Law / Custody Issue and Travel Abroad of my Girlfriend from Poland [31]

The children in question have always lived in Scotland, were taken out of Scotland by the father who only wanted to keep one of the two siblings. The courts system (at least more developed systems) regard keeping siblings together as important. They also regard continuity of home life and of schooling to be important.

And of course the mother was acting entirely legally when returning home to Scotland from Poland with her son.

It's quite refreshing to see, since usually this happens (illegally) in reverse.

USA, Canada / Using maiden name as middle name [21]

In GB you also have to turn to court if you want to have you new name registered in public records

No, you don't. The U.K. has no central identity register.

It is called deed poll

All a deed poll is is a document that you can write yourself and which should be witnessed by 2 people over 18. You don't even need to use a lawyer and you only need to send a copy to the court (enrol it) if you want to publicise the change or if you're changing the name of a minor.

You don't however need to send the document to the court for any other reason. An unenrolled deed pol is accepted for passports, driving licences, tax etc.

Law / Help with custom Poland plates [6]

Is it possible to have custom or regular registration plates in Poland that

Vanity plates are relatively new in Poland. They do exist however they are sold in very limited numbers by state auctions and as far as I know fit the normal pattern of registration numbers.

Law / Custody Issue and Travel Abroad of my Girlfriend from Poland [31]

Yeah right ??? a 13 yo child(boy

It's completely normal for a minor's wishes to be taken into account in custody proceedings.

It should be his welfare taken into account

Exactly, and as the article says, his welfare is served best by being where he is at home.

Law / Custody Issue and Travel Abroad of my Girlfriend from Poland [31]

Some very good news in a custody case.

In a rare bit of common sense a court has allowed a minor to decide which country they want to live in and has prevented the kid's father from taking him to Poland, where he's never lived.

Food / Polish Herb Search [7]

Roly Poly

That could be his anglicisation of "roladka" A very nice dish, can take a few different forms. I'll put a pic of a roladka at the bottom.

Lopska? Lopatka is a cut of meat. Maybe it's that? There's also lobscouse (I'm not sure of the spelling) which isn't really very Polish but more round the Baltic including Germany. It's an old sailors' favourite so if he was ever at sea, that could be a possibility.

"Chumsch".

I was racking my brains and then suddenly started laughing when I realised something.

There's a Polish word czymś (pronounced chymsch). It means = "something". He was adding something and said so!

Food / Polish Herb Search [7]

Chumsch

What country are you in? It would help a lot with understanding how to pronounce "chumsch".

The "big" Polish herb is marjoram (majeranek).

There's also chrzan (horseradish).

What did the herb look like? Fresh or dried? Was it green?

Food / Polish Pizza !! The best in the world? [330]

Did that elderly Italian lady give you a recipe for her pizza?

Yes, she used to make it right in front of me, always very simple and always delicious. There was also a Sikh lady there who used to cook things and I watched like a hawk. Something for a future recipe thread.

Just like how my mother was doing it for years

I can only remember my mum ever making it once. Too dangerously foreign back in those days (though Vesta 'curries' were almost OK); now now they make shakshuka so things have changed.

the crust was as high as a cake would be. I'm not sure if you could even call it a pizza, but it was delicious

I see pizza as part of a family of dishes in a few countries. Everything depends on ingredients, type of oven etc in any given place. Pissaladiere, croque monsieur, zapiekanka, rarebit, all distant cousins.

Life / Racism in Poland - the future [558]

irish coffee in Ireland

It was invented in the 1930s for passengers on early transatlantic flights, the ones that went New-York-Newfoundland-Ireland-London/Paris. The longest leg was the one to Ireland and the journey in old unpressurised and unheated planes was brutal. Irish coffee was created to revive the shaken passengers. For actual beverages in Ireland, tea has always been king however I suspect there's just as much Starbuckisation there as anywhere nowadays.

my experience of Poland is based on the years I've lived here.

Sadly, there are people out there who think that decades actually living here is somehow less real or valid than the experience of someone in Illinois called Kovalsky who can't find Poland on a map and whose knowledge of the Polish language is limited to mangling the pronunciation of "Wesoły Świąt".

Food / Polish Pizza !! The best in the world? [330]

Personally, when eating out I would eat a pizza using a fork and knife

I always used to until people in the U.K. started to get a bit snotty about it and said it should be with hands. So I switched. And then worked with Italians for several years and started doing it their way.

At home it depends since we either order two and share or I make a giant one in the biggest roasting tin which does need at least a fork or the middle bits will drop everywhere.

Always with yeast dough (easy work in a mixer) since I've never had much luck with soda doughs.

blue cheese which works remarkably well on pizza....... broccoli slice

Blue cheese is a great ingredient for pizza and a few other things. About broccoli, that could do. With quiche. I only do:the classic Lorraine kind but it's actually OK with broccoli and blue cheese. Somehow works well tnough I've not made that for decades.

I could've murdered a good curry at the time too

Most curry places here are rubbish and overpriced. They take advantage of people not knowing what's what, The pakora is especially bad, and always way too dear. There's a decent one in Hala Koszykowa in Warsaw. I think it's specific regional Indian food since most of it's new to me however it's the best I've found so far.

Food / Polish Pizza !! The best in the world? [330]

"Italians eat their pizza with a fork and knife"

I've seen this however I've also seen Italians slice the pizza with a knife and fork then eat the slices with their hands. In Italy they do t tend to use pizza wheels to slice before serving.

The lady who showed me how to make pizza was elderly back in the early 90s and is probably dead now. She came to Britain at the end of WW2 from southern Italy with her husband who I think was Hungarian. She didn't make round pizzas but always used a roasting tin and always said that the most important thing was the base. The toppings were simple.

Food / Polish Pizza !! The best in the world? [330]

Best I've tried was in Naples.

I've worked (twice over the years) for an Italian firm where most of the staff were Sicilian or Calabrian. The pizza in the canteen (these were 24/7 on site or at sea jobs) was so nice I nearly went weak at the knees every time they had it in the menu. Thing was, they only had it twice a week at the recommendation of the company/ship's doctor since many of the staff were male and of the heart attack age.

They also had unlimited help yourself gelato. One of the staff was from a family with a chain of gelato shops in (I think) Sicily. I went up two trouser sizes working there. The it's,Ian's often made an espresso and put a huge dollop of ice cream in. Works well.

Zapiekanka like it used to be in Warsaw and still is in a lot of places is just like Findus French Bread Pizza only worse, with swirls of ketchup, bottled mayo and limp gherkin slices. A good one is really good though and some of the fancy ones like Zapiexy mentioned above are pretty good. Better bread, jalapeños, a few fancy things.

I saw a recipe today for a Spanish mini pizza, sort of between zapiekanka and pissaladière. I'll try it in the week.

Maybe worth having a recipe thread. Some Polish recipes (adapted where necessary to ingredients overseas) and non-Polish dishes that can either be adapted for ingredients here or which would suit Polish tastes. It's sometimes a surprise which dishes from abroad go down well here and which ones don't.

News / Russian agents plan sabotage acts in Poland??? [74]

The police arrested two men in connection with this

Very good news.

One of them was drunk during the arrest.

That doesn't surprise me. If I was looking for saboteurs, I'd look for homeless people with mental health issues, the drunk, drug addicts and the desperate. I gather Ukraine are using that strategy for their excellent sabotage in r*SSia.

News / Polish Parliamentary Elections 2023 [933]

True, but look what happened after the war in England

In Britain?

It actually happened during the war, several months before the end, and surprised many people. Churchill was seen as a hero even by the people who voted him out. If they could have had a Labour government with Churchill as PM they'd have chosen that.

It could happen in Poland though I'm not at all sure there'll be change. As you say, what people voted for in 1945 was a National Health Service, nationalisation, unionised workplaces, health and safety at work, social housing and good pensions/sickness benefit.

500+ is a vote winner and it's hard to imagine people who depend on that risking its demise.

I don't think if english Labour Party had campaigned on an anti Churchill platform

Very much so. That would have been a non-starter. People voted for affordable homes, not against a much loved leader.

I'm not sure that any of the PiS figures (or any other politician from any party) are especially revered though.

Which one is on Chemilna

On the north side, going towards Nowy Swiat. It may have closed now. The zapiekanki had a four seasons theme.

fries with mayo

Not for me, unless I'm visiting Belgium where I've not been for ages anyway. Malt vinegar and salt is good.

There is a new place opened on Widok

I know the one, but haven't been for several years. A nice place to go to after beer. As I recall, it has old PRL newspapers as part of the decor. Quite good. There's also a nice one on Chmielna although I prefer the one on Widok.

Food / Eat goulash from a cat and a steak from a dog in Poland! [114]

wasn;t that about cats?

Both as I recall. They were getting them from a schronisko.

What happened to cats in Warszaw? They keep rats population in check

Feral cats? I'd guess that many have been poisoned to keep down the numbers.

dog meat is healthy

Human flesh won't kill you either however I'd personally prefer beef.

who is eating dogs?

As I recall, there was a scandal a few years ago about a wholesaler who was producing sajgonki. All over the local news in Warsaw where sajgonki were at the time very popular. I've avoided them since, as have many others.

no one in the world uses yeast dough for pizza

I've had that in Italy, home of the pizza.

In Poland, it's mostly made with soda though I'd prefer it with yeast.

@Alienr
r*SSians don't.

Poland (and several other countries in Europe though by no means all) stand up to r*SSian violence, aggression, absolutism and authoritarianism.

There is no such dish as Polish pizza

There's zapiekanka, worthy of note and a Polish creation.

Each bar,. pizzeria or outlet has their own style and recipe for making

And 90% of them are frankly a bit crap.

News / Russian agents plan sabotage acts in Poland??? [74]

It looks like the r*SSians have hacked into PKP systems around Szczecin, playing their horrid Stalin-era national anthem over PKP radio frequencies and allegedly stopping trains.

Hopefully the culprits will be caught and dealt with. It's a time when people need to be vigilant and to support the law enforcement and intelligence services in their efforts to protect the society we all live in. The threats are real and r*SSia has past form in trying to destabilise societies that are more democratic, prosperous and peaceful than theirs.

" Poland's domestic intelligence agency has been urged to investigate after the country's rail traffic management system was hacked, bringing trains to a halt near the north-western city of Szczecin on Friday night.

There are also unconfirmed reports that railway workers across the country have heard the Russian national anthem along with announcements of stopped trains being played on a radio frequency reserved for staff."
