Life / Americanization of Poland - good or bad? [49]

Poles don't learn English so they can speak to Americans

Very true, similarly they don't learn it so they can speak to people from the British Isles... they mostly learn it because it's mostly a required subject at school (and language learning has always had a prominent place in the Polish school system).

News / Presidential elections 2020 - your opinions about campaign, candidates [2222]

Well there's a lot of people who "defend" various PiS mis-deeds with the equivalent of "PO is just as bad!"

PiS has played very dirty in the past, so..... turnabout is fairplay.

PAD is not and will never be president of all Polish people because he's tied to PiS and simply does whatever pan prezes tells him.

Language / Verbal nouns and past-tense adjectives from imperfective & perfective verbs..when to use which aspect? [48]

there's only "Zobaczywszy"

the -wszy forms (only with perfective verbs) are just about non-existent in spontaneous everyday usage, it's mostly found in more formal writing.

I've never seen "Bywszy"

Not by itself, but some derived forms can be spotted now and again...

być itself has both perfective and imperfective qualities (the only such verb in Polish AFAIK)

do you know much about TV financial history or reality?

Do you?

Pop question: You can decide where to spend two billion zloties...

a) TVP as currently constructed (mouthpiece of the government)

b) healthcare system (in general)

where would you spend it if it were your personal choice?

I agree that signing the law on a train platform was no big deal, but why was Morawiecki there during Duda's speech? Why was his body language so freaky?

No matter what you think of him, this can't help Duda at all I haven't seen a single positive comment about it... just more or less hostile and/or more or less "well, things happen". No actual defense has been raised for this craven act of partisanship.

His ambition of being president of the entire country is dead. He's the president of those who vote for PiS.

Food / Which foods are generally disliked/unpopular in Poland? Which non-Polish foods are slowly gaining popularity? [180]

we don't generally get the American brands as much

There's also the phony McEnnedy-American-way brand often sold at Lidl... I've bought some of it but it's usually a little off (not necessarily terrible but not quite real American either). I've seen another pseudo-American brand or two as well but can't remember the names...

@forumuser
Canned soup has never been a think in Poland though there are more and more prepared foods available (not so much frozen but ready to (h)eat dinners).

Macaroni and cheese is also not a thing here.

But sort-of-fresh guacamole is now available so, !soy feliz!

next stop: fresh corn tortillas...

How long before someone "fixes" it back?

A few years ago I was involved with an international information web-project. One of the things I was supposed to do (as a native speaker) was edit things other people wrote (in a common editing area before launching the site).

Unfortunately one or three people keep changing my edits back to the originals... occasionally that wasn't a problem but most of the time it was with people determined to insert clumsy non-native expressions into the text... I finally gave up changing it at all... (I had previously mentally checked out because of other bad decisions that didn't do anything good for the content, by the end I just didn't care anymore...).

News / A better Polish solution: aiding refugees in their home region [29]

...with what army? :)

The Greek and Bulgarian armies for the time being... I notice EU official rhetoric this time around is a lot like Orban in 2015.... The Merkeljugend have not exactly won the hearts and minds of the German public and no one wants a rerun of that ongoing debacle....

Life / Can someone tell me about the reason behind being gay in Poland being wrong [148]

society should decide on the laws

Agreed, but it should force religious doctrine on non-believers through the law...

what do you want?: not interfering of religious beliefs

I'm very cool with letting people have their religious beliefs in their house of worship and the home. People who are against same sex marriage for religious reasons should absolutely not marry someone of the same sex...

Negotiating the boundaries of civil and religious ethics is difficult and tricky and not helped by people who just want to use their religion to hit others over the head with....

rephrase that sentence to "un-natural sex acts"

what about an infertile person having sex... isn't that unnatural?

My dupa is a one way street or " exit only" lol

So heterosexual anal sex is the same kind of sin? Do preachers use up valuable air time railing against it?

What about lesbian sex? Are heterosexual versions 'unnatural'?

don't need tolerance, acceptance or understanding. What they really need is grace and forgiveness

Why? Why are consenting sexual acts between adults of the same sex a sin?

the true and only source of happiness

People who talk about an "only source of happiness" are very scary.... I don't trust them as they have limited imaginations and no empathy...

Language / Verbal nouns and past-tense adjectives from imperfective & perfective verbs..when to use which aspect? [48]

Okay, I was hoping for some German there, but.... anyhoo...

The use of zostać (become) with past participles is likely a loan translation from German which uses werden (become) for such constructions. But być is also used. I remember there's a slight difference in meaning but it's pretty subtle and not necessary to worry about at this stage.

Basically, both być and zostać with past participles are more formal, written language (esp journalism) and not so common in speech.

With another million pouring in

I'm doubting that will happen. No matter what European leaders say they don't want a repeat of 2015 and will tacitly give Greece and Bulgaria to do whatever is needed to stop the flow...

Language / Verbal nouns and past-tense adjectives from imperfective & perfective verbs..when to use which aspect? [48]

but what are differences between imperfective vs. perfective verbal nouns?

Basically the same as verbs.... the best aid I ever heard was for Czech (but it works in Polish too).

perfective - you're thinking of the event from its ending/completion

imperfective - you're thinking of the process

coś do zobaczenia - something to see (and then its done)

coś do widzenia - something to look at... (stressing the process of seeing it)

It's the same thing with the past participles...

Adam był zobaczony w mieście = Adam was spotted in town

Adam był widziany w mieście = Adam was seen (more than one place) in town.

hint: rephrase the sentence so that the noun or adjective/participle is a plain verb and that's the form you use.

Zobaczył Adama w mieście (He saw Adam (once) in town)

Widział Adama w mieście (He saw Adam (more than once) in town)

Life / New born baby traditions in Poland [26]

irthdays have always been more important.

How old are you (in general terms)? I've asked a friend or two who grew up before the 00s and they all said birthdays weren't really a thing when they were kids - it was all imieniny...

In capitalistic terms birthdays are more about consumption and so they've been heavily marketed (like buying expensive things for christmas presents)...
