News / Will PiS be happy if AfD wins elections in Germany? [1312]

left

The Social Democrats are centrist rather than left.

But much better under the Thatcher years..... your point?

It didn't. I remember the length of the dole queues, former steelworkers begging for money, police (and soldiers dressed as police) attacking lawfully picketing miners and in the north east, we're seeing the third generation of dolites.

Plus, in 1979 when the b1tch took office, 40% of people owned some shares and we all owned the water, gas, electric, trains, buses, BP and a few other things. Now 12% of people have shares and the rest have nothing.

Life / Giving tips in Poland [235]

"It is not right for employers to withhold tips from their hard-working employees.

It's also rare (as is tiupping other than rounding up by 10% or so, however as a new phenomenon (anti-worker) that capitalists are exploiting, it's good that the government are preventing it.

someone would get shot dead.

Gun proliferation is obviously bad, however surely it's better for workers to receive a good wage rather than depend on goodwill.

I don't see any change coming to the various tipping cultures of Europe.

UK, Ireland / Better being female in UK or Poland? [33]

better to be a woman in Poland.

If you like receiving flowers, haven't been raped and don't mind drivers shouting "ruro" out of their window.

Law / Gun control in Poland: should Polish people be allowed to own guns? [1070]

until there is a real vote.

Why would we need or want a referendum on a non-issue.

Gun crime is low and we like it thsi way.

guns are not necessary

There's no reason for any civillian except for a small subset of farmers to have access to them.

We don't want things like this: metro.co.uk/2024/04/22/mcdonalds-customer-sauce-shooting-florida-20697665/?ico=mosaic_tag

Language / Should I learn Polish or she learn English? [83]

at least, practice speaking the other's mother tongue

We both understand each other's to a degree however it's worth remembering that when there are five countries, five languages involved in your life then you have to be practical, consistent and also to a degree economical. When communicating in languages that aren't your first is an everyday thing for you and sometimes challengingly annoying then you'd better to pick one and it's the one where both parties are fluent.

Language / Cult statements in the Polish language [31]

It's ChWDP

Chcę Wstąpić Do Policji ;)

Hehe.

I've seen that often enough but far more often HWDP especially 20-30 years ago in Warsaw. It was written everywhere; you couldn't avoid it. It was something that stood out when I arrived.

cryptic crosswords and other brain teaser type

Me too. Especially Codewords. I'm just getting into cryptic crosswords now.

Juggling is beyond me in terms of coordination.

I can wiggle my ears though.

News / Will Poland as a NATO member be drawn into the Israel/Iran war ? [250]

Crno, with his naivety and swallowing all sorts of nonsense, is a likeable fellow all in all.

He actively goes out of his way to post really nasty sh1t, pictures of dead soldiers, racist stuff, homophonic stuff, sexist stuff, anti-Polish stuff. Like a race to the bottom

Law / Gun control in Poland: should Polish people be allowed to own guns? [1070]

No, actually you don't.

I do. Perhaps compare your town with the suburb I live in. Or your state capital with Poland's capital.

We have far less crime.

I'd say Warsaw compares _very_ favorably with any comparably sized American city

And it compares well with most European capitals too.

If Jim thinks America is crime free compared to Poland, perhaps he should look at gun crime rates.

It's bizarre to suggest Poland should worsen its firearms laws when they work well.

that absolutely have to be managed by hunters

So do our deer. So does wildlife in Poland. Yet we manage this without weak gun controls.

They will likely change though if the war, or threat of war

Why?

And in the highly unlikely situation that safety laws are weakened, there will be strict controls, for example not giving them to people with a history of felony, people who've taken Prozac etc for depression and people who haven't been screened by a psychiatrist or psychologist.

defend your home and family

From tanks?

You are paranoid and weak.

Law / Gun control in Poland: should Polish people be allowed to own guns? [1070]

Not for much longer though

Put your crystal ball down.

Opinion has been consistent here for a long time.

The Polish government will order every homeowner to own a gun for everyone in the family over 18.

Sources?

And will they also explain what happens to franc-tireurs in wartime?

You will never reach your end goal

One reason for making small interim goals and having a way of measuring if you've achieved them. Sometimes goals should be baby steps; setting them too high (or too vague) makes them harder to achieve.

English at home, Polish with some of the extended family, English with others.

Only Polish for us since we don't speak each other's first language, and after all, we're in Poland. It works for us. Among friends only Polish except for one person with whom I mix Polish and English because she's learnt English well but doesn't have an opportunity to speak it.

Another mistaken "home invasion"

You beat me to it. I read that late last night and thought of posting it here but had other thing s to do.

It's amazing that things like that can happen in a supposedly developed country. Doubtless some of the trolls here will say that they think she should have had a gun too. Perhaps they like shootouts with bullets flying everywhere.

The kind of thing that would never happen in Poland

Yes. The gun laws here work and of course there is no significant public opinion in favour of weakening them.

Off-Topic / Pop A Cork - Wine [397]

A wine stone does not mean that the wine is bad, quite the opposite.

For some wines, like a nice crisp Muscadet, it's desirable.

'lees'.

Muscadet sur lie ;-)

News / Will PiS be happy if AfD wins elections in Germany? [1312]

we will have a Socialist government here.....much worse.....

Or much better.

Labour is Democratic Socialism with a hefty element of Social Democracy. It shouldn't be compared to any other political party abroad. Remember that Socialism, Trade Unions, free compulsory education, old age pensions and the National Health Service were all invented by us. They're as British as Yorkshire tea and crumpets.

The country did well during the Blair years and in issues of foreign policy there will be little or no change from the status quo.

Digital art doesn't do much for me as I'm not a great lover of computers in general

Same, however some of the stuff that David Hockney has been doing in an iPad is pretty good.

how to use an overhead projector to project a drawing onto a piece of paper

Rembrandt did much the same. Earlier artists too.

everything from WWI to the end of the Cold War as a single conflict

In a thousand years time, they'll be taught together.

socialism

We're moving towards that, and it is a good thing. It does allow for elements of capitalism.
