News / Polexit? Almost half of the Poles believe that Poland would be better off outside of the EU [548]

A core EU might actually be the way forward, truth to be told.

If the EU cannot solve its inner contradictions that might be the only way forward for the non-northern countries.

You can't enforce austerity and preach solidarity at the same time (well you can, but that's a contradiction that will sooner or later tear you apart).

UK, Ireland / Moving from Ireland to Poland [39]

I happened to be talking to a young Polish person who'd spent several years in Ireland (including going to school for a few years and suffering reverse culture shock when coming back to Poland) and asked them that (thinking of you).

The answer was more or less what you said earlier "the money".... They said their father liked some Irish food (mentioned fish and chips and some kind of roll with chicken(?) but mostly when they leave they leave.

IINM most Poles who go to Ireland are motivated almost entirely by money.

There are Poles who are interested in Irish culture and folklore (there used to be an Irish dancing scene) and the idea of celtic culture has some appeal but those Poles mostly don't actually go there...

Law / Poland's Muzzle Law [22]

"Actors are like cattle!"

Actually (according to Camille Paglia) what he said was more like 'actors should be treated like cattle'

Off-Topic / Random movies (not Polish) proposed by forum users [95]

I'd include Nicolas Cage.... but he wasn't so much lazy as crazily determined to turn himself into a parody of himself.

OT: Have you seen the Dublin Murders? If so, what did you think of it?

he turned into such a Libtard douche bag.

He turned into such a lazy actor.... has he done anything remotely good since Goodfellas? (where he was fourth in line in terms of performance)? Was he in Casino? If yes, was he any good?

Work / English school or beauty salon in Poland? Business option [16]

English school : Market is saturated Poland is long past peak English

Beauty salon : How are you going to communicate with clientele? with employees? What special techniques do you have that aren't already on the market?

Do Polish people like any specific Irish food? Drink? Some kind of Irish establishment _might_ be a viable idea....

What does Irish Polonia miss when they go back to Poland? What do they especially like in Ireland?

Real Estate / Carpetying style? - question to Brits living in Poland [26]

. It was popular in the USA too, especially in the 1970s

I don't know if it was that popular. I only remember seeing one motel bathroom with it (and the next year it was gone). Where I'm from (hot humid south) it would turn into an algae fungus factory within a matter of days...

Work / Moving to Poland from Ireland - starting a professional life [32]

Why are you people assuming that she doesn't want/need to learn as much Polish as quickly and thoroughly as she can?

One of the reasons I learned Polish was doing projects around people who didn't speak English.

Language is the key to successful integration in Poland (never met anyone well-integrated without very functional Polish) and to do that you need to put yourself in difficult awkward situations where you struggle.

OP: Speak Polish as much as you can with everyone (even if it seems they know some English). Any Pole who discourages you from speaking Polish is not your friend.

Genealogy / British name Russell in Poland [26]

standard neutral speech in any English speaking country is very similar to each other

I'm not so sure, the pronunciations nienazwany mentions are easily part of GAE (general american english the us standard)

pronouncing cot and caught identically is not weird or regional in the US and neither is rhyming wonder and under (they don't rhyme for you?) what about wander and yonder?

the middle sound in English words such as

There is no single English vowel system you need to specify what variety you're talking about (as nienazwany pounts out in #23)

The Polish o is a weird bird, it's close to the backward c of phonetics (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-mid_back_rounded_vowel) but a bit higher.

You can get by with a Spanish o though.

that's weird! It's the normal 'd' sound in Ireland

Here's the best youtube explanation of the American pronunciations

Why would they look for an obscure foreign name?

Starting about 15 to 20 years or so ago the 500+ class began going heavily for anglophone names and started giving them names like Vanessa (Wanessa?) Samantha (Samanta?) Kewin, Brajan

That turned the middle class agains them which started going for more traditional names, I heard some wit say something like Wanessa and Brajan are going to be working for Aleksandra and Adam.

the 'r' in Sandra is actually sounded by all English speakers, regardless of their accent.

Unlike the d in Sandra (pronounced more like a d in some places and closer to j (as in Jack) in others. Which is more common in Ireland? Sanjra is a lot more common in the US...

Genealogy / Mongolian the Golden Horde - do Poles have Mongolian ancestry? [256]

highest levels are found in the Middle East and not in Europe.

Then were do the caveman looking Germans come from?

I could swear I saw this guy outside a German grocery store in Berlin drinkin' with his buddies (and his friends around town)

So?

His religion thinks women should always be deferential to men, you're not deferential enough so he feels the need to big up his authority around you so that you'll be a properly submissive girl.

I see faces in Warsaw that have subtle, but clearly visible, Mongolian-type featues

Years ago I knew a Polish woman studying Japanese, when she went to Japan.. people assumed she was Japanese because of her looks. Apparently there was a Turkic woman on her father's side, none of those features came out in her father or her sister but were concentrated in her.

Life / - Conservative Radio talk shows in Poland - [60]

I was talking of Polish conservatives in Poland and the E.U.

Between Radio Maryja and state owned media conservative opinions are well covered. What issues aren't being addressed in those that conservatives are interested in?

Maybe more free markets but pro-free market people are more socially liberal in Poland....

Shows what you don't know about politics.

I was speaking about the 'independence day' celebrations which a very large majority of Poles with IQs in the triple digits don't want to have anything to do with.

As a Polam (accent on the Am) dirk (my idol is a male prostitute) diggler simply doesn't understand Polish happenings except through an American filter that does no good.

In most of Europe American style conservative radio is just a non-starter, real conservative talk radio about local issues wouldn't be anything that appealed to American conservatives....

UK, Ireland / Boris Johnson - is the new British PM a popular figure in Poland? [150]

Is Boris Johnson quite popular in Poland?

No. A large percentage of Polish people like to think of the UK as a kind of bugout location, a way to start anew if things go south in Poland (and they don't know or care what UK subjects think of that).

A guy who won a crushing election with the promise of getting Brexit done won't be popular. There's still Ireland but that's not nearly as appealing (too... Irish). There's also a bunch of other countries in western europe but the widespread presence of English in the education system makes the UK the first choice for most (a popular language can also be a burden).

News / Polexit? Almost half of the Poles believe that Poland would be better off outside of the EU [548]

.the industry is only the beginning. Most big players play globally and are multi-national by now

By welfare state! Hello Brazilian social model of small elite, no middle class and large, disposable underclass!

(that's what globalism means, it's not a benign concept by any stretch of the imagination).

How much of the German social safety net are you willing to sacrifice for 'global competitiveness'?
