Life / The Pole, as an example of a perfect Russophobe, in a spherical vacuum [42]

Can a Pole theoretically hate a Russian more than a Ukrainian?

If you're talking about individuals then any individual can hate another.

IME Polish people don't trust the Russian state (no matter what form it takes at any given moment with the Tsar, the CCCP, Banditwarland or Putinostan) and it's hard to argue that close association with Russia has ever been good for Polish people or the Polish state.

But there are individual Russians who live in Poland are are quite okay with it.

The general truth with Russia is, that with very, very, very few exceptions the more and closer connections a country has had with the Russian state.... the wider and deeper anti-Russian political sentiment.

I don't think most Russians really want to think about why that might be...

Life / Noisy neighbour - Law in Poland [10]

will the police inform the noisy neighbours?

If these neighbors are renting then the traditional way of dealing with it is to contact the administration so that they will inform the owners that their tenants are annoying other residents and the owners deal with them (maybe kicking them out).

A couple of times that's happened to bad neighbors in buildings I've lived in (I did nothin' it was the other neighbors)
If they're really a bother that may already be happening.

Language / Your perception of the Polish accent [145]

How many decades?

I knew some British guys in the early-mid 90s who were horrified that teachers in their department were still using some version of RP/Queen's English as a model for their students.

I was told that that accent would make them instant targets of dislike in the UK (they put it a bit more colorfully). After some effort, they managed to get something a bit more realistic put in place.

The basic problem is that there's no neutral version of British English, it's all highly marked for region or social class (and sometimes other stuff).

The US does have a standard that's neutral for class and region and ethnic background (General American English). Some people move between it and something more defined as the occasion demands.

standard pronunciation as important!

Define "standard pronunciation" there is no single phonological system for English. Different standard varieties have different numbers of vowels (to say nothing of distribution of said vowels) and the different sounds of some consonants is also specific to particular standards.

And the entire field of ESL (in Europe at least) gave up on the 'standard pronunciation' or 'native pronunciation' as goals in teaching back in the 1990s....

"In" jest bardziej zbliżony do myśli w środku w czymś "inside"

chodzi ci o oswabadzanie /oswobodzenie i wyswobodzenie?

History / Why Was D-Day So Significant for Poland ? [266]

Eastern brothers in Soviet-controlled Germany were much poorer

Not just materially.... I knew a couple of Poles who, in the 1980s, had a temporary work contract in the DDR (several months) when that was considered a plum assignment since the DDR was materially better off than Poland.

They returned home after about three weeks because they couldn't stand the oppressive, suspicious and fearful atmosphere.

Off-Topic / Ukraine, Belarus, Russia in EU in 2030? [105]

Good. Like killing people that did us no wrong

Why would you ever move to a country responsible for such atrocities?

Why can't you justify Putin's aggressions positively? Putin lovers always look for bad things to compare him with - never anything positive or uplifting....

when Russia organizes a peaceful and well-supervised referendum

In violation of all kinds of international law.... (including soldiers in unidentifiable uniforms) but I guess there was popular support, some places reported more votes than residents.... the sheer beauty of Russian math...

And look how well Crimea has done under Russian rule... the droughts have been relieved by flooding (and nb, Russia usually does not compensate victims of natural disasters). Maybe the floods will wash that bad chemical spill into the sea to wash the land....

I respect Putin more than I do Biden

there's the problem.. you don't have to like either of them (for very different reasons, of course).

Putin is a crook and killer and a dictator

Biden is oatmeal-brained puppet

No call to like either.

Looks like Russia is just itching for war.

The average Putin supporter is low information and belligerent and likes the idea of other countries fearing Russia (see vatnik*)

He has to rattle his sword here and there so they won't think he's going soft. They don't care about the astronomical drug addiction rates or insane levels of violence in the home and on the roads or the fact that the government raided pensions to fund the Crimea takeover, as long as Russia seems scary they're happy.

independence

niepodległość (bardziej polityczny?)

niezależny (bardziej osobowy?)

Language / Harmless old-fashioned Polish swear words/phrases [159]

I am sure that there is an explanation for this insanity.

The same reason that you can't say 'three furnitures' or 'he cans sing well'.... languages have their own logic, but narcissists can't deal with anything foreign - it frightens and frustrates them to not be in control...

Travel / Had the most unwelcoming experience in all my travels in Poland, very unfriendly people. [115]

So i get in the batharound 12:00 get out around 14:00

Does not make any sense. I love baths, I love bathing (more showers but I don't mind a nice leisurely soak either) and have never spent anywhere close to two hours in a bathroom.

I've been to thermal baths in Hungary (a lot more interesting than a Polish bathroom with pools at different temepratures and steamrooms) and am in and out the front door in less than two hours.

just some water on the ground

Again... suspicious how much? Was there a drain? Two hours soaking and you can't dry things before running out to smoke? Does not make sense.

News / PiS politicians` mailboxes hacked. Russian intelligence suspected. [33]

The lede of course is that PiS officials either don't understand or don't care about cyber security and were using unsecured private accounts to discuss state business - a shocking display of incompetence (shades of Hillary Clinton....)

Hołownia suggested it's because of the paranoia found in the party - they don't trust each other and so they wanted as much as possible to be off the record and not on government servers....

Another triumph of incompetence.

News / The Political Circus of Poland [309]

The only negative thing I can say is about his appearance

That's like the old saying: Politics is show-business for ugly people....

But congratulations to him! Great result!

Now.... how will PiS/Ziobro try to overturn it? Does anyone expect them to simply accept defeat?
