Life / Poles speaking English - examples [263]

Filler words are a clear sign of sb`s inaptitude.

They aren't. They're a natural part of coherent speech.

what fluent actually means

Or perhaps we do and you don't.

Fluency involves appropriate pausing, grouping words together, appropriate repetition, appropriate rate, repairs, intonation and coherence.

Work / English teacher thinking about starting his own business in Poland - any ideas [10]

specking

I get the impression that she's not precise with words.

People can bluff as a teacher if they can put on a show well enough to hold an audience for a while, however sooner or later it stops working.

Enthusiasm is one thing; an understanding of how people learn and how to manage this is another. Perhaps there's less competition in a small market.

Travel / Finding local football in Gdansk / Tricity [2]

For sure there are local amateur teams. Not particularly pub teams but there are local leagues.

Someone in the "Brits in Poland" group here: m.facebook.com/groups/britsinpoland/, also on Facebook, might be able to advise about local teams. I think there are a few people from Gdansk/Tri-city in the Brits group.

McTit

Not a name. There's Tittensor and Titmuss.

Both rather nice names.

Unlike the very unfortunate r*SSian with three balls called Eugene Ikabolokoff

He's a good guy; one of the pre-eminent figures in European politics and absolutely spot on about the danger of a certain pariah state. His wife is a very good analyst of the situation too.

fentanyl

So far not a thing however there have been warnings from the police that it's started to appear. Allegedly something to do with China.

Around half of them

I can't see it happening soon in Britain however some parts of the country are more accepting than others. The police in London don't bother much, even with street dealers however in Scotland they're strict.

Where I'm from, they don't prosecute for under 10 plants and the quality tends to be good.

russian

What has this thread fit to do with a state to the east?

Szreńsk

A tiny place and Sikor which barely exists is certainly named after the bird.

unless they slip you a mickey.

Most people who buy such things tend to buy from people they know. That or mail order.

before they were legalized

Are they legal in every state?

How were Brits in 1981 to know that Sikorski is a pretty common name,

Especially 19 year-old Old Etonians at Oxford who were far less likely to have known Poles than people from an industrial place.

They'd all have learnt military history though.

Food / Polish dishes with foreign origin in the name [99]

I like ready-made ones

They're OK though I tend to buy more traditional krokiety from there.

I've tended to avoid Saigonki after that scandal just south of Warsaw where a wholesaler got in trouble for sourcing their raw materials from an animal sanctuary.

Lots of places have urban legends about things like this (every single small town in Britain has a Chinese takeaway which was allegedly found with half an Alsatian and a human hand in the freezer) however this was confirmed, reported on the TV news and resulted in a prosecution. It was the animal sanctuary who first alerted Sanepid.

It's a very sophisticated market and the quality is good.

I wouldnt trust them at all

Thousands do.

Not really

He strongly implied that he was an immediate family member a very famous person with the same surname. It certainly opened doors for him.

The US was soooo lucky

Yes. Giants of their day.

We are however drifting away from the topic.

Language / Polish language test, NATO Stanag 6001 format. [8]

A pleasure. The various inspections and visits (that don't actually mean much however at least it's a jolly to nice hotels and a banquet) are run by one country at a time, for I think a 5 or 10 year period. When I was involved, it was about to switch from Canada to Bulgaria who probably still have it unless it's recently changed.

The levels are based on century old metrics used for assessing immigrants' English. It could do with a shaking up, perhaps adopting something closer to the CEFR scale however military things move slowly and language levels (pretty well exclusively used as part of the decisions on who can do what training courses abroad) are a long way from being a high priority.

So what is the answer?

Can you guess?

was a person born in Guangzhou?

Why not, if their loyalties weren't in doubt? After all, Henry Kissinger was born in Germany and Madeleine Albright was born in Czechoslovakia.

The criteria are downloadable from multiple sources. They do not vary language by language.

They're based on a slightly odd and very old fashioned form of assessment criteria that was or is used only in America.

Anne Applebaum

One of the best writers on r*SSia of our time.

How does a guy from Bydgoszcz, join a club whose members are almost all British aristocracy?

I posed that question (and the answer is no secret at all - it's even slightly amusing) already. It's been mentioned in articles about him.

The guy only denounced his citizenship in 2006

Renounced, and it's hardly rare to have more than one passport. A shame he renounced it though, however politicians' opponents often bring such things up in order to try and question someone's loyalty, even though Radek Sikorski's loyalty is not in doubt.

a solid imitation of an educated Britisher.

I'd not go that far however we do produce the overwhelming majority of English language training materials and RP is still the prestige register of the language.

There are definite parallels. Some differences too since most of them went to the same three or four schools and are probably distantly (or not so distantly) related anyway. Perhaps skull and bones works like that too.

As far as I know it's been going for a long time. Evelyn Waugh mentioned them indirectly in Brideshead Revisited puking up through Charles Ryder's window.

Upper class young men at Oxford who wear white tie and tails and smash up restaurants shouting "buller buller buller" while they do it. They pay for the damage afterwards. Invitation only, no more than about 20 at a time. Not well thought of.

Boris Johnson and David Cameron were both members, at least one if not both of them at the same time as him.

Can you guess what lie he told in order to be invited?

true but I think sudden separation from your family, illness and hospital ordeal are not the best moments to change that

Indeed. I'd hope they're getting better about things like that now.

but I managed to get it off the nurses.

Some (but not all) of the nurses were the worst when I was in. The doctors (I don't have any bad memories of them anyway) seemed OK.

It's never easy for kids in hospital and they should really try to make it less bad. Maybe I'm an optimist however I suspect things only get better.

So, they legalized marijuana

No, but they have vape cartridges with eeed extract in.

Can you buy these vape carts, concentrates and ounces of flower?

Very easily, but not legally.

NATO-led STANAG 6001 foreign language proficiency tests.

A thread from a long time ago however it just popped up at the bottom of the screen.

There are no standard tests or exams. STANAG 6001 is a set of criteria; each individual organisation (some countries have only one, some have many) that use it as an assessment tool has its own assessment methods to measure people against it.

in hospital in the early 90 as a kid. The staff was great

I suspect things had really picked up by then. I was in for several spells as a kid in the early/mid 70s and most of the staff (with a couple of exceptions) were total cvnts. Like something from a Victorian workhouse.

An abiding memory of the kids' ward was that there were high shelves around the walls with all sorts of fancy toys provided by local charities, rotary clubs etc and they were just for decoration, kept out of the kids' reach.

sounds like someone who's used the language for decades to do things (which require high levels of language proficiency

Worth mentioning that he went to Oxford.

a star student in a language class

That's my feeling too. Traszkowski does sound a bit languageschoolish. As if he paid attention in an FCE class and did well in the bit of the exam where they have to describe pictures.

I prefer Rafał Trzaskowski who is more fluent.

I'd say he's more precise and less fluent as a whole.

Sikorsky certainly has higher fluency and a much greater range.
