News / Should Poland made an energy bridge deal with Russia? [122]

They did it already if I remember it correctly...all because of the spat with Ukraine.

Ah, tell us more, please.

Nice words...but a realistic scenario please!

Awwe BB... Come on!

I just think this is exactly where the E.U. should show a united front to benefit us all.

How, if they don't get paid by the Ukraine?

When Russia did cut off Ukraine, Poland was still being supplied but you have a point.

News / Should Poland made an energy bridge deal with Russia? [122]

What could they do if Russia cuts off Ukraine because they don't want to pair the regular price???

I don't know, Germany and Poland have the same fear and are part of a union.
I believe Russia also needs to sell it's product and it wouldn't be profitable to cut off Poland AND Germany, know what I mean?

How so? We had some winters already were everybody from Ukraine downwards was cut off because of the disagreements!

Because Russia would lose money if they cut off their gas to a European Union.
I am going for Russia's business perspective.

Do do what exactly?
Pressing Ukraine to pay? Lending Ukraine the money??? Threatening Russia with war??? What???

Not lending Ukraine money.
No war, please.
Business, two customers have more of a pull than individually.
If Germany and Poland were to be joined on this one it could make for better conditions, stabilizing any fears about being cut off.

Ukraine is not part of the union.

News / Should Poland made an energy bridge deal with Russia? [122]

what would you had done if you were in Germany's boots?

Is it not possible to appeal to the E.U. commission on trade?
(I'd look great in a pair of German boots:)

We were the victims of regular soviet/ukrainian/polish spats with regularly being cut off from the energy too...

I think that is what Poland would also fear.
If Russia wanted they could cut Poland off, the pipe line going through here would deter such an action.
I think this came to the front when they did it to Ukraine mid-Winter, it got everyone nervous and I would like to see a united E.U. front.

Well, I'm not an insider in polish domestic politics but I really wonder how Poles would wish for another Kaczinsky or say that "Tusk sells Poland down ther river"..

I wouldn't believe everything you read on here. Poland has not gone in to recession and although unemployment has gone up it has not reached a critical level so people are happy enough with how it is progressing.

And it is always the politicians that get the praise for such relative success, whether or not they deserve it is another thing.... but I have to admit life is getting easier here with regards to bureaucracy, I had some unexpected changes recently that I am over the moon about.

Tusk looks good beside other E.U. leaders and seems to want partnership rather than witch hunting.

In the long run yes, no fee to pay for Ukraine and Poland to use their soil.

It just seems more like a game of geopolitical chess but I could be wrong.

Quite, yes. He is seen as serious politician.

The people I talk to here also see him as a better face for Poland. That is not to say that he is not scrutinised at every turn but when people talk about Politics here you have to read between the lines as it is generally quite negative.

Nord Stream circumventing Poland = cheaper gas.

Perhaps I assumed too much when I assumed it would be more expensive to go underwater.
Is it cheaper?

Kaczynski

That's three years ago BB, is Tusk liked in Germany?

In Poland are one of the biggest deposits of gas. We won`t consume it for 100 years.

Why not or is it just hot air? :)

USA doesn't care about Poland. They interest in this country is only about dibs.

Why would the U.S. care about Poland being an energy bridge with Russia except for business?

So, In EU Germany is ruling and place of Poland in Germans plans is to be a bridge - energy bridge.
Good deal with Russia wouldn't be bad for Poland.

I dislike the way the E.U. isn't showing a unified front on this issue with Russia.
The Nord Stream line circumventing Poland to Germany shows the E.U's weakness, in my opinion.
Are we a European Union or still stuck in our internal conflicts?
It is my belief that, as a union working in co-operation, we will all benefit more than showing ourselves as every man for himself.
I hope that Poland continues to improve relations with both Germany and Russia.

Life / What do Polish people do for Holy Thursday? [6]

I have just seen many Polish people on their way to church, some people will stay in church all night, while Jesus was arrested.
I think tomorrow is a day of mourning and there is no mass, while people fast.

There'll be a mass on Saturday at 6 and Sunday. On Sunday a procession will go three times around the church.

Life / Why are so many Polish People rude on the internet? [96]

I've seen rude postings by Americans but not on the scale of some of the forums for Poles. It's shameful and, frankly, disgusting what they write. It makes me sad to know Polish language. Racism and cussing abound!

Really?
On this forum?

I am not a hundred percent who is Polish on this site, I only know of about 10 : Easy Terrain, Socrates, Torq, pawian, McCoy, Funny bunny, Lodztheboat, Frd, Grzegorz, and Justyna.

A lot of the rudeness on here are from other non-Polish posters.

Get to the point. The sort that type such nonsense are invariably tanked-up nobs that have overshot on vodka. There is also an element of cowardice involved. They wouldn't say half the BS that they write to the faces of their targets.

Heyyyy! I don't drink vodka...much.

Armchair warriors. Usually racist, which is a symptom of inadequacy if ever there was one.

And I don't sit in an armchair but if I did it would be the greatest one ever.

Travel / Poland wildlife and similar wild life where you live. [243]

chaffinch.

I thought you were joking at first, like a chav Finch or somfink :)
Thanks.

This bird is not migratory in the milder parts of its range, but vacates the colder regions in winter. The coelebs part of its name means "bachelor". This species was named by Linnaeus; in his home country of Sweden, where the females depart in winter, but the males often remain.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaffinch#Behaviour

I love this function on Wiki when you can hear the bird
upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a1/Fringilla_coelebs_short.ogg

It is very common in Europe, which to me means it is well evolved for it's surroundings, a survivor.

Can anyone tell me what species of bird this is, please?

There is a huge population of birds where I live. Morning times resemble the sounds of a huge city, except the population are all birds.

Love / 20% of adult Poles are single and live with Mummy! [241]

Just a little interesting thing I noticed.
When I taught English, the "typical family" consisted of four people: mother, father, son and daughter.
When I was learning Spanish the "typical family" consisted of ten + people: mother, fathers, sons, daughters, uncles, aunts, grandparents etc...

It appears that English speaking families are the ''odd ones out'' with our nuclear families, not the other way round.

20% of adult Poles are single and live with Mummy!

Why are the other 80% leaving their poor mothers? After all she did for them, men tut!

Shouldn't their be a parallel survey on how many men turn their wives into their mothers?

Study / STUDY ABROAD in Krakow. What's the area like (and a few more questions). [6]

Hello Tymon1965,

And welcome to the Polish forums.

One what is the area like?

I live near Krakow, I am Irish and I think it is a wonderful city.
I don't know what kind of climate you are accustomed to but the summers are hot and the winters are cold.

Recommendations for Krakow and Myślenice and somethng else of note is an hour's drive south Recommendations for Zakopane.

How much will it cost me to stay?

I find that this very much depends on your quality of life and habits.
Rent and entertainment vary in prices depending on location and standard.
So the more information you provide the better we can answer this question.

and will it hurt me that I do not speak fluent Polish?

It is always advisable to learn even the basic polite forms of the language before you stay in any country.
Almost all young people in Krakow speak English and all the menus in restaurants and bars are in English, as Krakow is a tourist destination it has changed a lot over the past few years, regarding language.

Any advice you can give will be helpful.

It is a really beautiful city and I am sure you will thoroughly enjoy it :)

What are you going to study?

History / MAP OF POLAND IN 1880'S [95]

Couldn't you have done the required clickery and gadgetry at your end so the map would immediately show up?

I don't know if you are talking about the map I posted but as mine is the only map with red, I think it is me.

And to answer: I have no idea what you are talking about, I just posted a youtube link that I thought is interesting.

History / Piłsudski, like Hitler and Stalin (according to some Lithuanians) [144]

The Lithuanian Embassy in Warsaw has refused to comment on envelopes at the Main Post Office in Vilnius, comparing a Polish national hero with Stalin and Hitler.

The envelopes also accuse Polish resistance fighters of carrying out ethnic cleansing in Lithuania in 1944 and of Poland being "a strategic occupier instead of a strategic partner of Lithuania," with Poland's policy allegedly "radiating with chauvinism and imperialism''.

The news.

Food / Polish v Western farm produce? [14]

That is f*cked up, and shouldn't be allowed at all.

You must have seen it, it is common sight.

It can never be free when one country is massively subsidizing people to farm a certain crop.

This practice has effectively destroyed local farming businesses in some African countries.

Food / Polish v Western farm produce? [14]

Poland has a lot of small scale, old fashioned, production.

I find this to be a huge visual difference when I drive an hour from here (Poland) across the boarder to Slovakia.
There are big co-operatives in Slovakia, I think co-ops has the connotation of communist here in Poland.
So you get lots and lots of small thin strips of fields here, whereas in Slovakia they have joined them together in some places.

I often see a cow with a few metres of rope nailed to a field, it is very strange for an Irishman.
I still don't understand why people don't make a boarder and just let the cows walk around? probably money but it just seems strange to me.

As for quality and nutriotional value, the imported stuff is possibly genetically modified, chemcially fertilised, preserved and prettified, but even so shouldn't it cost much more at the retail end than locally produced stuff.

It could be that the mass production farms sell their produce for less when the fulfil their quota?

I know the U.S. and Europe sell some African countries their surplus of food for less than the local farmers can.
Effectively destroying local farming livelihoods.
So for an example a farmer produces 10 million tons of corn, if he sells it in his own country, the price of corn would go down, so he sells 4 million tons to his own country and can sell the extra 6 million tons at rock bottom prices abroad.

If they don't sell the surplus they destroy it by burning it.

The old supply and demand business practice, it isn't fair but that seems to be the way things are done.

History / Future of Kaliningrad Oblast - is it possible to annex by Poland or will it become an independent country? [137]

You talkin' to me?...I'm not registered on their forum, and I don't post there, but I do sometimes read posts there when they come up on a 'search'.

I thought you were a member because you have quoted from StormFront before.

comments by famous people about Hitler

Hitler was a great statesman he brought Germany from starvation to almost taking over Europe and more but he was also a complete jerk.

Anyway, what does this have to do with Kaliningrad?

I think there are two separate discussions on this particular forum.

here you all are condemning freedom of speech

Who is?

Pointing out that the source is taken from a very well known white nationalist, supremacist, neo-Nazi hate site is very relevant on a Polish forum.

if they have any sense they will organise a public referendum, spin it off as a seperate country and apply for EU membership.

I would say, if they had any control...
Which I don't believe they do.

Travel / Hiking around Zakopane/ Tatra mountains [22]

Dia duit Elaine,

Yes there are loads of places to stay in Zakopane and many walks and treks.
Zakopane itself is a nice place to saunter around and there should not be too many people at the end of April.
You will love it :)

You may find these threads of use : https://polishforums.com/archives/2005-2009/travel/recommendations-zakopane-30691/2/

and Walks up the Beskids mountains

The Beskids mountains are the foot hills to the high Carpathian mountains (Zakopane).

Life / Are foreigners welcome in Poland? [267]

Every time i visit Krakow i see more non-Europeans, especially negroes and turks. :(

So yes, foreigners feel very welcome in Poland. Too welcome.

You are a foreigner in Poland, you twit.
You are just obsessed with people of different colour.
Why not talk about your own experiences as an immigrant here and if you are welcome?
