standard Polish which is convenient in some ways... and not so much in others.

I remember one time overhearing a Czech guy in the Warsaw airport (pre-addition) trying to communicate with a lady in a kiosk... A fine exercise in futility. I gave up on buying whatever I had gone for and thought I'd just let nature takes its course.

(don't bother with the English version, it's different (and crap) just run the polish through google translate for the gist of it and numbers)

Work / Work as English proofreader in Poland [19]

How does one get started as an English proofreader in Poland?

Other people have mentioned some of the practical networking stuff, I'll mention...

The best tactic is to not need to support yourself economically right away. Living in a new country (even one you've visited some) is very different from the long haul and it takes at least a year to learn how things work - the less stress you are to find work during that necessary period of adaptation the better. NB! The less time you think you'll need to adapt the more time you'll probably actually need.

Second, polish your Polish! Ironically, the better your Polish the more work will come your way. More than once when I have gone to meet a potential client they've been nervous and awkward until they realize I speak Polish (a signal that I know how things work and won't burden them with weird foreigner requests) you can sometimes feel their tension dissipate...

Be clear about what you can and can't do. If it's not a field you're familiar with explain that and explain that you might not recognize jargon (or technical terms) in the field and that someone who does know that should check your work out. Professionals often (not always) know this, but you need to be able to explain it.

Make sure your English is up to snuff. Just being a native speaker isn't enough, you need to have a solid grasp of different registers (informal, neutral, formal, general, academic etc) and you need to be willing to look up stuff to back up your changes (many people are liable to second guess or undo your changes if you can't defend them).

Be assertive, Poland is no country for people pleasers... don't be rude (a delicate balance for anglophone people) but if you don't learn to be assertive you'll end up with footprints on your forehead.

What you mean is decent politicians

No, I mean technocrats with no meaningful connection to the populations they are supposed to represent.

Of course national elections can not be used as an excuse to change economical agreements that were agreed upon with other countries

By this logic, Poland should still be in Comecon...

When was Varufakis prime minister?

They might win power through democracy, but they consistently do things to erode democracy as soon as they gain power

The same is true of all politicians... that's a baby argument.
Technically populism has both right and left manifestations Trump is a more center right populist and Bernie Sanders are more distinctly left populist.

the real division now is between populists (right and left) and the technocrats who wish to render elections meaningless as summarized by Wolfgang Schäuble (quoted by Varufakis) "Elections cannot be allowed to change economic policy"

populism and democracy?

Populism is democracy that progressives don't like.... the old definitions are invalid and whole swaths of political and social terms have been washed of meaning so much as to become shorthand for "I don't like it and I can't be bothered to explain or examine why!"

(fascist, socialist, racist, liberal and many other terms have become detached from their traditional meanings in this way)

they've taken away autonomy and returned things to direct ministerial control.

the university reform is pretty sucky too, I don't know the specifics but a conversation with colleagues made it sound dreadful (doing away with wydziały in favor of large centrally controlled 'institutes'...)

That is absolute crap.

How long have you lived in Poland? How much Polish bureaucracy have you dealt with? I've seen the changes away from the commie mentality and they're swinging back again in that direction under PiS[

In the PRL that was called 'full employment' where people were given jobs that were absolutely unecessary. Now they're just dispensing with the pretense of work and just giving money to people who should not be having children (rather than institute policies that would help the productively employed with children).

Given bolek's other postings I was assuming he was interested in Polish language sites (far more informative and interesting than English language sites about Poland)

The PiS party propaganda

PiS is the Neo-PRL, despite the lip service paid to decommunization a large percentage of PiS voters began missing the PRL once it became clear they wouldn't automatically become rich in capitalism and wanted someone to blame...

Every single PiS 'reform' is aimed at returning PRL practices and institutional structures (increasing centralization and decreasing transparency and accountability).

History / Is there a list of those in the Polish Army during WWII? [195]

It is a string of random letters as far as I can say

Given that's been handed down orally, I think there might be a small chance it's a (very) distorted version of Kazik (from Kazimierz) but searching by rank and last name (and/or hiring a specialist) is probably a good idea.

History / Would Poland be better off if it had lost in the Polish-Soviet War? [44]

the west is not shapes solely by the enlightenment but also by the values that has brought enlightenment forward.

I was abbreviating and simplifying...

All those values and motions which are deeply rooted in the European Christianity

there's some relation, but "deeply rooted" is an exaggeration (and there's no single "european christianity")

people especially in USA know very little about it

what can I say? we are a simple people, we sit in the ditches and put beans in our ears....

History / Would Poland be better off if it had lost in the Polish-Soviet War? [44]

Greece a country that started western civilisation is Cyrillic

No, it uses the Greek alphabet, cyrillic was derived from stretching the greek alphabet as far as it could go with the more complex phonologies of slavic languages and then borrowing some letters from other alpahbets (the letter pronounced 'sh' is from hebrew) and I believe some made up letters (maybe the letter for 'ch').

And in this context it has much more to do with the concept of the enlightenment that shaped western civilization not geographic west. Poles are (probably after Czechs) the most westernized Slavs in terms of being in tune with enlightenment thinking. Russia has never had an enlightenment (one reason they simply transform from one kind of dictatorship to another (tsars, soviets, putin) with brief periods of anarchy (yeltsin era) in between.

The enlightenment ended, but the west is still shaped by the values it propogated: logic, rationality, secularism, education as a path of progress, human equality... of course peoples and countries often fall short of enlightenment ideals but they are still seen as worthy goals.

Off-Topic / Ukraine, Belarus, Russia in EU in 2030? [105]

during private conversation.... private behind the closed doors opinion

In other words, there's either a Russian mole or the Russians bugged the meeting... (if it's true which I rather doubt).

Why can't Russia ever do anything honestly? It's just lie and spy all the time. No wonder Poland can't get along with Russia...
