Life / i went to poland and killed myself [13]

an even better name for an alternative rock band

It sounds like the first line of a modernist 60s poem or the title of an art house film.

Or how I feel after watching an episode of Klan.

Life / Satanic and Heretical Manifestations in Poland [123]

like Jews

Gnome attar what the thread, someone on PF mentions them sooner or later.

Islamists

I don't know about Islamists since the world of Djinn is rarely a priority for them however Muslims in general have a very sophisticated outlook on Djinn.

They are more like another race of people, a supernatural race with whom we share the land

Basically Djinn.

fairies

Of course there's the other type of fairy. Klaus Gnomi was apparently one.

Life / Satanic and Heretical Manifestations in Poland [123]

when people want to do other people harm

They really don't do that. For witches it's forbidden to harm anyone and foolish enough to do so, even without trying (beginners' luck is a thing) the consequences are far worse than the harm done.

evil practice

You're far more likely to see evil outside the esoteric or the spiritual.

Evil is real and it doesn't need magic.

Witches to gather

Gubalowka allegedly has quite a history, however it's largely history as is a particular site in the north east and witches rarely if ever work at night.

Of course a witch, often on a broomstick, is a symbol of the Świętokrzyskie and that region does have a sort of magical feel to it, a bit like the Harz Mountains.

There's a couple of Slavic pagan sites around Warsaw, both modern.

I find it sickening

Why?

Life / Jerzy Kosinski: Are his works popular in Poland? [48]

His much tanished reputation

He even claimed to have met that other fraudster, Laura something and she of course was quick to pretend the same. Neither had been in the awful place they'd claimed to be; both were happy to make money from it.

If he'd wanted to write fiction about those terrible times it wouldn't have been a problem. Falsely claiming to be a victim of them is very much a problem.

Life / Medical screening in Poland [4]

Can I get these procedures done in private clinics

Yes.

clinics in Warsaw and Gdansk where the personnel speak English?

I usually go to a place where they don't, however there are some big 'chain' ones that advertise online. They usually have some English-speaking staff.

That's what some of the gurus say.

There's a weird sect called Himavanti just outside Warsaw. Their leader was locked up for trying to harm JPII when he visited.

Language / Is it possible to master the Polish language fluently for a non-Polish speaker? [120]

dreadful to listen to....

Some "stayed too long" efl teachers in desert places end up speaking it themselves.

Free of nuance, colour, flexibility, charm and humour.

And it's in PL too of course and has sadly started to spread to London.

I actually saw the non-existent word "trainings" in London. I'd only heard it in Poland. Then again, mistakes eventually getting codified into language is nothing new.

Life / Satanic and Heretical Manifestations in Poland [123]

No. I only know the bare bones (and not necessarily the accurate story) rather than the details and it really is something that's not discussed. Basically village stuff.

There were the 'occult murders' in Komarow/Warsaw back in the 50s. I think there's some material online about it.

There was a big occult (though not at all Satanist) presence in Warsaw pre-war and quite a bit written about it.

Plus of course most of the kit that the Nazis seized from occult temples and various esoteric groups round Germany is currently stored in Poland (they stored it in premises in what was their eastern territories and left it behind when retreating). It's under the care of a university and very much not available to see. You can see part of the library though.

It would probably fetch a fortune if auctioned off lin London, Paris or New York.

Life / Satanic and Heretical Manifestations in Poland [123]

Satanism came to Poland in the early eighties

Long before that. There was something very nasty that happened in South East Poland in the late 30s involving a priest. It's not discussed even by historians.

There's a few groups around and about however in Poland people on the occult scene generally prefer more cerebral spiritual paths.

Language / I love the word Kurwa [26]

Polish is incredibly complex

All languages have their complexities and plenty of people achieve fluency in Polish.

Compare to Arabic or Hebrew it's a walk in the park.

One thing that makes it easier for native speakers is the relatively small number of lexemes in Polish and the straightforward semiotics.

Language / I love the word Kurwa [26]

it is actually a Tibetan word, korwa

Or sounds similar to one.

as an english speaker that this language is incredibly hard

There are far harder ones and plenty of English speakers who are fluent in Polish.

History / What should Russia and Poland do to become if not friends, then at least not enemies? [945]

the difference in accents at that time

To be fair, a few of the cast were from the U.K. and one (who played Judy Bryant, the big lesbian prisoner with a kind heart) plus maybe a couple more were from America.

It used to be on just after pub closing time and was popular in its day. It died when Home and Away set in Sydney started (Aussie soaps need both the Melbourne and Sydney markets to be financially viable).

Women in prison shows are always more entertaining than men in prison....

Aren't they just. I used to love it when they fought or when Queen Bea used to shove a naughty inmate into the steam laundry press.

UK, Ireland / Polish engineer and family found dead in village. [26]

both

Birds of a feather.

There's nothing unusual.

There is. There's one key factor that is u usual.

You do your serial killing while traveling

One day you may very well find out.

History / What should Russia and Poland do to become if not friends, then at least not enemies? [945]

What was the clue?

A popular entertainer's catchphrase.

I think I've been unlucky with the Aussies I've worked with. Plenty in the Middle East and several of them
we're downright scary. They all think or pretend they're exceptional stars. There's an Aussie word "bludger" which I think is about that.

I used to enjoy Prisoner Cell Block H which was a bit off for Brits; there were some obvious similarities in culture and language however they always behaved in different ways.

If you've not heard of the docusoap "Sylvania Waters" it's worth a look. YouTube have it I think.

New Zealanders

Scotland in the southern hemisphere.

About Canadians, Irving Welsh wrote that they were Scottish people who couldn't get on with people around them and left.

He's far from the only narcissist here

There are some good online tests to diagnose narcissism, psychopathy, sociopathy etc. I did some once and the results said I was pretty well the opposite of all three. Almost a shame since psychopaths seem to have a lot of fun.

About nationalities, although I know someone in PL who is certainly on the psychopathology scale and a slight narcissist too (she's actually a nice person albeit rather right wing and libertarian economically) I'd not say that Poland is a nation of narcissists, psychopaths at all; if anything most people in PL are empathetic.

russia though? Harder to say, however they do some things that suggest narcissism.

There's one nationality though that seem to me to be a nation of narcissists and psychopaths. Perhaps I've been personally unlucky in the ones I've interacted with however that would be statistically unlikely. There's one person I know from there who isn't on that scale and one poster here who also seems decent and not on that scale however they are both hyphen-whatsits with strong connections to other places.

The country? Can you guess what it is yet?

PS, the last sentence was a subtle clue.
