Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [685]

European hamster.

I don't actually remember you mentioning them before but I wouldn't have got it anyway. I tend to think of hamsters as pets :)

Why did I remove soil from around that trunk???

Are you going to put protective fencing around the trunk and want to fence it below ground level to stop rodents burrowing beneath it?

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation - part 2 [629]

don`t allow your kasha to be blown into.

Don't allow anyone to tell you what to do, to push you around. Not taking sh!t from anyone.

You two got matched like in a bushel of poppy seeds.

A well matched pair. Two peas in a pod?

onto the other leggie

Is it similar/same as the idiom in post #62?

Off-Topic / Let's talk about shoes [333]

Why is it sometimes a good idea to keep your shoes in the room safe in a hotel?

The only logical thing I can think of is so that you don't forget your passport/tickets/money etc when checking oiut.

I have never heard it.

Call yourself a Pole!!

When you eat a meal and you lie down to rest, that's your pół godzinki dla słoninki, so that the fat has a chance to build up. :)

Perfect explanation!

I am so old but there are still new things to learn...

It makes a change for me to be educating you ;)

Barbara Wrońska feat. Michał Szpak - Zanim

I'll end with this one tonight.

I enjoyed that one. Strange to hear Polish funk!

I like the fact that her painting is taller than her ;D

I can't imagine painting anything taller than me! Well, in my case it would be drawing. I think something of that scale would take me an age to complete.

I personally can't have colourful art on my walls

I get what you mean. I like light and plain walls because we had garish patterned wallpaper and carpets which I couldn't stand when I was growing up. I felt like everything clashed badly in our house and I found it quite depressing. I do have many paintings on the wall in my home now though and a lot of mirrors.

I'm clueless about art :)

I'm not far behind you Lenka. Other than what I learned in art classes at school and from reading books on art, I know little about any techniques. I just know what I like when I see it.

I am one of those people that likes to see real talent when I look at a painting. Abstract art leaves me cold. If it looks like a 5 year old child could have painted it, I'm not interested.

Lots of shiny Arab tat in our home

Moroccan in mine :)

Ikea

I'm constantly amazed by the number of people that love Ikea!! One opened not far from me about 20 years ago. I went when it first opened, saw nothing I liked and haven't been back since.

Guess I must be the odd one out.

Polonia / Which country is better SPAIN or POLAND [118]

It's a nice city, lovely gardens, historic buildings and great restaurants.

It is. I was quite surprised at just how nice Malaga is. Now I understand why so many pensioners retire there.

Malaga's lovely but so hoooot,

I've only been in the winter but I did make the mistake of going to Seville and Cordoba in August a few years ago. 43C......was a tad warm.

I do like Spain and I've visited many regions of it but I still prefer Poland. The only way I can explain it is that I feel at home when I'm there.

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (

Beautiful paintings. I have one of his on my wall at home.

Now they cost tens of millions

Guess his paintings have become more popular over the years.

I forgot to post the artist herself :)

She's younger than I thought she'd be. She definitely has a leaning toward fantasy.....

I also like Klimt, but the lesser known paintings. My favourite of his is Mada Primavesi.

Annie Stegg's art

Now I do like those :)

The second picture in post 29 appears to me to be in the style of John William Waterhouse. Also reminds me a bit of the style of painting in Midsummer Eve by Edward Robert Hughes although the subject matter differs. The ones in the post below are delving into fantasy and you know I like fantasy art. Thanks for posting them :)

The painting below is a favourite of mine:

I'd like this to be a general thread about art (

I'm really going to like this thread :) Great idea Paulina :)

Gabriela Elgaafary

She's incredibly talented and her paintings are amazing but it's not really my kind of art. Wish I could paint that well though!

It's easier for me to say what I don't like.

For me too. I'm not a fan of Cubism, Abstract art, Contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin etc the list is long......

I actually like a lot of Pre-Raphaelite and Renaissance art although I feel I'm in the minority. Doesn't seem to be very popular.

News / Flood in Lower Silesia in Poland - looks catastrophic [94]

it looks like the flood that will hit Wrocław this time will be similar :

Until I read this thread I didn't know anything about the 1997 floods so I started doing a bit of reading.

For anyone interested here is an article giving a day to day account of the flood in Wrocław.

I wonder if it is caused by cultural disparities between our two nations. Do you know of any red counts in British history???

I think it's more that you know the answers and I don't ;)

Do you know of any red counts in British history?

Not offhand but I'll have a think about it.

News / European News and Poland Thread - part 4 [437]

I feel better off now than I have ever been!

I'm presuming that you don't have to worry too much about finances then.

I sold my business but also because I have two good pensions and no mortgage or debts to pay.

I rest my case. Not everyone is in your position.

I certainly don't feel better off and amongst my social circle nobody else does either.

I live here and I would say the majority of Brits are happy to be out of the EU.

So do I and I am not happy to be out of the EU.

Please tell me how badly the UK economy is doing since Brexit
