Please try not to confuse Jimmy Poorhouse: he's so financially illiterate that he refers to funds as stocks. He doesn't know what they are, doesn't know what they do, doesn't know what they invest in. The most important thing in trading is recognising one's limits. There are very well-qualified and superbly trained analysts who do nothing all day apart from researching very narrow sectors of the market. Their research is then either sold or used by their employers for trading. As a bloke at home you just are not going to beat those researchers, you don't have the knowledge or the access to information, or the time, the expertise and the drive. You could buy access to their reports, but given the percentage advantage those reports give and the cost of them, you need to be managing tens of millions of dollars in order to cover the costs. Not even Jimmy Poorhouse claims to have tens of millions of dollars invested.

So, given one's limits, it's much better to simply track the market than to try to pick individual shares. Even Jimmy Poorhouse now recognises that, and claims to have "most" of his money in tracker funds. Of course he's too f*cking stupid to actually research the ETFs he claims to have tens of thousands in, so he told us all that an S&P 500 tracker fund is a "tech fund" and that a CRSP US Large Cap Growth Index tracker fund is a "tech fund"! Jimmy Poorhouse never knows when to stop. Even after it's crystal clear to everybody here that he hasn't got the first clue about finance (to give just one example: he's completely unable to understand how percentages work and so can't understand the difference between a stock going up by 300% and the growth rate of an index being 300% of the growth of a particular stock, as he'll no doubt make clear in at least one of his posts today), he still tries to claim he's a market guru. But now it's become clear to everybody that he doesn't have the first clue about ETFs and can't even tell a general stock tracker fund from a tech fund, he's moved on to claiming most of his money is in mutual funds.

Of course Jimmy Poorhouse doesn't own a hedge. For one thing those cost actual money, not the fantasy kind which is all Jimmy Poorhouse has. For another hedges need trimming, and Jimmy Poorhouse doesn't have money for even a pair of shears, let alone a hedge trimmer. And even if he did, trimming a hedge would cut into the time he needs to spend on fantasising about being rich. Or at least rich enough to be able to eat meat other than roadkill.

But he has got a big bush outside his shack. And I'm sure he'll tell you all about it. Maybe in exchange you can explain to him the relationship between one share going up by 1% of its value and an index going up by 3% and growth rate of one being 300% of the other. For the one I looked at yesterday I'm paying 0.45% as a fund management fee, with 0% front-end load and 0% maintenance fee. That said, it's not an ETF, although ETFs don't have load fees either, that's part of the point of them.

All those amounts are publicly advertised and can easily be verified online. Jimmy Poorhouse can check for himself when he knows the name of the fund, which he'll be able to see from the transfer order I post once he donates $5 to the PF survival fund.

But Jimmy Poorhouse won't donate. He doesn't have the money to donate. I bet you a ticket to the Warsaw Beer Festival and two pints there against a used piece of chewing gum that he won't donate. Care to take that bet?

Both IZKE and IKE are Polish schemes similar to ISAs in that they're a tax efficient ways of saving. IKZE contributions are fully tax-deductible (so the tax man gives you back 32% of what you put in each year) and the capital gains tax is only 10% if you hold the IZKE to maturity. IKE offers a capital gains tax rate of zero percent. Both are limited in terms of the amount one can put in.

Actually, it's lucky we're talking about this now, it's reminded me that I need to send my 2024 IKZE contribution. I know you don't gamble, but how about a sporting wager? I bet you a virtual pint that if I say I'll post a copy of the transfer order from me sending my 2024 IKZE contribution if Jimmy Poorhouse donates $5 to the PF survival fund, he won't take up the offer. It is absolutely superb! Live to 80 and you get back PLN 751,036 for the PLN 31,325 you paid in. That's the kind of return even Jimmy Poorhouse wouldn't boast about. Partly because he's too financially illiterate to know what PLN is and partly because he'd be sure people wouldn't believe him. But it's true: pay in £179 / PLN 895zl per year for 35 years and get back £221.20 / 1,111zl per week for life from your 67th birthday onwards.

Imagine how jealous Jimmy Poorhouse must be of that return, he could fix his roof, buy a car from this millennium and still have enough money left over to actually buy some shares (or at least give Marge some money to feed into the slots at the Odawa reservation casino, which would give a far better rate of return).

The problem is that shareholders get to direct companies. And what kind of company wants morons such as Jimmy Poorhouse to have any say in how they're run? That's just a recipe for bankruptcy! Index trackers are how to not lose more money on the stock market than the wider market loses. Instead trying to pick stocks that will beat the market average, these funds aim "to closely track the index's return".
Until a month ago Jimmy Poorhouse had never heard of them, which is why he would post here trying to boast about his ability to produce returns that are an average of less than half what one can make by simply tracking the market indices. Now he claims to have "most" of his money invested in "ETF's" (he is, of course, too dumb to know the name is actually ETFs).

Jimmy Poorhouse is so financially illiterate that he doesn't even know the difference between a market index and an exchange-traded fund, as he makes clear in this post:

Reminder for those who really do invest actual money (rather than the fantasy kind Jimmy Poorhouse has): this year the maximum for IKZE investments is PLN 9,388.80. Put that in and you get PLN 3,004.41 back from the taxman.

Also, thos year it's up to PLN 23,472 in your IZE. Nothing back from the taxman for that, but hold it until you're 60 and you can collect your winnings without the 19% Belka tax you pay on other capital gains. I reckon it's worth chucking the maximum in.
